  1. When we were there, the shops weren't even open yet as we walked into town. Everything was still very quiet and calm. By the time we finished our first church, got a waffle, and did the next church, it was quite busy everywhere. We walked past several canal tour spots earlier in the day and they weren't as crowded as when we finally got around to it. It was the last thing we did before we went back to the ship. So I would say if you can do it earlier, and you notice the crowds aren't so bad, then do it. :D

Thank you Cindy for your review. We are booked on a transatlantic on the Crown Princess. All these ports are new to me. I am very interested in the Canal Tour. Could you tell me how much these tours are and how long do they last. Thanks again.

  2. Just back from our 7th cruise together and of all the changes, the one we miss the most is the interaction with the wait staff in the main dining room.

We usually travel with a group of 10-12 adults and have always enjoyed the interactions with the wait staff team assigned to us. They would remember your name, greet you when you arrive, place a napkin on your lap, remember your preferences, joke around, etc. They almost always came by the table at the end of the meal to share a magic trick, a story, etc

Now, you hardly get to know them at all. They are so over worked, they don’t have time to develop any kind of a relationship. They don’t place a napkin on your lap, serve the rolls, greet you by name, interact on any level other than take your order and deliver your food.

It’s not the service that is missed (I can place my own napkin), it’s the personal touch. The relationship that developed and the laughs shared. It takes away from the main dining room experience.

We usually have new cruisers with us because we tell everyone how amazing it is and we always have said one of our favorite parts of cruising is the dinner in the main dining room. It’s not the favorite part anymore - it’s just dinner.

Anyone else miss that and wish they would do away with that cutback?

Yes. I do miss the way the dining rooms used to be set up. I loved getting to know our servers and the great service we got. It's certainly not the same as the days of old. I have tried your time dining 3 times now and I hated it every time. The first time we sat at our table for over 45 mins. before we even got our water. Then another 30 mins. to get a server. This was on the Valor shortly after your time dining was started. I later tried again thinking well maybe it was bad because it was new. Wasn't as bad this time but it was still bad. I gave it one more shot and said nope, not for me. I still opt for late dining, but more and more, with the way the dining room is and the slow service, I go to the Lido for diner. I really miss the way it used to be. I like to be seated and waited on but it's just not what it used to be.

  3. I once asked at the pursers desk the main area temperature, long story, and the answer I got was 21 Celsius, no idea what that is in Fahrenheit.

Thank you Moscowlad. I did have to Google it. 69.8 degrees fahrenheit. That is a perfect temperture for me.

  4. This May 10 will be our 6th QM2 crossing' date=' our 3rd at this time of year. Weather on the North Atlantic can change on a dime. I take a waterproof jacket, a down vest, a beret and a sweater so that I can layer as necessary to go outside for a turn on the lovely Promenade. For dinner, it is wise to carry a wrap, just in case, especially if you will be without sleeves.

I hope that you enjoy your crossing.

Thank you Karen for some good information. I've honestly never owned a wrap. May have to go shopping for one. I will be wearing long sleeves though. Thanks again.

  5. I agree with Pepperrn on the QM2's inside temperature. We have done crossings in all the seasons including B2B crossings in December and have always found the temperature inside to be quite comfortable throughout the ship. I'll hazzard a guess that temperature is about 68°F (20°C). However, DW does frequently take a shoulder wrap if we are going to be sitting for a show or lecture in the theaters or in the Queens Room ballroom for when we are not dancing. Outside can be anything, but is frequently quite windy and chilly.

Thank you BobBranst for the reply. Sounds like we will be staying off the outside decks at night. I'm so excited about this cruise.

  6. Welcome to Cunard :) .

I've crossed WB many times on QM2, twice in May.

I've not found the temperature to be too hot or too cold. I often wear (or carry) a sweater (pullover) in the public rooms during the daytime, and at night I am wearing a jacket of course. Ladies might consider wearing/taking a wrap in the evenings for shoulders to give options in case it is too warm or cool depending on personal preference.

Outside the temperature is likely to be cool to cold. You'll need a coat or heavy knitwear. This is the north Atlantic, not a warm-water slow cruise around the islands. As you near the American coast on the last couple of days at sea the temperatures can pick up; you may see people using the two outside pools. However, most passengers will be wrapped up, even on sun-loungers. There is a great "indoor" pool (under glass) on Deck 12 that I use a lot on crossings.

Have a great time! :) There are photos of my May crossings via these two links:

    Bon Voyage! :)

Thank you pepperrn for the reply. It's always good to have an idea of what to expect on a ship. Your pictures are beautiful. I have only looked at the first link but will be checking out the other in a bit. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.

  7. This will be our first time on Cunard but have cruise many time with Carnival. Some ships are very cold and others are warm on formal nights. We will be traveling on a transatlantic from Southampton to NY in May if that makes a difference. Thanks for the replies.

  8. We do not know of anyway to do this in Le Havre (you can book taxis in advance...in Paris). You can certainly find some phone numbers of local taxi companies and try to call them as you are leaving the ship. But not sure this will bear fruit. I noticed (by looking online) that there are at least 2 Radio Taxi companies in Le Havre....but they both get lousy ratings.

Thank you Hank for the reply. Do you know if there are taxi stands somewhere not to far away in LeHavre. We have no trouble walking but I really don't want to spend 45 to 50 mins. walking to the train station on an already tight schedule. Maybe we could walk to the next train station and catch a cab. Any thoughts on this. Thanks. You have been a wealth of information.

  9. Celebrity doesn't offer free perks for inside cabins, cat 9 being one of those. You might get some onboard credit if you book this sailing with a travel agent instead of directly with Celebrity.

Thanks Cruise Raider for the info. Yes, I do have an interior. I didn't know an interior wouldn't qualify for any perks if offered. Now I know. Thanks again.

  10. Celebrity offers wash and fold by the piece but can offer a special by the bag on cruises. On a 7 day, we have seen prices ranging from as low as $20 a bag and to not even being offered. They also have dry cleaning available by the piece for your more delicate items. Ask for room attendant about specials or keep an eye on the dailies. If you get to Elite Status, you get a free bag of laundry during your cruise along with other coupons.

Thank you for the tips on the laundry. I will keep an eye out for specials.

  11. Worthy Perks for a year 1 TA on the New Celebrity Edge ??

Whatever it is, the TA has already been X4 Quadrupled marked Up.

$4249pp Balcony TA Edge 15 Nt. vs. 15 Nt. Balcony TA Celebrity Eclipse $1149pp ??

Thanks for the reply. I too think the Celebrity is over priced but it fits my time frame. I was hoping that maybe as the cruise gets closer that Celebrity would offer a free perk. Never hurts to hope. Thanks again.

  12. The only perks I have seen was when we were on a TA and X offered prepaid gratuities if we booked another TA while on the ship.

No flat rate for laundry for the cruise. On longer cruises they will sometimes offer a “ stuff the bag” wash & fold for $50. It is a standard size paper laundry bag. This is good for jeans, tees, socks, workout clothes. Hot wash so I wouldn’t put things in that could shrink, bleed or are delicate.

    Thank you for the reply.

  13. Hi my fellow cruisers, I have a couple questions about Celebrity. I am doing a transatlantic on the Celebrity Edge, April 2019 from Ft. Lauderdale to Southampton. So I have a few questions for you.

    1. Does Celebrity ever offer any perks for transatlantic cruises?

    2. This is a 15 day cruise. Does Celebrity have a set price for laundry? I mean like a fixed rate for the duration of the cruise. Or do you pay by the bag.

    Thanks for all replies.

    3. Could someone please explain the classes to me. I am in an interior catagory 09? Sorry, just trying to understand some of the post.

  14. Pay no attention to this poster. They seem to only be interested in trolling and anti Carnival. There is nothing wrong with the coves. However, they are very shaded. But they're close to the water and offer an amazing view of the water and the port activities.

I had a cove balcony when the Dream first came out and I was under the galley. NEVER get a cabin under the galley. It sounded like a bowling alley. I have never heard so much banging going on. I have since stayed in other coves with no problem. I have one booked for Nov. Just be sure to be very careful when picking your cabin. Check what is over you and you should be fine.

  15. We did this tour as well and once we were dropped off we did the hop on hop off bus tour around the city. Gave a good overview of the city. Would love to go back again

Could you tell me please where you go to find the hop on hop off bus in Paris? First trip and need all the help I can get. Thanks.

  16. If this is your first port in the EU, there could be some delay in getting the ship cleared. We have never had Le Havre as our first European port....so this is just my guess. As to cabs in Paris, you cannot just flag down a taxi like in the US (or other places). As a general rule you get Paris taxis by going to the closest taxi stand. If there are no taxis you just wait and hope one will come along in a short period of time. Another option is to call for a "radio taxi." One of the best cab companies is called "G7" and I believe they even have an English speaking number.. I am not sure if they now have an app for your phone...which might be helpful.

I am a big fan of Uber and that is often a great option. But Uber has been meeting with a lot of resistance in many European cities so you should check on the status of Uber close to when you take your trip. Personally we never use taxis in Paris (unless we are going somewhere with luggage) but prefer public transit. Paris has a terrific Metro system and also their RER trains. A few years ago we did arrive at the Gare St Lazare with a lot of luggage (we were staying in France for about a month) and exited the station looking for a taxi. There was a long queue of people waiting for taxis and no taxis :(. So we walked a few blocks (dragging all of our luggage) until we found another taxi stand with no queue...and also no taxis. But within 5 minutes a taxi cruised by, saw us waiting at the taxi stand and quickly stopped. This was before Uber.

    Hank

Thank you Hank. Good to know what to expect with the taxi's. LeHavre will be our last stop before heading to Southampton. I have so much to learn. First trip across the pond and I am trying to get it all figured out with the trains, taxis and language barriers I'm hoping for the best. Thanks for all the folks on here, I feel I will know how to manage it all when I get there. Thanks again for any and all info.
