Perhaps more important than the ship are the ports and the time in the ports. Some of the companies skimp on both.

There is a little road train service to take you around the construction on the waterfront. You have been given great advice above. This link may give you more: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-g154976-i327-k9826510-Arriving_by_cruise_to_Halifax_please_help-Halifax_Halifax_Region_Nova_Scotia.html

This post has lots of information and someone mentioned Budget coming to the pier. I don't know if it was from the airport so you should contact them. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2391348

Try posting this on Trip Advisor: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowForum-g155022-i619-Prince_Edward_Island.html
There are places on the waterfront but they are likely to be busy if there is a cruise ship in town.

And there's always Antactica (on an expedition ship.) We saw Orcas teaching their young how to hunt seals right from the bow of our ship. We say several other whales, including humbacks from zodiacs and kayaks.

There are other day trips besides the most popular ones. Check out my second post here for some ideas: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-g154976-i327-k10596196-Halifax_Nova_Scotia-Halifax_Halifax_Region_Nova_Scotia.html

I have not eaten there for years but although a bit of a tourist trap it gets good reviews: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Restaurant_Review-g780595-d981568-Reviews-Sou_Wester_Gift_Restaurant-Peggy_s_Cove_Halifax_Region_Nova_Scotia.html
A less expensive and likely less crowded spot with lobster cooked for you is Ryer's Lobster which is on the road to Peggy's Cove so if you are driving yourself or on a private tour you can go there: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Restaurant_Review-g635951-d2252615-Reviews-Ryer_Lobsters-Indian_Harbour_Halifax_Region_Nova_Scotia.html

The best lobster is fresh caught and not sitting in a pound. Here is a chart showing lobster seasons around Nova Scotia. You will see that up to July 20, Sydney would be a good place to get lobster. http://www.tastelobster.ca/images/fishing_regions.pdf
For Halifax, if you are not going to Ryer's on the Peggy's Cove Road then a good place downtown is the Bluenose II restaurant: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Restaurant_Review-g154976-d702172-Reviews-Bluenose_2_Restaurant-Halifax_Halifax_Region_Nova_Scotia.html

Some US banks carry Euros and others can arrange to get them. But you pay a higher price than going to an ATM in Europe. There is no need to go to a bank in Europe to get cash though you should only use ATMs affiliated with banks.

You can take the Circumvesuviana train from the Napoli and Garibaldi train stations in Naples to Herculaneum. If you ask on Trip Advisor (or do a search there) you can get some details.

Herculaneum is well worth visiting and two to three hours would be enough time.

New small road train for Halifax: http://*******/2r9LJHD This may be temporary while construction is ongoing at Queen’s Marque on thewaterfront.

I totally agree with Hlitner. If you have time and really want to see some of Tuscany should should rent a car. You can drive from there to Venice or you could return the car in Florence and take the train to Venice. For Venice I would not bother going if you don't have at least two full days there. For Tuscany I have been three times and still not seen it all, let along had enough time to savour it ambiance.

This wife did not say she watched: she was the official photographer as crazy DH and at least a third of the passengers ran into the water at Deception Bay.

You do not mention which port you are asking about. Boston?
The Tall Ships will be in Halifax from July 29 - august 1 and cruise ships dock downtown withing walking distance. http://www.metronews.ca/news/halifax/2017/04/12/tall-ships-sailing-into-halifax-this-summer.html

I have no regrets doing an Antarctica only cruise. It was what we could afford and like mentioned above we were more interested in the ice and the geology than the animal life. We saw enough penguins and were fortunate to see a couple stray king penguins on an excursion from Ushuaia.
Thrilling for me was getting south of the Antarctic Circle for two days and visiting an abaonded research station that few have visited.

New Glasgow lobster suppers may not have the freshest of lobster.
On the way to Peggy's Cove outside Halifax check out Ryer's Lobster which cooks it for you and gives you want you need to enjoy it on the spot: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Restaurant_Review-g635951-d2252615-Reviews-Ryer_Lobsters-Indian_Harbour_Halifax_Region_Nova_Scotia.html
You should be able to get fresh lobster in Sydney: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Restaurant_Review-g181763-d765153-Reviews-The_Lobster_Pound_And_Moore-North_Sydney_Cape_Breton_Island_Nova_Scotia.html

I know people who embarked on a cruise which left New York and stopped in Halifax next before crossing the Atlantic. That is about the only way to embark there. I think they paid full price.

It would help if we knew what country you live in.
ATMs work great. They often have a 250Euro limit but you can make several withdrawals at a time. Do some research with your banks and credit unions comparing fees. It is best if you can find a card with no fee for international withdrawals.

We were on Expedition and while it may be informal, the food was fantastic with incredible variety every day. Our room was small but well equipped. It was the crew and staff who made the entire time so special. We really got to know the staff who were a very enthusiastic group with an amazing depth of knowledge.

Our best golf courses are not near these ports. There is no way you can get to Inverness for Cabot Links or Cabot Cliffs. You cannot even drive there and back in your short time in port. Check out Bell Bay near Baddeck, or glen Arbour near Halifax.
