  1. We were in a 2D cabin on deck 6 on Silhouette. There was a bit of a lifeboat view... but really did not impact the ocean view.. Kinda liked being able to see inside the life boat, I wondered how that was set up. But I still had almost a 180 degree view... Being a bit anal... I took the deck plan for Edge..on deck 11 and drew some sight lines to the bridge. It looks like few of the cabins on the starboard side aft the MC jut out section... will be able to see the flying bridge. I like being able to see that when docking. So this side will be fun to watch the MC go up and down... but if you want quiet and like to listen to the sound of the ocean and watch the ships crew when docking the port side would be preferable.

  2. Vtcruising, glad to know that I am not the only one ruminating over the MC. I personally can't justify the expense of a suite, but these suites might be interesting to the few people in the world like me, who's idea of an ideal waterfront view would be looking at a harbor. I love seeing stuff working. I do wonder if the MC suites will really impact the forward and aft views of more than just those two cabins either side. That whole section must stick out 8-10'. Also the shade cast by the MC could be annoying for those who like to catch some sun. And the noise... not just from the mechanics but the wind rattling the railing, covering etc and the people partying up top and dining. That could be annoying for more than just the suite passengers. It might be like having a boardwalk balcony on Oasis class.... fun for some, not so fun for others. I wonder what it will be like having dinner on deck 5 with a strong apparent while the ship is heading to its next port? Or will they only use the MC for dinner when the ship is essentially still... say going from St Maarten to St Kitts. I am sure that the nautical engineers have run simulations... but just wonder how well this will work in real life. Looking forward to seeing my self.

  3. The glass panels would disrupt the air and there could be buffetting even at 20 knots, not severe but it could be annoying of one is trying to eat a pile of chips or a frothy drink. Again not a major issue. And yes I am a retired aerospace engineer.

Okay I wondered, if you had an aerospace back ground. You know this MC seems unprotected. I can't think of a bar or restaurant on the top deck of a ship... up near the bow... usually protected at the back or at least mid ship behind some structure. Seems that if in use while the ship is moving that it could be uncomfortable. Now perhaps the front section... will be solid glass, up to the top... if so, then it would really impact airflow... if not... that pile of chips will be difficult indeed... just sit down wind and open your mouth:)

  4. No not at all, the floor is relatively flat so it would cut the air like a knife. Still looking forward to trying out the carpet.

Good to know. But would the edge of the MC along with the solid glass/plastic railing impact airflow? and be less of a knife and more of a block of airflow? Just wondering.

  5. I hope the canopy is reinforced or removable. The wing shape will act like an airplane wing when the ship is directly heading into the wind. Cruising 20 knots into a 30 knot headwind can cause a lift of a few tons! The canopy is 2000 sq ft that is deeper than a 747 wing. I'm not implying the carpet will actually fly but the soft canopy could have issues.

Wouldn’t you have the same issue with the floor of the MC? Seems that whole side piece would impact the way the ship handles while sailing

  6. Yes it actually did hold up well in those circumstances. Just sensationalized media reports! On Edge I don't think they will let anybody out in strong winds where those blades would be like weapons! LOL. Anyway I think Edge shares some features with Anthem. We sailed on Anthem and I would highly recommend others to give her a try. A beautiful and fun ship. Great for those of us in the northeast US.

When I saw the photo of the trees.... those leaves/blades looked like some ancient weapon they would make on "Forged in Fire". Not sure you are familiar with the show (a favorite of my husband... I just happen to be in the room), but as one of the judges would say "This blade will kill" :D:D

  7. For what it is worth - I think this is a very interesting topic. The more we know, the better I say! Before I’ve started reading CC I did not even think that there are so many pricing options, TAs, yo-yo prices, how far in advance etc,etc etc. What’s the harm in telling? The majority of folks here are only screen names, not real people. Why such secrecy about prices , tastes, gratuities - it’s only an incognito’s view, no more :)

I have heard many people say that to get the best pricing you need to book a year or more in advance. I have started to try to track a few cruises to get an idea if this is true. I looked at my last dozen cruises and noticed that on average I book 4 months in advance... and have gotten fairly good pricing (eg 12 night S Caribbean balcony $2000 all in okay it was obstructed view)... Now we are somewhat flexible on travel... so we can do a last minute booking. So far I have been pleased at what I have been able to get.... but recently I noticed a shift. Now this may be due to the itineraries or time of year... but I have noticed prices on Royal in particular going up... and the Edge going up as well. Now I am actually finding better deals on Celebrity (other than Edge) than Royal. Now I have a few theories. 1) the Oasis class ship has really gained a strong following 2) Discouraging non refundable bookings has gotten rid of most of the Looky Lous (those who book just in case they want to cruise knowing they can get their money back), 3) the economy is getting better. So I am not sure my last minute booking strategy (well 4 months in advance) will be effective in the future. Will just have to wait and see.

  8. There’s always that one that thinks the worse in people. Sorry if I torqued anyone off, that was not my intention.

Don't worry about it.... if someone doesn't want to participate... they just shouldn't participate.

The only way I know if I got a good price is to compare. Nice to hear what others have paid... but usually I just have to track prices over time myself. I am retired and used to do quite a bit of analysis for work...so now I study pricing.... or at least I do on ships and itineraries I am interested in.

  9. I am not familiar with Aqua class. We are fairly new to Celebrity... but we have done three in the past 6 months with two more coming up this year. I have been pricing regular veranda cabins and have noticed prices going up noticeably. We booked a cruise on Edge (on april 29 '18) in Dec for $1999/person exc tax for E3 cabin. Today this same class cabin is $2479/person (w/one perk)... same class cabin next Dec is priced at $2454/person (w/ one perk). It will be interesting to see how pricing goes once people have some experience with the ship. I burn like hell and can't sit out in the sun.... so I love the concept of the infinity veranda... but I wonder how people like my husband, who love to sit out in the breeze and sun for hours are going to like sitting by a giant open window. So it will be interesting to see if the ship lives up to expectations. I also suspect the cabins near the MC... will find the view blocked more than they might have expected... the photos suggest the support structure and the jutting out of the suits by the MC will really impact view. Anyway I am fascinated by the ships design and can't wait. We love Celebrity... we have had 2D cabins before and the obstruction was really nothing... I don't really mind seeing a lifeboat...

  10. By the way- Anthem did not sail through a hurricane. It was just a nor'easter! But the wave action, not the winds, caused most of the damage. I think Edge, as the case with all modern cruise ships, has been engineered to be safe in storm conditions. Now it may not be comfortable for some passengers- but it will be safe.

Sorry, I should have said “hurricane force winds” , since it was not technically a hurricane. Actually I thought Anthem held up pretty well, although I think their animal statue lost its head or sustained some damage. Not really worried about the ship just speculating what those blade like leaves would be like flying across the deck in comparable 125 mike per hour winds. But unlikely anyone would be on deck anyway. Just wondering not worrying

  11. Talking about holding up in storm winds, the Magic Carpet is back on the ship. ;p

My husband convinced me to book an early sailing of this ship. I kinda wanted to wait to see how well the MC functioned. Between corrosion from salt water and jostling from wave and wind action... I just wonder how well it will work and maintenance required

  12. These are the cabins on deck 6 actually listed as partially obstructed. It does look like they won't obstruct your view out. This picture of an Edge model may give you an idea of the view down (if it is to scale).

Thanks for this. We are actually in 6211, on the port side. I think we are immediately next to cabins which will have cabins sticking out slightly above them. I think there might be that smaller boat outside. The scale model helps

  13. We have a cabin on deck 6 on the port side. I am wondering if the life boats will be considered an obstruction. Looking at some of the latest photos.. it looks like we will be looking over them. I am hoping they are nestled just under deck 6 so there is still a relatively clear view down... but it is hard to really tell from the deck plan. It is hard to really tell from the photos...how this will work. I am hoping it is better than the D2 cabins on S class ships

  14. We'll find out in January.

We prefer AQ class so no choice.

Does one of the suites have both an open balc and Inf or was that changed?? Just curious... suites out of reach for us esp on EDGE.

The Edge info is very confusing... but I believe that the S1 cabins at the very front and aft... with the round openings are what they call "Deluxe Ocean View Stateroom with Veranda". If you look at the image ( https://www.celebritycruises.com/edge/accommodations/verandas/ ) It looks like a typical balcony cabin... but within the ships structure... vs sticking out. It looks like it has sliding glass doors on it. The sunset veranda's also look more like the traditional design. Not sure about suites... only sailed in on suit many years ago... Anyway I have not researched them.

One other comment on the photos just posted. Boy those cabins on either side of the section that sticks out for MC... they really look pretty obstructed. I will really like to hear about how that works out. One thing I have been impressed with in Celebrity S class is that their obstructed cabins are not really obstructed. We stayed in a D2 cabin and had no issues looking over the life boats... so ships you actually have to look around them.

  15. Guessing the bed is by the balcony based on the location of the connecting door.

That was my guess as well. But if it is paired with the only other single cabin... then it would be near the bathroom. Well I will see. I don't really care... but I do this thing when I can not fall asleep.. I kind of imagine that I am in my cabin... on the next cruise... I will just have to think about a past cruise :)

  16. True, maybe there will only be a DJ in there. Hopefully there will be a nice live music lounge onboard (in addition to the house bands playing in the atrium) or we won't be repeat customers as it's a very high priority for my DH. There are still some gray areas to be filled on the deck plans and I'm sure the venue layouts already filled in are not finalized. Will stay tuned.... :D

I wonder if Celebrity is planning on moving away from live music. The reason I bring this up, on our last cruise on Eclipse, this past April, the cruise director and others made comments about how wonderful it is to have live music. I remember at the time thinking that they seem to be lobbying management. It could have been over thinking this... but companies are always looking for ways to increase revenue and reduce expenses. So it would not surprise me that someone is asking... themselves... the benefit of live vs digital/tape/recorded music. I personally prefer live.

  17. VT I think you may be on to something. The Club would be a good place for the Elite Captains Cocktail hour. Like the Sky lounge it is not heavily used during cocktail hour... more of a late evening dance venue. Eden could also be used, but if they serve meals it will be difficult to have this and cocktail hour. My one issue with Celebrity ships is that there are few places to see the water. They tend to keep the curtains closed in those areas which do have a view. I hope that this will not be the case with the Edge.
