  1. I don't think you can fault Carnival when they are in compliance with the guidelines of all the regulatory agencies who are involved in the cruise lines business.

Why the Titanic comment ?? Waaay out of the scope of the current Carnival situation !!!

What would have been better? Using the Concordia and thinking what nut Captain would sail by sight and not use instruments while sailing amongst rocks and islands?

What questions should we have to ask about our safety before sailing.

    NONE!

We should assume they have worked out all contingencies. And have failed us. Twice in a month.

  2. We as passengers should not have had to worry about reduntant systems and such.

We should have just been fine with putting our faith in those that were taking care of us. We found out since this is not true.

I am still sad thinking about those poor Titanic victims. Why should they have thought there were not enough lifeboats to get everyone off the ship. Some times we leaqrn there was simply too much trust.

As long as those $$ are flowing in.....

  3. Snowmeo,

You hit the nail on the head. Missed port refunds used to be $25 along with a letter explaining that the $25 was a gift and not something we were entitled to. I didn't mind the token $25 'gift,' but the letter was a bit too much.

And the Legend misses one port and everyone is offered 50% off their next cruise. Go figure.

Yesterday everyone was coming out of the woodwork looking for compensation on their missed ports.

  4. Just back from my RCI Independence of the Seas cruise. Pretty good! Some surprises though. Heres a couple quick comparisons

-Food- Carnival was so much better. I would have killed for a Blue Iguana burrito! The dining room service took longer and they had more staff! Anyone who complains here would be surprised with how it compares.

-Entertainment- RCI was so much better! LIVE REGGAE/CARIBBEAN MUSIC on the Lido Deck!!!

-The ship was awesome! and HUGE! RCI Doesn't have slides or a ropes course, but they do have flowriders and rock walls!

-Bow thrusters caused earthquakes in the front half of the ship! I wondered if one was about to come loose!

-No secret decks, but you can walk out on the bow!

I go more into depth on the RCI board.

I'll probably sail both lines again at some time. Its good to see if the grass really is greener across the street once in a while. In this case it was just as green.

I took my first RCCL cruise and was looking for the things that the RCCL loyalists said made RCCL a step up, or a better line.

And came off finding they were just a step aside, not a step up.

And thoroughly enjoying them. Yes, there were some things they had that CCL didn't, and some things they didn't have that CCL did.

And then that most things were right on par with both lines.

So, it was a plus plus for me. It opened up a whole new fleet of ships and a whole bunch of new itineraries to choose from.

  5. oh ya....NOTHIN'!! :p

Just got off the Glory this morning...sitting in a hotel in Fll waiting to fly home tomorrow morning...and am totally absolutely irreparably addicted to cruising!!! :D

What an absolutely fantastic time...great weather, my little windowless interior cabin in the bottom of the ship was just fine, Chris my cabin steward was a sweetheart, the food was omg :o and just about everything we did was a total riot! No complaints from me...

A few technical difficulties with the shows...my bottomless bubbles was a little watered down, and my feet are so swollen i cant fit into my flipflops anymore.....but my table mates who we met the first night were a total hoot...i had my picture taken with the Captain and i saw dolphins jumping out of the middle of the ocean...

    ...oh....and warm chocolate melting cake.....

    need i say more!

Thank you everyone for easing my newbie fears and sharing your insights...I have already emailed my hubby to say pack up the bags we're taking the kids next year! :D

    Nothin' like that first cruise!

  6. By 1995, the Sensation was added to the fleet, doing alternating eastern and western Caribbean itineraries.

Also added was The Imagination was doing western Caribbean itineraries departing Saturdays.

The Tropicale was moved to New Orleans, which also embarked passengers in Tampa, calling on Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

Another new ship, the Fascination, started doing The Southern Caribbean from San Juan.

By this time, the Holiday was on the west coast, doing 3 and 4 day cruises to Catalina Island and Ensenada.

The Ecstacy was now doing 3 day trips to Nassau, and 4 day trips to Key West and Cozumel.

The Carnivale in 1993 became the Fiesta Marina, where Carnival experimented having a Spanish speaking cruiseline offshoot. It didn't last a year after failing miserably. The ship was scrapped in 2008.

The Mardi Gras had already left the fleet, and was scrapped in 2003.

  7. According to the 1989/1990 brochure, the Tropicale left the west coast on January 7, 1990, for a 13 day Panama Canal cruise, and effective 1/20/90, began a Southern Caribbean itinerary.

And the Fantasy was added to the fleet on 1/22/90, also doing a 3 and 4 day Bahamas itinerary.

The Jubilee went to the west coast on a 13 day cruise on March 25, 1990. It was a 2 week Panama Transit as well, and we were considering it, until Daniel Noriega changed our plans. So we did 2 separate cruises instead that year; one on the west coast Jubilee, and one on the NEW Fantasy.

  8. I was able to quickly locate a brochure from 1989.

    Festivale was doing Southern Caribbean.

    Tropicale was doing West Coast

    Holiday was doing Western Caribbean

Jubilee was doing Eastern Caribbean leaving Sundays

Celebration was doing Eastern Caribbean leaving Saturdays.

And the Carnivale and Mardi GRAS were doing three and four day cruises to the Bahamas.

  9. If you want to avoid the gatekeepers who will pounce if they perceive your question to be stupid or comments that are less than accepting by them, go to his blog and use the ASK JOHN tab, and mark it private.

Worse, you then get a bunch of silly private messages from some of the real weird ones that live on that page.

  10. I was reading that almost all cruise ship Captains are Italian, however, the major cruise lines are not Italian companies.

Take Carnival Cruise Lines for instance ... It's an American / British company with an American CEO ... however, none of the Captains or his 1st officers are American.

Seems strange that these cruise lines don't hire Americans ... The US has the largest Navy in the world. Certainly there is alot of talent getting out of the US Navy that have experiance operating large ships like aircraft carriers and such.

Lots of Americans flying large commercial airplanes ... but not commanding cruise ships.

So, anyone know why there are no American cruise ship Captains?

Do they get paid so little by these cruise lines that no American that has experiance commanding aircraft carriers, large cargo ships, etc would ever want the job?

    Confused ....

Maybe because there's only one American flagged cruiseship? And American's don't wear white after Labor Day?

  11. I was looking through some old pix, and came across one the "new" DW took of me on our first stop on the Jubilee, in a silly straw hat and short shorts.

She was our first, way back in 1988, and now timing with our 25th anniversary.

Barely new, she was just a selection we made out of a Carnival brochure.

We were fortunate to have sailed her 2 more times, and almost a third when she did a two weeker through the Panama Canal, but that Noriega guy made me a bit nervous at the time.

We got to see her in the distance just before she became a P&O ship, and I understand she has since moved on to bigger and better things.

It was kinda sad seeing her sail into the sunset.

    Oh yeah. And that picture.

  12. Our second trip to HMC was the most idyllic leg of any of our Caribbean journeys so far - because of our splurge on the cabana rental. We had the pink one.

What I don't understand is why they put these behemoth villas where they did. Seems kind of senseless and crazy to me, to have parked them amongst the existing cabanas. I would think they could have created a "villa section" down beyond the 15th cabana. As is, they look crowded and ridiculous where they are now. I wonder if there's any way at all that these buildings could be moved to a less obtrusive location?

    Just wait for hurricane season.
