  1. Appreciate the wonderful bird visuals from LAexNy, plus JP's excellent/varied building architecture and food porn. Great comments and follow-ups on this fun thread. Keep up the nice sharing. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
  2. It is only mid-week, but, the up, UP, UP!! trends for the cruise stocks continues. On June 1, Royal Caribbean was at $81.35. Now early this morning, RCL was at over $90 a share. That's another one-year, high-water value level. That's also an 11.7% increase over this fairly short period. The other two cruise lines continue upward in a comparable positive pattern. Does the market sense a very positive path forward for the cruise lines? THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio Dubrovnik! Visual samples, tips, details, etc., for this super scenic and historic location. 3. Agree!! It can be done in one day for BOTH! We did in late 2018. Need proof and evidence that it is worth it? See below. We started early that morning from our ship and had a private tour. It also helped that after doing Jordan, we had four sea days sailing down the Red Sea and going to Oman. Plenty of time to rest up from a long day. When there, they had an electric golf cart option as one person in our group had significant back challenges. Nicer ride down than on one of those vehicles compared to the rough-riding carts pulled by a horse/mule. Those drivers go FAST down that rough pathway. They are in a hurry to pick up another group and make more money, quicker. When at Wadi Rum, we saw some of the railroad tracks used to shoot the Lawrence of Arabia movie. Also, we missed just a week earlier in 2018 when the were using this site to shoot newer version of Star Wars. Amazing setting in some many different ways. THANKS! Enjoy! 4. Appreciate, as always, the great postings, pictures and details from the exciting adventures of Chris and you. Just not catching up to your interesting thread. Maybe you mentioned earlier, but how full is this ship's sailing? Yes, things appear rocky there. Looking forward to more of your excellent "food porn". Always tasty and making me hungry. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
  5. Just catching up, Spins, with your sailing and posts. Wow!! 42F and fog horns are not exactly perfect Florida and/or summer weather. Hope the weather improves. AND, sorry on the food challenges. Hopefully they get things fixed/improved. How does the Hotel Director explain this situation? Have fun in the Canada Maritimes. As detailed below, we were there for the first time last summer and enjoyed it much. Great seafood, people and sights there. Looking forward to more pictures, videos, etc. Glad that the Internet is working well. Liked the earlier NYC aircraft carrier details. Many years ago visited that ship in the Big Apple. Fun to walk around it and sense its size and power. THANKS! Enjoy! 7. From MSN News this morning, they had this headline: “12 Foods You Have To Try In Portugal” with these highlights: “Portugal has recently become one of the most popular destinations for summer visitors. Thanks to its gorgeous weather, beautiful beaches, and rich culinary culture, this small country on the Atlantic ocean has drawn more and more tourists every year. Not all visitors travel to the country knowing what type of food to order at local restaurants. Many interested in Portugal have heard of the Francesinha. Featured in an episode of 'Parts Unknown,' this legendary sandwich is known by many as the dish that made Anthony Bourdain declare, 'Good lord, look at that thing! Is there a vegetable in there?'. Invented in the city of Porto in the 1950s, the Francesinha contains a shocking amount of chorizo, steak, and ham. What's more, it is covered with a thick layer of melted cheese, smothered in a savory tomato beer sauce, and served with a runny fried egg on top.” Sound tasty and good? Here is more in this reporting by Hannah Rice: "Arroz de marisco may mean 'seafood rice' in English, but don't confuse it with Spanish paella. Although this hearty Portuguese dish shares certain ingredients with its Spanish competitor, it is completely unique. What's more, the Portuguese '7 Wonders' project even considers it one of the 7 wonders of Portuguese cuisine. While paella originated with hungry farmers on the beaches of Valencia, arroz de marisco comes from a beach in the central Portuguese region of Leiria." 8. We still need airlines to reach our cruise ports and return home. Here is another story that might provide insights as to those potential changes for the future. From the Wall Street Journal this morning, they had this headline: “American Airlines’ Radical Plan to Reinvent Business Travel" with this sub-headline: "Work travel isn’t what it used to be—and that’s left American rethinking its strategy.” If airlines cannot make as much "margin" off of business travelers, then do they jack up prices for the leisure travelers? Here are some of their reporting highlights: “American Airlines is betting against the traditional business of business travel. Gone are the days when bankers and consultants spent Monday through Thursday on the road, dutifully booking trips through clunky company portals. More than three years after the pandemic began, business travelers are taking some meetings at home and mixing work and leisure travel in new ways. Once some of airlines’ most profitable customers, the typical road warrior 'just went away,' said Vasu Raja, American’s chief commercial officer. American is diminishing the role of relationships with some corporate travel agencies and customers. The airline has slashed more than 40% of its 350-person sales team, which mostly handles corporate accounts and travel agencies. The airline is betting it can leverage its vast network—with more flights than any other U.S. airline—and its loyalty program to keep travelers coming. If the pivot works, the moves could save American millions of dollars in travel agent commissions and corporate discounts. Company travel buyers and corporate travel agents said they feel they’re being squeezed out.” Full story at: https://www.wsj.com/articles/business-travel-american-airlines-d482058b?mod=hp_lead_pos7 THANKS! 9. What's next to worry about when flying to do a cruise? Maybe doing a weigh-in before boarding your air flight? Hopefully not, but read below as to what could or might happen in the future. From the Los Angeles Times last week, they had this headline: “Forget the luggage. New Zealand’s national airline is weighing passengers ” with these highlights: "New Zealand’s national airline is asking passengers to step on the scales before they board international flights. Air New Zealand says it wants to weigh 10,000 passengers during a month-long survey so that pilots can better know the weight and balance of their planes before takeoff. But the numbers from the scales won’t be flashing up for all to see. There will be no visible display anywhere, the airline promised, and the weigh-in data will remain anonymous even to airline staff.” There have been past rumbles about charging air passenger more if they are "oversized" with their seating needs. Hopefully, they will not get the idea to charge more (or maybe less?) based on weight?? Here is more from this story: "Currently, the authority’s designated weight for people 13 and older is 190 pounds, which includes carry-on luggage. The authority last changed the average passenger weight in 2004, increasing it from 170 pounds. Health statistics show New Zealanders are becoming heavier on average. The latest national health survey put the adult obesity rate at 34%, up from 31% a year earlier. Childhood obesity rates increased to 13%, up from 10% a year earlier." 10. When doing Athens, you are also most likely to be sampling some of the famed Greek Islands, right? From the London/UK Daily Mail this morning, they had this headline: “Outsmart the crowds in Greece: Swap sunbed wars on Crete, Santorini and Mykonos for quieter holidays on these lesser-known lookalike gems” with these highlights: “The country has plenty of hidden gems to discover - eye-catching lookalike alternatives to the overcrowded big hitters. Scroll down to discover eight of these stunning quieter beach destinations.” Lots and lots of wonderfully colorful pictures are including for this profile. Included in the eight cited are: Paxos, Folegandros, Mani, Naxos, Samos, Skopelos, Meganisi and Paros. Anyone have experiences to share from visiting these cited Greed islands and scenic locations?? They noted: "Paxos is 'unusually verdant and still largely unspoilt', according to Rough Guides, which says it is a 'particular favourite of yachting flotillas'." And: "Often compared to popular Santorini, nearby Folegandros is considered a quieter alternative in the Cyclades island group." 11. Don't worry, highplanesdrifters, take a nap and relax!! You need a "vacation" to catch up and recovery from this amazing adventure. You did GREAT with all of your wonderful visuals, postings, answering questions, etc. Excellent sharing! But, since you asked, I will share a few of my "secrets" and/or ways in which I "cheat" a little to help in the posting process while sailing. First, I do lots of research in advance and have a computer file full of key summary points for each different port. That way it is easy and quick to do a summary for post the live/blog for each port about its history, culture, background, etc. Copy and paste is our friend and helpful in posting much, quickly for text about where we are visiting and why it is important. Second, I started doing these live/blog when we could only post six pictures at a time on Cruise Critic. That fits with my belief in only showing people the "Best of the Best" for the visuals. Folks think you are a better than average photographer if you only show the "good ones"!! Also for composing and editing pictures on a laptop helps much compared to doing those tasks on just an iPhone or iPad. Editing and fine-tuning pictures makes a difference as you sort through several hundred pictures taken during a port visit. Making adjustments for framing, lighting, cutting out visual distractions, etc., takes some time, but fortunately I have been experienced doing those steps, quickly, over many years on my MacBook Pro. Great job!!! Rest up and we look forward to hearing more when handy. THANKS! Enjoy! 14. Here is the "Rest of the Story". Down in the Williamsburg, Virginia, area last weekend for a soccer tournament involving one of our two grandsons. Did we have fun? See below for evidence and picture proof. The UK flags, etc., were from visiting Busch Gardens near the historic Williamsburg area. This entertainment location has a variety of different Europe countries such as Italy, Germany, the UK, etc. Plus, many wild rides!!! I only did one rock 'em, sock 'em, roller-coasting experience. That was the Loch Nest Monster with two up-side-down twists, plus going round-and-round in a dark tunnel. Fun, but a little "intense' for a "seasoned-citizen" like me. Any others having visited historic Williamsburg and/or Busch Gardens? Bring back memories? Our oldest grandson is age 12, but is not taller than my wife and son. He is nearly as tall as me. 19. Great additional comments, details and follow-ups from Randy and Lois. We are heading into the busy summer travel season. Be interested in any other reports for what is happening on cruises and with air flights these days. The good news is that over the Memorial Day weekend, things at airports in the U.S. seemed to perform well. Not sure for Europe and other parts of the world as people seek to get to their cruise and return safely back home. From MSN News and super experienced travel guru Gene Sloan, he had this headline: “Cruising during hurricane season: What to know — and should you go?” with these highlights: “Veteran cruisers know that fall is a great time to snag a deal on a cruise to the Caribbean or the Bahamas. But the deals come with a big caveat: Fall is hurricane season in these regions, and there’s a chance your sailing could be disrupted by a hurricane or tropical storm. Still, even during peak hurricane season weeks, most sailings in the Caribbean and the Bahamas are completed without a hitch.” Anyone planning a Caribbean cruise this summer? Worried on the risks? Here is more background from Sloan's story: "In theory, a hurricane or tropical storm can develop in the Atlantic at any time. Still, the vast majority of such storms — about 97%, according to the National Hurricane Center — occur between June 1 and Nov. 30 of any given year. This is what’s known as hurricane season in the Atlantic, and it typically brings about 14 named tropical storms, half of which become hurricanes." 21. Venice turning green?? Saw items on NBC-TV's Today Show about this question. Is this historic part of Italy become Ireland? From MSN News and USA Today earlier this past week, they had this headline: “What turned Venice's Grand Canal green over the weekend? Authorities identify substance” with these highlights by Camille Fine: “A blob of fluorescent green water that appeared in Venice’s iconic Grand Canal over the weekend has spurred an official investigation. On Sunday morning, water taxis and gondolas waded through a patch of fluorescent green water that appeared to grow slowly near the landmark Rialto Bridge, an act that Venetian authorities suspect could be linked to environmental activist groups. No group has claimed responsibility for the green liquid that appeared in the water. While local police investigate a number of leads, officials are 'conducting analysis to establish the nature of the substance in the water.' Quartz' Ananya Bhattacharya reported that the substance dumped in the waters has been identified as fluorescein, an organic dye commonly used for diagnosing eye problems that poses no risk of pollution.” Full story at: https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/news/what-turned-venices-grand-canal-green-over-the-weekend-authorities-identify-substance/ar-AA1bTv8A THANKS! 22. Earlier there was discussion about Turkey, their government leadership and major elections. From CBS-TV news earlier this past week, they had this headline: “Turkey's President Erdogan wins runoff election, set to remain in power until 2028” with these highlights: “Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won re-election on Sunday, the head of Turkey's Supreme Election Council announced on Sunday, declaring Erdogan the winner of a historic runoff vote that is set to extend his 20-year rule until 2028. YSK Chairman Ahmet Yener said that Erdogan was elected as the new president with 52.14% of the votes. With a third term, Erdogan will have an even stronger hand domestically and internationally, and the election results will have implications far beyond Ankara. Turkey stands at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, and it plays a key role in NATO.” Clearly, it was a closer election in a country with deep divisions. But, hopefully things will stay "stable" in this key nation that is very popular for tourism. 24. From the London/UK Mirror two days ago, they had this headline: “Warning for Brits heading to Venice after tourists charged £37 for coffee and water" with this sub-headline: "UK tourists have been warned about the dangers of being overcharged in Venice after unlucky diners were hit with bills in the hundreds and even thousands of pounds,” Here are some of their reporting highlights by Ryan Merrifield and Benedict Tetzlaff-Deas: “Known around the world for its stunning and romantic scenery, over a million visitors travel to Italy's floating city every year to explore its maze of charming streets and its gondola-laden waterways. But the bucket-list destination has also picked up a reputation for leaving some unlucky diners seriously out of pocket when unscrupulous business owners overcharge them for a simple coffee or a small bite to eat. In an incident at a restaurant, one British tourist claimed he and his elderly parents were conned into running up a massive £463 lunch bill after dining on lobster and oysters at a popular spot in the city.” Is the rule for Venice and other locations, "Buyer Beware"?? 25. From the Wall Street Journal late this afternoon, below are the stock charts for the three major cruise lines. Especially for Royal Caribbean, it was a great three-day period from Wednesday through Friday/today. Agree or not? In fact today, Royal Caribbean hit a new 52-week high. Are the good times final here and for real? Long-term? Clearly, the U.S. government getting a "deal" done this week to raise the debt limit helped the overall stock market mood and attitude. Plus, over the Memorial Day weekend, things were smooth for airline flights here in the United States. Summer is ramping up and travel is back and consumer confidence is holding steady, positive.
