  1. Here are a couple shots from last night's beach walk, for National Beach Day:
  2. We have never had more than two bats flying around inside our house at the same time. We have seen numerous bats in our house over the past 10 years; cannot figure out which tiny space they are squeezing through to get in the house. We have seen dozens of bats come out from under the cedar shingles of our neighbor's house and had bat guano on our window air conditioner. I love that bats eat tons of mosquitoes, but do not like them in the house.
  3. No storm, and no explanation as to why they ran aground. The Coast Guard is investigating the cause.
  4. The Lady Debbie ran aground on August 16, just south of our condominium in Westport, WA. It is still waiting for a salvage company to remove it from the beach. All six crew members were able to walk to the shore and nobody was hurt. The commercial catch of cod has been offloaded and all fuel has been removed without any spillage.
  5. When you dock in FLL you can get a HAL transfer to Miami airport. There also were excursions that included transport to both airports after the excursion.
  6. According to the Urban Dictionary, "Ride the wind" means to live without direction or without any specific goals. I prefer to think of literally riding the wind. One night, when I was taking flight lessons, my instructor decided it would be a good time to just cut the engine to see if I was paying attention to potential emergency landing sights. We were just a couple miles away from the Tacoma Narrows Airport, and I determined that I had enough altitude to glide to that runway. I still had instruments to show altitude and speed until she cut off the electrical power and everything in the cabin when dark. I mentioned that the runway lights were giving me a good guide into the landing. She clicked the radio and shut off the runway lights. Now I was riding the wind in the dark with just a minimal amount of illumination from a crescent moon. It was the softest and quietest landing I have ever experienced. I think I would love to try flying a glider but have never followed through on that dream.
  7. Going to a game at Fenway Park was an experience; it got pretty rowdy up above the big green monster.
  8. When we lived in Maine we visited Boston often. I did not enjoy driving in Boston because of all of the one way streets, lack of parking, and tight quarters in the parking garages. Most of the cars we saw had various dents and scratches. That being said, Boston is a great place for self-guided walking tours. The history is rich and there is much to be seen and learned.
  9. Some of them just do not respond to calls or email. No matter how nice they are, that is not acceptable as a business practice. Try calling (800)355-3017 and then ask for a supervisor; they will assign a new PCC that may be better at responding.
  10. We also went to the Nassau Zoo when we stopped in 2017 on the Disney Wonder. It was an add-on part of an historic tour. Loved the peaceful feeling on the grounds and the flamingo show was a highlight. They truly did come out like stars. Also loved the albino peacock. Our pictures are on a different device and not accessible at this time.
  11. King County brings a truck and a crew up to Skykomish every year for a "Recycling Event" and then they provide a long list of things that we cannot bring to the event, without any instructions on where and when we can recycle items from the list. Not really helpful. Even items they do accept are limited in number and often come with an extra charge.
  12. Is it flying in general you dislike, or just commercial flight? I enjoy flying in small planes, but would rather drive a car from coast to coast than fly commercially if I have the time.
  13. The smoke detectors at our condo seem to start while we are gone. The first time, we arrived just as all of the local stores were closing, and we didn't have any replacement batteries. It did its little beep thing all night, even with the battery taken out. I was at the store when it opened at 6AM to solve that problem. The second time the smoke detector went into its beeping stage we found out by email from the maintenance department. It had been going for a couple days and some neighbors were concerned. The head guy went into the condo, tried changing the battery (which was only a few months old) and when that didn't work, he changed out the unit for a new detector.
  14. When my older sister moved to Florida she told us about the humidity. She said that after taking a shower, you dry off, dry off again, dry off again, and then give up and get dressed.
  15. When Grays Harbor Lighthouse began service in 1898, it was about 400 feet from the water's edge. Now it stands approximately 3,000 feet from high tide. We can see the lighthouse from the balcony of our condo in Westport. Here is the view looking east from our balcony. And here is a view from the street. Notice Santa Claus standing near the lens in the lighthouse.
  16. We have friends with seven children. When they are in a large group setting and the father is attempting to get the attention of all of them, he will use the term "offspring" loudly. 'Hey kids', or 'children' doesn't work because it is easy to ignore and assume somebody else is being addressed. They respond to offspring, and once he has their attention, he is able to give direction.
  17. Thanks for the reminder. Many communities celebrate National Night Out as a way for neighbors to know they are not alone in the struggle against crime. Organizations, like Safe Streets in Tacoma or Neighborhood Watch groups throughout the country, take this as an opportunity to build on what they do all year: strive to make communities safe. Just like in gardening, or life in general, the Biblical concept of overcoming evil with good is what drives this special day.
  18. This post seems really off-topic and has no context to the daily conversation. Can you explain to the community why you posted what you did?
  19. We enjoy a view of Mount Beckler from our town, and Beckler Peak has become one of my go-to hikes. It is only a little over 5000 feet, and as of today most of the snow has melted. For me, it is a mountain; for our daughter, it wouldn't count as a mountain climb because there aren't any glaciers on Beckler. Here are a few pictures from my ascent a couple weeks ago. In this final picture, if you look really closely, you can see the town of Skykomish down in the valley.
  20. Thanks for all of the pictures of Nawiliwili. I have never been to Hawaii, but we are taking a cruise out of Vancouver, on the Koningsdam, in October. We have booked an excursion with Wings Over Kauai the day we are in Nawiliwili.
  21. @SusieKIslandGirlThanks for reminding us of the Military/First Responder OBC in last week's Fleet Report and Daily. I filled out the form for my three upcoming cruises and received $100 OBC for each cruise. I also appreciated that you included a link to the page: Military, Healthcare & First Responder Appreciation Offer | Holland America Line
  22. Your flowers and pictures are beautiful. As someone who doesn't enjoy weeding or working in a garden, I do enjoy the beauty of what grows in the Northwest. Here are a few pictures of wildflowers from my walk on the Iron Goat Trail this week:
