  1. Cape Breton is a large island and is part of Nova Scotia. It is very beautiful. The drive known as the Cabot Trail is particularly famous. However with just a day stop in Sydney you do not have time to drive the entire Cabot Trail or to see the most scenic part (in my view) which is on the west coast.

Here is a document we are working on which gives you more information about options for cruise visitors to Sydney: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SHnC1bdaKtBLTr9bcJShb3a0escYZQKLWkZF4seT14I/edit

  2. I agree with others that you should go on an expedition trip to Antarctica, meaning a ship which has landings. We went on G Adventures Expedition and it was absolutely fantastic. The ship is comfortable but not elegant like the Azamara ships. The food was comparable though (amazingly!) and the staff who gave the lectures and led the expeditions on land and the zodiac and kayak cruises were outstanding.

  3. We spent four days in Siem Reap and barely scratched the surface. It is easy to make your own arrangements to go there. There are wonderful places to stay (We loved the boutique hotel Rose Apple) and great restaurants. We had our own tuk tuk driver for four days.

  4. We had a guarantee verandah our first time and got 783 - absolutely perfect. I would not worry much about being forward. Deck 6 is great for getting quickly to 4 and 5. We used the stairs most of the time, even to go up to 9. Have to work off the fabulous food somehow.

  5. That's not quite true when there are multiple ships the same day. Halifax has room for three. I am not sure about Charlottetown and Sydney. I know they are both expanding their ports.

Here are links to information about Halifax and Sydney:

  6. In NS it varies by county but most garbage is put in clear plastic bags (so you can't hide stuff that should be recycled) and then people put the bags in the large boxes to protect them from predators (crows, racoons, etc.) Organics are put in large rolling green bins. Where I live recyclables go in clear bags as well. One week the pick up is for garbage and organics and the next week is for recyclables.

  7. Google maps suggests you go inland (west first) but I prefer going by Upper Tantallon. There are some shops there and you are by the water. The inland route may be a tiny bit faster so you go that way and return the other.

Notice the routings out of Halifax to avoid some construction. These route are avoiding the Armdale Rotary and the beginning of the St. Margaret's Bay Road.

  8. Here is another map but it does not show every place: https://goo.gl/maps/FrypmVDmGb82

Right on the waterfront walking area from memory are the Waterfront Warehouse (tourist trap), Murphy's on the Water (also a tt but OK for lobster perhaps), Salty's (high end tt). Check reviews by googling Trip Advisor: (name of restaurant)

Here is the map of the waterfront: http://my-waterfront.ca/wp/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/halifax-map.pdf You can zoom in on this.

  9. Here is a tale of what can happen if you do not use a safe. This story is from a friend (A) who was travelling with another friend (B.) They were in a hotel and B would not use the safe. So she hid her credit cards. Of course she forgot where. They were checking out and travelling and she ended up having to cancel the cards. She had put them under the TV where the staff eventually found them, but too late.
