  1. We booked Princess EZ using Air Canada (AC).

DTW>YYZ>YQB on Sept 30th (Friday) and return Oct 10th, 2022.

The AC flight leaves at 10:10am with a 1hr 21min layover in YYZ.

At times the Toronto Airport can be a very busy.

Need to go through Canadian Customs (passport check) & Immigration check.

Will I need to go through a Security check point to access the domestic terminal?

Then on to the AC gate to board the flight to YQB.

Our bags are check all the way to YQB.

Is 1hr 21min enough time to catch the flight to YQB?

    Thanks for any feedback.  John

  3. Update on the Cliff Walk: A stretch of the iconic ocean side Cliff Walk in Newport, Rhode Island has been closed to the public after a 20-foot (6-meter) section has recently collapsed. The walk is a major tourist draw offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Newport’s Gilded Age mansions on the other. The Cliff Walk Commission in Newport announced the collapsed section of the treasured trail will continued to be closed for the rest of the summer.

We have booked a 10-day cruise from NY to Quebec City.  Every day but one has a port scheduled and we are trying to make our way through the excursion choices.  Interested if anyone knows which ports might be easier (or possible) for going out on your own and which would be better suited to a planned excursion. Especially interested in info about Newport, RI since it is a tender port and although we are scheduled to be there until 5 in the afternoon, all the Princess excursions begin at 7:30 in the morning and are pretty much over by noon.  Other ports are Boston, Bar Harbor, St. John, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown, and Quebec City. Thanks!

  6. Bloomberg issued a warning about the rising cost of debt and questioned Carnival's ability to meet its interest payments -- a note that sent the stock falling.

Also, Morgan Stanley on Wednesday issued its own warning about Carnival's debt load.

Unsurprisingly, Carnival stock fell in response.  Morgan Stanley cited weak sales, growing economic risks, and the rising cost of interest on debt as the three biggest risks to Carnival.

The Morgan Stanley further warned that investors can expect Carnival will require more cash to tide it over until conditions improve in the cruise industry.  Increase in bookings for the next 2 quarters would help ease the pain.  MS stated if things don’t improve expect Carnival to raise cash by issuing more stock.  Last quarter, Carnival reported operating losses of over $1.0 billion and negative free cash flow of $1.0 billion. As such, Carnival wasn't generating any of the cash needed to pay its $368 million in interest costs and had to go further into debt.

Macrotends.com reported on Carnival the following --

    Quarter ending February 28, 2022 was $29.887B, a 12.69% increase year-over-year.

Carnival long term debt for 2021 was $28.509B, a 28.83% increase from 2020.

Carnival long term debt for 2020 was $22.13B, a 128.73% increase from 2019.

Carnival long term debt for 2019 was $9.675B, a 22.51% increase from 2018.

  7. Why is this ridiculous?   Princess knows what’s happening relative to covid.  You would hope so!  When you’re off the ship, Princess does not care whether a person has Covid when they get home.

You’re on a vacation in Florida at a Marriott Resort for 5 days.  Two days after you get home you test positive.  How many persons are reporting they are positive?  Marriott does not care it you test positive once your home.

You’re on an Amtrak train vacation (National Park Express) for 10 days from Chicago to Seattle.  Two days after you get home you test positive.  Will you report your test result to Amtrak?   Amtrak does not care if you tested positive.

I agree with susyed – who do you suppose we should report it to?  CDC!

Now that your home and test positive -- may be you should report your test result to local county health agency?   Bottom line -- the travel industry really don’t care once your home.

  8. Freedom of the Seas - 2017

Traveling on 21.6 knots average speed, Freedom of the Seas has an approximate size of 1,112 feet long. The ship’s standard fuel consumption is rumored to be around 28,000 gallons per hour. Doing the math on this gives us 28,000 gallons x $3.007 per gallon diesel cost.

This means that Freedom has an estimated hourly fuel cost of $84,196. Multiply $84,196 by 24 hours, and fuel consumption per day is an astounding $2,020,704.00!

Princess cruise line 5 largest cruise ships:  Multiply 5 times $2,020,704 equals $10,103,520 per day in 2017 dollars.  (In today’s 2022 dollars, fuel cost is even higher).

Also, a good read from “The Points Guy” about Carnival Corp. cleaning up their act after several environmental violations.  He talks about the newest Carnival ship – Mardi Gras which is a diesel/LNG-electric hybrid (meaning that it runs on a combination of the two) is more efficient than a vessel that runs on one or the other because it allows the ship’s engineers to match the amount of energy produced by the engines to the amount of energy needed to run the vessel without worrying that there won’t be enough (which would cause a blackout) or that there’s too much (which would create waste).

  9. Reading your previous posts -- I believe you're on the Regal Princess which leaves from Barcelona on July 2nd for a 21-day cruise.  Information which ships are in port can be found on the following web site:  cruisemapper.com.

Example – Barcelona has 4 ships in port for that day (July 2nd).   The ships are:  Regal Princess, Norwegian Epic, Celebrity Beyond and Costa Firenze with arrival and departure times.

As previously stated, The Port Authority for each port should have the pier information.  Using Google Search should provide more info.  John

We are looking at the 12 Night British Isles Cruise and wonder whether the amount of time in port (usually about 12 hours) allowed you to get a good feel for the area, especially Belfast and Dublin. We're curious what people were able to see and do in each of the ports. (I've read the descriptions of excursions but think personal experience is valuable.) Also, which excursions were the most enjoyable in any of the ports, and was it easy to arrange your own excursion instead of taking the ones offered by the cruise line? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Are you staying in London pre cruise?  If yes, how many days?

  12. @Thrak      Thrak what a mess!  Thanks to your TA for getting everything back to your original stateroom.  Did you receive all your OBCs?  Yes, after many hours of confusion, frustration, etc.

From all the comments I read on other threads – the decks used for quarantine seem to be mid-ship to mid-forward – balcony.  Also, could those quarantined need to be near the Medical Center on deck 4???  What elevator(s) go the Medical Center?   Also, the quarantine decks used seem to vary by ship. It’s really hard to pin down.  Correct me if I’m wrong.  John

Is there a way to see at what capacity our ship will be sailing? We'll be sailing on the Grand to Alaska May 11. Also on the Regal Nov. 6. Thanks.

Your questions can be answered in several ways.

What is the capacity of your ship at sailing? -- well that number does not change.

    Regal capacity is 3650 guests.

    Grand capacity is 2600 guests.

How many guests will actually be booked on the Regal for November 6th ?

How many guests will actually be booked on the Grand for May 11th ?

Some have suggested you could perform a mock booking which can be very time consuming.

Plus, it’s a moving target. Passengers booked on June 1st – that booking number will change by July 1st etc. etc.

Check with passengers on the cruise before yours could be an indicator.

Agree with cruisingrob21 -- typically TAs  do not have access to this info.

Then there’s standby passengers, guarantee booking, etc.  to consider.  John
