If  your ship docks at Circular Quay it is right next door to the ferry terminal  and the ferry to Taronga Zoo only takes about 15 minutes. Once you get there it is best to take the cable car up to the top of the zoo and walk back down. Taronga is a great zoo with lots of australian native animals as well as many other species and the views back to Sydney are well worth the trip. Circular Quay is also a great area with The Rocks and  the Opera House being right there.

In Perth it is very easy to take a ferry over to Rottnest Island to spend the day. It is a lovely place to wander around and have a swim ad the Quokkas are super cute.

Aussiekillarney, we are planning to do exactly what you have described for a trip to Taronga Zoo from Circular Quay. Thinking we will do that earlier in the day then ferry over to Manly for later afternoon and evening. Is there any particular ferry you would suggest to get to Taronga and then to Manly or do we just grab any ferry to Taronga then a ferry from Taronga to Manly?

  2. We stayed in Meriton Kent Street. Loved the location with spectacular views out over Darling Harbour. Great central location to get to the main attractions by foot, and access bus or train, large shopping mall with grocery store just across the road. The suite was set up perfectly for our stay and we were even given the room early on arrival at reception in the morning after an overnight flight.

  3. 4-5 days not including date of arrival if you are just planning to visit Sydney and neighbouring areas such as Manly and Blue Mountains. If you have more time and are not likely to get to that part of the world again, perhaps consider a couple of weeks in various locations in Australia before your cruise?

Thank you!  So, you just show up and join the guide?  Have never done one of these before but have heard great things!

Yes, you meet at the meeting point at the designated time shown on the website. You usually see lots of brochures for them in Sydney including at the airport and hotels. The guides are often students of hospitality or history or retirees so usually have a lot of passion and add some high tales to the tour. We have done free walking tours in cities around the world. I always tip the guides even though the tour is free.

We have a Blue Mountains tour booked for one of our days in Sydney but the walking tour sounds really good for our second day...who do you recommend booking this through?  Thanks!!

You do not book the Sydney free walking tours in advance as they run daily at set times. There are at least a couple of outfits that put on the free walking tours with similar routes. We have done them with Free Tours  https://www.freetourssydney.com.au/free-walking-tours/index.html  and I'm Free https://www.imfree.com.au/sydney. Very informative, interesting & entertaining.

We are staying at the Sydney Harbour Marriot.  We want to rent a car for the day and go to the Blue Mountains. It doesn't look like there are car rentals within walking distance from hotel, is this correct?

Or should we take a guided tour? Recommendations?

    All recommendations are appreciated!

As suggested in the earlier post, the easiest way is to take the train from central station in the morning and then hop on hop off bus around to the key sites at the Blue Mountains. We did that and had a great experience.

The 2-day Blue Mountains/Sydney option that I saw offered by Sightseeing Tours Australia is called "Essential Sydney Tour Package".  Is this the one to which you are referring?  If so, the Blue Mountains tour looks fine, but the Sydney portion looks really lacking.  The Sydney portion is only 2 hours long and it appears to only include a harbor cruise and going up the Sydney Tower.  That leaves a WHOLE lot of Sydney that you don't see.   You might do a 1-day Blue Mountains tour with the company and then do the "I'm Free Walking Tours" in Sydney.  I have done free walking tours in many cities around the world and they have all been great.  There are two "I'm Free" tours in Sydney -- one is a 2.5 to 3 hour tour of the city sights and the other is a 1.5 hour tour of the old part of Sydney known as "The Rocks".  Both of those tours would be well worth your time.

I can vouch for the free walking tours in Sydney. I think the walking tour is really the way to go to explore old Sydney. We did both of the walking tours and they were informative and fun. Small groups. There are many operators providing harbour tours from Circular Quay or Darling Harbour. Not something you need to book a guide for or through a guide as the harbour tour boats have their own on board guide/narration.

I have just looked at the website from the link you provided. It is certainly not live yet. I would do as Boop Tennis suggested above and register for notifications. This link is the registration form -

    Thank you!

I must have been blind to have missed that.

It wasn't actually easy to find on the Zoo website. It took a bit of hunting and clicking back and forth. Easier to find on Viator.

I cannot seem to find a link to purchase that. Can you help?

They may not specifically call it the " Behind the Scenes Tour'. I found this on Viator https://www.viator.com/tours/Sydney/Sydney-Taronga-Zoos-Australian-Animals-Tour-and-Sky-Safari/d357-2055VIP  which describes the 1.5 hour tour as in depth with a guide behind the scenes and includes all day pass and sky safari cable car ticket etc. Or on the Taronga website there are a few special tours/options available. https://taronga.org.au/sydney-zoo/whats-on#specialexperiences  including this VIP Aussie Gold https://taronga.org.au/sydney-zoo/tours/vip-aussie-gold that looks to be similar in description and cost to the one on Viator.

We are making our first trip to Australia at the end of October.  We will be in Pt. Douglas for a few days, then to Cairns for a couple more days, then back to Sydney for a few more days.  We would really like to snorkel and see the Dain Forest.  Any recommendations on tours?  Also anything else that we really should not miss while in the area?  Any recommendations for transport from Cairns to Pt. Douglas and back?  Interested in both "don't miss" and "stay away from" suggestions.  Thanks

You also asked about transportation. Why not consider a rental car from the airport at Cairns for the straight forward short drive to Port Douglas (1 hour North). You could also drive to Daintree as a day trip from PD, taking in the Mossman Gorge, Dianttree River and Cape Tribulation National Park. A lovely drive and easy to do on your own. Another great location between Cairns (couple kms north of Cairns) and PD is Kuranda (can't fit in the same day as doing Daintree).

Lucky you! For a point of reference, I am an experienced snorkeler having snorkeled in many locations around the world so I don't use my following exclamations lightly. 🙂 On a previous Australia land trip a few years ago, one of our locations was Port Douglas in early October. It was a great time to be there with perfect weather. And the snorkeling...WOW! I did a couple of outer reef snorkeling excursions. The one with Wavelength to the Opal Reef (one of the National Geographic photography sites) was absolutely incredible. The day trip I did with Wavelength went to Rayban, Blue Lagoon & SNO in the Opal reef area. Fabulous vibrant prolific colourful well established corals and sea life galore! Can you tell, I was over the top with this snorkeling experience?! A well run outfit. I also did a snorkel excursion from Port Douglas to Agincourt Reef with Quicksilver. This one went to a large platform out on the reef and has sub, glass bottom viewing area as well as snorkeling. I specifically chose that one for my husband who does not snorkel so that he could see some of the underwater experience on the reef while staying dry. The reef was still very good and I had great snorkeling but not as amazing as Opal Reef.

As suggested, Opal card is the way to go. If time permits, our favorite ferry ride is to Manley Beach for lunch.

I second the recommendation to take the ferry over to Manly, stop for lunch or time at the beach then back by ferry again. Lovely views of the Harbour and Manly is great too. We have done that each time we visit Sydney.

We're staying for five nights at the end of Jan so decided to switch from a hotel to a studio apartment.

Has anyone stayed at Meriton on Pitt St lately? The reviews are a few months old. There is ongoing construction next door (also stated on their web site), so wondering if we should book Meriton on Kent St instead... how much will the construction affect the stay?  I wrote to the hotel, no reply yet...

Based on reviews, Pitt St property has an edge over Kent St in that it's smaller a couple of blocks closer to the train station. That may be why Kent is a bit less expensive.

We stayed at Meriton Kent Street a few years back. Loved the location and the apartment. Fantastic views out over Darling Harbour, easy location for walking to various sites or accessing transportation or central station.

For an international flight you should be at the airport no less than 2.5 hrs before departure. That would mean 8.45 or so in your case . If you can get off the ship by 7/7.30 you should be able to make it.

A bit risky during the week, because of commuters on the trains or on the road.

Less worrisome on Saturday or Sunday

Note that there are NO  luggage racks on Sydney trains. You need to keep everyhing with you!

Also,  check in on line the day before, if you can!

Actually, the check in process is usually pretty easy. The hold ups happen at security checks. Passport control is quite fast again.

    Thanks buchhalm!
