  1. Hi, welcome to the cruise critic family. We have done the round trip Hawaii cruise 3 times, just love it. I do know what you mean about motion sickness, our daughter has dealt with it all her life. But, she does cruise. She takes the generic Bonnie it is meclizine, much less expensive, you get it over the counter, it works. Personally, I would recommend a cabin more towards the center of the ship, you feel less movement, even with the stabilizers you might feel movement in the front of the ship. The first couple days of the cruise going across the California current can be a little choppy.

    Have a great cruise.

  2. We went two years ago, we were allowed one carry on size case each, and we each had a small back pack,(medication, camera, tablet, etc) . The carry on went under the bus with us, and our backpack went on the bus with us. The carry on case was small rolling case , not hard side. Our other cases were taken and met us at the ship later after the land tour. Unless it has changed, call princess to be sure. We toured first then cruised. It was a wonderful trip, you will really enjoy it.

  3. Hi, we live out here in LA area, have used Super Shuttle a few times from home to and from airport, our neighbor always uses Prime shuttle. What ever you use be sure it is a set flat fee. If the freeways are bad it can take a long time to get to the airport, you just never know. Enjoy your trip.

  4. I'm a yachtsman and the rocking sensation is normal, particularly after a bumpy sail in a small yacht, but it normally only lasts for a maximum of one day or until you have been to sleep.

Your problem sounds like crystals in your inner ear.

My wife had something similar which was initially put down to vertigo. Then it was diagnosed as crystals having formed in the inner ear which were affecting her balance.

Apparently the formation of the crystals is common but they only cause trouble when they are in a certain location.

She was sent to the local hospital and placed on a flat tiltable table which was then manoeuvred in such a manner as the technican was able to use gravity to move the crystals and 'park' them in a place where they caused no problem.

The fix was instantaneous and the technician could tell when he had fixed it by the track her eye balls followed when he asked to look from one side to the other (I think he could see them follow an arc rather than a straight line as she looked from one side to the other - but, apart from the fact that he knew when he had fixed it, I can't remember for certain exactly what it was he said told him he had fixed it, but I stress the fix was instantaneous

Go and discuss it with you doctor.

Thank You so much for this web site. I had a severe case of this , not from a cruise but just as I woke one morning , could not walk , became very nausiated, ended up in the emergency room. I still get it now and then but know what I am dealing with now. This is a good article that explains it well. It is not a fun thing. Again thank you.

  5. Hello all, my daughter and friend are taking their first Holland America cruise in July and and if they encounter flooding in the cabin, it will probably be their last. We have not cruised with HA before so was not aware of the plumbing issues on Veendam . Is there a deck or area where this is more apt to happen ?? They are booked on main deck. We have cruised on other cruise lines and know this has happened on those as well. She is well traveled, and has cruised quite a bit, but if possible to avoid it, that would be better. Thanks for any information or advice. Thank you to the OP for posting this thread. Have not seen to many posts on the Veendam.

  6. We are just off the Ruby a week ago. You can slide the luggage under the bed or we just set it upright in backside of the closet area. There is lots of storage in the closet for hanging things and a cabinet as well. As for eating options...lots of choices, Horizon Court buffet, the International Cafe in the Piazza area, the pizza , burgers, hot dogs fries etc..., ice cream... all in the Lido the deck pool, area. And the traditional dinning room, the anytime dinning rooms. The additional pay are Crown Grill, Sabatini's

You will enjoy the ship, it is a good crew, friendly and helpful

We were also on Baja deck, nice location. We have been on several Princess ships, just know you need to be early to the theater to get a seat for the shows. We enjoyed our cruise, hope you do also.

  7. HI Lois: Good for you, we have been looking at river cruises for some time now , and the one we are most interested in is the Tulip cruise. Would love to go. Have researched AMA and they get good reviews . I do hope you post a review. I will follow that for sure.

I have heard that Iceland air has some good prices , but have not researched that as yet , and they give you a free layover in Iceland as well . Our daughter when to Iceland and loved it, so may be that is something that you could check. Anyway , happy for you .

  8. Thank You all for the replys to my question , very helpful, DH will probably leave the pocket knife home, he wanted to use it for small things like cutting off the zip tags on the luggage and it is small and has a little screwdriver on it, but it is not worth the bother. We will take a large toe nail cutter to cut the zip ties and get a little eye glass repair kit for the screwdriver.

DH just thought that since we were not flying to port this time , he might bring it , but rules are rules and they are there for a reason .

Thank you Lee W for the princess page reference, don't know why I could not find that.

Can always count on the CC boards to get the correct answer.

  9. Yep , had the problem also, but thank goodness not 12 times . I really do try to keep it away from magnetic items , cases, both tablet and phone and purses as well. Think I will try the lanyard thingie see if that helps.

Also thanks Loonbeam : Explanation helps me understand the problem better.

  10. Sorry I know there must be a thread on the boards regarding this , but can't make the search tool work.

DH wants to know if he is allowed to bring a small pock knife onboard, I should know this but can't remember if it is permitted or not. Thanks for any response. Appreciate it.

  11. Last year we had issues with port cancelation due to hurricane , we had booked Princess excursions, we were not charged for those excursions and the port fees were not charged, the ship was re routed to 3 different ports and excursions for those ports were offered and new port fees charged for those ports, it worked out fine. Princess did their best to accomodate the passangers with options. Yes we missed going to the ports we wanted to see , but it was unavoidable, and it worked out fine.

  12. DH and I have both had cancer surgery, so we both get our flu shots every year , also we take care of grandchildren on a regular basis, and you know they bring everything home, so the shot is necessary. We also got the pneumonia shot about 8 years ago and just got the Previnar pneumonia shot as additional protection against other strains. Having said that, yes we do get a sore arm for a few days, and a bit listless, but we get over that. I realize that each person reacts differently, but for us, we are glad we are able to get the shots.

  13. My DH has had real problems with swollen legs on cruises in the past, so for the last 4 or 5 cruises we brought a case of water for him , and bingo.... no swelling in his legs. I can drink the ship water no problem , but he can not , it does not matter that it is purified, he just has problems with it. He tried all the fixes in this thread ,parsley , the dark cherry capsules , the arnical gel and brush , nope, nothing worked . But bringing our own water seems to be the ticket. One other thing we think has helped the last cruise he does not order the soups at dinner any more , they are delicious , but way to much salt. I guess different strokes for different folks.

    Happy Cruising all.

  14. We also have done the canal a three times. Twice from LA to FL and once FL to LA, both are great. The last one we did the two day canal ,which included Panama City , we would suggest that if you can , you get more Panama land time that way and see more. We were on the Coral last time and the Emerald deck has a great viewing area on aft deck , close up look at the lock operations. It is a wonderful cruise, be sure to check which port stops are important to you on both sides of the canal , then make you decisions with that in consideration. I also agree with those that say , you will not want to be in your cabin during the canal day , you will want to be out on decks for viewing. Hope it works out for you and that you have a great cruise.
