  1. Last time we checked the soft serve was gluten free. Ask a White Shirt to confirm as it could have changed.

In the MDR they’ll have a list of GF ice creams and sherberts.

Yep, just use a bowl instead of a cone! Also, if you're really sensitive to gluten/celiac, check the soft-serve dispenser prior to getting your ice cream... sometimes people shove their cones up on the nozzle and it leaves crumbs. I've had to skip the ice cream a couple of times because of this :(:(:(

  2. We had an aft Havana on the Vista. Would not do again unless cheap. I LOVE sitting outside on the balcony, especially at night. However, the afts do not have any sort of protection from the elements when it rains and the sun BEATS down on you. It was way too hot. Because there is no overhang, there is also a lot less privacy. We barely used the balcony, but we definitely used the Havana area a lot.

So we have a Havana inside booked on our upcoming Horizon cruise, and will be using the price difference to enjoy ourselves for a couple days in NYC prior to cruising. :)

  3. I've done two massages on Carnival, one on the Vista and I forget which other ship. The first one, the lady didn't try to push me into the products once I told her I was not going to buy anything and the massage was relaxing. On the Vista, the lady tried to tell me I had varicose veins (I don't) and that I needed to buy the special massager/scrubber thing, and then tried to sell me on all the products, etc. and this was after saying I wasn't interested. Ruined the whole relaxation thing. And it wasn't even a good massage.

  4. The Horizon is a sister ship to the Vista. It has an adults-only serenity area, but no pool. Like the Vista, it will have the Havana area with pool. You must book a Havana cabin (12 yrs of age and older) to use the pool during the day, but it opens up to the entire ship after 7 pm.

  5. What do you mean, cannot be lowered?

If you book early saver, you get price protection, so if the rate drops, you get the price difference back as a lower final payment (or OBC if after final payment).

You are a past Carnival cruiser, so at a minimum, you should get the past guest rate. Not sure why you'd want to pay the full rate? But to answer your question, I'd take the lower rate.

  6. Before leaving, contact the Special Needs department to let them know. Once you are on board and the dining room opens in the afternoon, stop by and talk to the hostess. They will give you the menu and you will special order dinner for that night (and each night at dinner you can put in your brunch/lunch/dinner orders for the next day). Up on Lido, find a hostess or someone in the white uniforms and they can help you.

Carnival has always been wonderful when it comes to my diet (gluten free, celiac disease, ugh). I'm sure your daughter will be fine :)

  7. The last time we received a free upgrade was our very first cruise back in 2007 (interior to extended balcony). We've never received an upsell call. I think I've booked two balcony guarantee rooms in the last couple of years - once I ended up in a regular balcony and once in an extended balcony.

Your best bet to get the type of cabin you want is to book the one you want :) Otherwise, book a guarantee and hope for the best (but be happy with what you get) or hope that you get randomly selected for an upsell call.

  8. In February I contacted them at casino@carnival.com and was told that email would be deactivated in the coming weeks and future inquiries should go to www.oceanplayersclub.com.

They have cut back on comps based on previous cruises and the last couple of times I asked they said I did not qualify for any pre-boarding comps or offers.

I sent an email to the casino@carnival.com address. It didn't bounce back, but if I don't hear from them in the next week or two I'll try the oceanplayersclub contact. Occasionally DH will get offers on discounted casino sailings, so maybe he'll get an offer ;p

  9. We actually changed to 5110 instead (extended balcony in front of ship). Any comments on that room?

I've stayed in this room twice on the Pride. It's a great room, though you do hear the music coming up from the shows at night. The balcony is very large and nice, it has a lounge chair. However, you are very close to the front of the ship and right below the bridge. I could see up into the bridge, but that also meant they could see me :o I will say that those balconies at the very front can be quite windy. I would stay in one of these rooms in a heartbeat again!
