  1. That is an appalling story on so many levels. Wow. If Viking is going to insist on continuing to test everyone every single day (and limit their post-infection-positive-allowance window to just 90 days instead of 6 months as, say, Canada does), the least they could do is be smart about it and accommodate for false positives. As was so obviously the case in your situation. It sounds like Viking actually continued to test you after you were put in quarantine — many quarantined passengers haven’t been provided repeat tests — but then they apparently did nothing with the consistently negative results. That’s unconscionable.
  2. There’s a fun book about this called “The Billionaire’s Vinegar.” An interesting look into the elite wine business back when a bottle of wine purported to have been owned by Thomas Jefferson came up for auction. Things spiraled from there.
  3. I’ll bet we’re close to that future now. I picked up Covid a couple of weeks ago at a party along with about 20 other people (that I know about). To a person, this has acted like a cold. (One person also had some digestive issues; he was the only one who wasn’t vaccinated.) Very different from when my husband had Covid two years ago. Thank God!
  4. So women don’t have to wear a cocktail dress or gown?
  5. Right now we’re thinking our next trip (after the voucher cruise in the fall) will be a safari. Not sure we’re cut out for the cruising life anymore. Golfing in Turkey? Fascinating. I would never have pegged Turkey as a golf destination.
  6. We’ve had GTY cabins twice. In both cases we were assigned our rooms months before the cruise, both times in the same category we had booked.
  7. We’ll be doing this ourselves in Bergen, too (unless the US finally stops requiring it before we go). Looking forward to hearing how it goes for you tomorrow. Safe travels!
  8. That was the bumpiest part of our cruise, too. Lots of broken dishes!
  9. Money. That’s what drives most business decisions, near as I can tell. I have to assume Viking thinks its target market still wants to be tested daily, and that they’ll lose that market if they stop.
  10. What a refreshingly sane document. Yet another reason to look forward to visiting Bergen in the fall.
  11. Isn’t that the truth. I think half the state either has a second home in Florida or has moved there.
  12. That photo of the two of you with the rainbow behind is a keeper. That one deserves a place on the mantle. Not that you’ll ever be home to see it!
  13. I’m afraid I made you a target for some of my frustration up there. I apologize. Many people on various Viking cruise boards have advised people to “just not cruise with Viking” if we don’t like the protocols. I wish that were possible for us, but it’s not, unless we’re willing to walk away from a lot of money. I’m sure I could’ve said that more kindly. As you pointed out, you offered several solutions earlier. Unfortunately none will work for us. Barring a medical catastrophe, we are going on a Viking cruise this fall. I wish I could look forward to it more.
  14. Only partially correct. We won’t cruise with Viking so long as the daily testing is in effect — after the infernal vouchers have been used. I wouldn’t be banging my head against a wall this hard if I could truly just walk away at this point.
  15. Ah. Just saw this. Yes, that’s probably right. If you paid with a voucher, you’ll likely not get a cash refund.
  16. When we encountered this in January, we were told by our TA that canceling an extension more than 30 days in advance could result in a refund. Because we canceled just 2 weeks before the cruise, the money for the extensions was rolled into the voucher for the canceled cruise. Excursions are handled differently. Those can be canceled for a refund closer to the cruise date, even on the cruise itself. Don’t remember the particulars, but I believe that info is on My Viking Journey.
  17. Couldn’t one make the case that quarantine counts as “unused days”? I sure would try.
  18. I really hope you’re wrong about this. Being quarantined in a cabin is definitely a major trip interruption, even without extra hotel and food expenses. Your vacation is a shambles at that point, and you’ve effectively lost the rest of your expensive cruise. I hope we never have to find out one way or the other.
  19. Antoni Gaudi: More is more. 😄 Viking River offers “relaxed” tours for those with mobility issues. Seems like a no-brainer to offer them on Ocean, too. I wonder why they don’t.
  20. Fun! We’ll be boarding her in September, too.
  21. Sorry to hear this. I hope your symptoms are mild. (I currently have Covid myself, though am not on a ship.) Do you have travel insurance, and does it cover breaks in your trip due to Covid? That’s the first thing to check. If not, then you’ll have to contact Viking and see what they’re willing to compensate. I’ve heard a range of answers.
  22. She says it’s the Rhine River cruise. Hopefully a sign of things to come!
