  1. Just off another 10 day cruise on the Emerald. The ship is in great shape and overall another fantastic cruise in spite of some of the most offensive cruise passengers I have ever encountered.

Let me know any questions you may have.

What made the passengers offensive? I'm on the Emerald in March - don't scare me!

  2. I can't answer regarding the Oasis, but on any cruise we have done on Princess and HAL most people stay in the same clothes and most people follow the dress code. Occasionally we would see someone very casually dressed (shorts, t-shirt) come into the main theatre or see them around the ship, and they stand out as being out of place.

  3. There is a shopping plaza across the street from the Hampton. The plaza has a few small restaurants that I have seen people recommend as having good food. One is Thai and the other is more a bar and grill. There is also a burger place, a pizza place and a Subway. Personally, we have eaten three times at a good German restaurant across the street from the far end of the plaza, called Old Heidelburg. They have good food and reasonable prices.

If German isn't what you want, just ask the front desk staff. They can recommend other nearby places and if they are within a mile or two they will shuttle you there for free. Have a great stay.

  4. The only onboard benefits that a two star mariner gets that a one star doesn't is a photo of the ship and a 10% discount on logo clothing (subject to exclusions). Stay out of the shops, forget the photo and enjoy your cruise.

I agree. We just cruised on the Maasdam, my first cruise after I turned 2 star. I forgot to ask for my free photo of the ship! (I think I will survive without it). I didn't buy any logo clothing so that didn't benefit me either.

My husband turned 2 star on this cruise. He received his 2 star lapel pin at the end of the cruise.

  5. We booked balcony cabins our first couple of cruises. Then my husband suggests we try an interior. His rational was that we would save a lot of money and we would be able to cruise more often with the savings. We thought about how often we had actually used our balcony on each cruise and realized we spent very little time out there.

We decided to try an inside with the understanding that if I didn't like it, we would go back to a balcony cabin in future. I tend to be a bit claustrophobic so I wasn't sure how I would like being in a inside cabin.

Well, we liked our interior cabin and had no problem with claustrophia. We found it was great for sleeping, being dark and quiet. Since that first interior we have only booked interior cabins and been very happy. I know it would not be to everyone's taste but it works for us.

My advice is to try it - you might love it and have more money to book your next cruise. :)

  6. Thanks for the info. My mom who is 82 expressed an interest in an Alaskan cruise, and my sister and I thought it would be nice to take her. We want to make sure we pick an area that is safe and handy to what we need. Also I get loyalty points for the Hampton! That would be great if they have a shuttle to port. Originally I was looking at the Pan Pacific Hotel, but boy is that pricey!

Thanks again for the quick responses.:)

  7. Thinking about a cruise to Alaska from Vancouver in July. Thinking of staying the night prior to cruise at the Hampton Inn on Robson st. Is that an okay area, safe for 3 ladies on their own? Is it an area that there would be things to do nearby? Any suggestions.

I looked at an online taxi rate calculator, and it says the taxi from the airport to this hotel would be about $37.00, and from the hotel to the pier would be about $8.00. Does that sound right? Any advie would be appreciated.

  8. For a trip next week, I will appreciate any advice about choosing which of these places to visit a volcano and which to snorkel at, if I cannot do both. Or in both places is one activity much better?

    thanks

We were just in St. Lucia in mid December and did an excursion off the ship (HAL's Maasdam). It was a driving tour of the island- we were picked up in Castries at the cruise terminal and did a five hour tour that ended up in Soufriere- we went to the volcano- interesting. At the end we were dropped off at the pier in Soufriere and our ship met us there. Overall an enjoyable tour. I am not sure, but I don't think St. Kitts's has a volcano, so if that is what you want to see I think you have to do it in St Lucia.

When we were in St Kitt's last cruise we did the sugar train excursion- interesting tour of the whole island. Not a snorkeller so can't give you any info that way.

    Have a nice cruise.

  9. I can't believe the nerve of some people being critical of you for dressing nicely!

Maybe it is time for you to give another cruiseline a try. I can only suggest HAL or Princess as they are the only ones we have experience on. For the most part the dress code is followed and you would fit right in. I have not sailed Carnival, but from what I have read, you will find HAL or Princess more upscale, more elegant and classy. This will probaly be more what you are looking for.

Give it a try. Good luck and happy cruising.

  10. We have travelled to that area in early to mid December a couple of times and overall we had good weather. Warm to hot most days. Only a couple of showers that didn't last long. Seas were pretty calm except for a day or 2. Overall we find it a nice time to cruise. We are cruising again in December this year and are hoping our weather will be as good as past years.

  11. Glad everything went so well for you. We stay at the same hotel each time we cruise from Ft. Lauderdale and have always been pleased. That plaza is so handy for any last minute needs. And I have to agree with you: the food at Old Heidelberg is great!

    Have a great cruise.
