  1. I could be wrong but on a ship, you always use satellite with a cell to make a call. The charges are based on satellite costs and are not Verizon costs. Although you are billed from Verizon for your ship calls, they are not based on a plan from Verizon. I could be wrong but I've cruised a lot and always with Verizon and have always experienced that.

On land is a whole 'mother story. Verizon has pretty decent plans these days when traveling or u can just swap out SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.

  2. I read last night on a Carnival site somewhere that it was open for lunch and dinner.

Maybe it changed to just lunch but it would be great if dinner too.

I won't go for lunch but I would go for dinner.

See my post #11. Lunch only.

  3. Upload to your S&S account and then choose to have a check issued and mailed to you at end. We had our credit balance last month issued via a check (did not want to carry more cash home) and it came within 7 days of cruise. Not a big deal....

If you place funds from a carnival gift card on your sign and sail account, and at the end of the cruise, there is a balance, a new carnival gift card is issued. However, I have read of a few people receiving a check in the mail but according to carnivals website, a gift card is issued for the remaining balance.

As the funds placed on you sign and sail account from a carnival gift card or from cash/ credit card? If it was the former and they mailed you a check, you got lucky.

  4. Also, we are NOT "high rollers" in the casino. The offer we received in the mail, came a few YEARS, since our only previous Carnival cruise. It was not based on our point play, as we spent little money in the casino, but did use their casino card. I was astonished to have received the offer. I had B2B cruises booked, from it.

How little is little in terms of the casino and to use the casino, do you need a casino card? Is there a cost involved in getting one?

  5. Isnt soap self-cleaning? Bahahahaha

Agoraphobia (ag-uh-ruh-FOE-be-uh) is a type of anxiety disorder in which you fear and often avoid places or situations that might cause you to panic and make you feel trapped, helpless or embarrassed.

Mysophobia, also known as verminophobia, germophobia, germaphobia, bacillophobia and bacteriophobia, is a pathological fear of contamination and germs.

Ataxophobia is the fear of disorder or untidiness. The origin of the word a is Greek (meaning no), taxo is Greek (meaning order) and phobia is Greek (meaning fear).

  6. End result....most of you were right. All of what I paid by gift cards will be re-issued onto a new gift card and mailed to me. And the rest will be issued to the original funding source. And I definitely will use the gift card to book a cruise in the future!

When you paid to carnival via gift cards, were those carnival gift cards or just regular visa or mc gift cards? I'm confused bc you said you will use the new gift cars that they send to you to book a new cruise in the future. Didn't you want the refund so you can pay bills?

If you used carnival gift cards to pay,I understand them just re-issuing you a new carnival card with the refund. If you paid via visa / MasterCard, then they really should just send you a check.

Lastly, since your old checking a not was closed, they just sgould send that share of the refund to a new checking account. I don't know what you mean by original funding source.

  7. My plan is to keep the Ipad in the cabin and only check FB Messaging once a day (just for emergencies at home). My goal is to spend as little time on the Ipad as possible.

I plan to turn my (Verizon) phone to Airplane Mode but turn off the data. However, I will take the phone to ports because I'm going to use the camera feature on the phone.

Do you think this is sufficient to protect me against any Verizon surprises when I get home?

    Yes.

  8. LOL at you. I'm not ashamed at all. And believe me I can afford the $25. I just bought a Mercedes last week. But to me the price of admission is worth what it's worth to me and that's a buck. Like someone else mentioned they don't need our money...

You should stay in NJ with your warranted Mercedes and spend the 2 bucks on admission to all those world class museums you have there.

  9. The Doubletree on Wall Street is $110 a night for Thursday and Friday nights.

The Roosevelt is $118 a night.

Row NYC (Times Square) $114 a night.

The Lexington (Midtown) $97 a night.

The Franklin Hotel (upper east side) $98 a night.

Seton Hotel (mid town) $103 a night.

A quick search of Expedia found quite a few choices for around $100 a night for Thursday and Friday night.

The person mentioned under $100. First try and actually book those hotels at those rates and then when you do, add three levels of taxes and tell me if any are still under a hundred (or charge by the hour). By the way, most under $150 without tax have a shared bath if your into that kind of thing.

  10. LOL at you. I'm not ashamed at all. And believe me I can afford the $25. I just bought a Mercedes last week. But to me the price of admission is worth what it's worth to me and that's a buck. Like someone else mentioned they don't need our money...

Admission to the MET is only worth a dollar? You're right, the MET doesn't need or want your money. I didn't say you should be ashamed but owning a Mercedes doesn't mean you are rich, classy or have culture though.

  11. https://www.hotwire.com/hotels/#!/hotel/results/New%2520York%2520(and%2520vicinity)%252C%2520New%2520York%252C%2520United%2520States%2520of%2520America/02-11-2016/02-13-2016/1/2/0

    That's a hotwire link.

One more time. My uncle was a Docent at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1989 to 2009. There is a SUGGESTED donation. There is no entrance fee. It is very common for seniors and students and those who simply cannot afford the museum to not pay.

They have one of the healthiest endowments on the planet. They do not charge admission because they don't have to.

I find it hard to believe you've lived in NYC all your life and don't know this.

The Hotwire link brought me nowhere. Tell me a hotel name in NYC (and not a link) that doesn't charge by the hour and is under 100 buck for a night.

I don't care if YOU find it hard to believe where I live. I have lived all my 44 years in Manhattan or Brooklyn. I currently live across from Pete's Tavern in Gramercy in the huge white brick apartment building. Ask for Claudia. They will buzz up. I'll will point out some REAL free activities. Better yet, just buy Time Out NY.

I don't care about endowments. A suggested donation is just that. Donate if you can and here is the amount we suggest. If the museum was absolutely free and no one at all ever paid, the museum would shut down. Sure, if the museum had enough endowments to self support, it wouldn't recommend donations for entrance. Don't try and take 'advantage' of something just because you 'can'.

Seriously, if you have money to take a cruise then donate something when you enter the MET....even if it's ten bucks. If you dont have the means to go to that museum, then there are other legitimate things to do in NYC that are truly free like riding the ferry ( in the freezing cold wind of winter).

  12. They didn't spend any of the money they were planning to spend in ports or on board for the most part.

Hotel rooms in NYC this weekend are under $100.

You can spend a nominal amount in NYC and have a lot of fun. Things like the Staten Island Ferry and Metropolitan Museum of Art are free not to mention a zillion other things you can do.

Another add....the MET is NOT free. A donation of $25 is recommended for adults is recommended. If you walk in and don't donate, shame on you. They are entitled to a donation for you to go in. It's one of the top museums in the world. They did not get that way by all people strolling in for free.

Oh, and the Staten Island Ferry in freezing weather is NOT a lot of fun.

Please tell me what hotel rooms this weekend are under $100..I would love to hear this. I have lived in NYC all my life and KNOW this isn't true. I currently live in Manhattan. Even hotels that charge by the hour on the west side get close to a hundred bucks after 3 hours. LOL but true.

  15. Our Vet developed this disease this year and it is horrible. He will recover but it will take at least a year. When he first got it they thought he had a stroke. They eliminated a stroke and transferred him to Vanderbilt where it was finally diagnosed.

A friend of my mom's died from this. He did have a stroke, was paralyzed then died.

  16. Verizon has a plan now for Global travel allowing you to use your plan's minutes and data from your regular US plan......it is $10 day.....most countries are included. You just call Verizon before you leave and tell them when you want the plan. Pay for only the days you are gone!

  17. will they exchange USD to Euro and vice versa also ? any tips on getting the best exchange rates when traveling ? as you can see ive never had to swap out my money before

No money exchange on the Vista of USD to Euro. The best rate of exchange is via a credit card ESP one that has no foreign transaction fees. Before you leave, find which of your cards has no foreign transaction fee. If you don't have one, try and apply for one before you leave.

As for cash, I've recently researched and found AAA (you can order euros online) and HSBC having the best exchange rates right now. (sOme banks need to order euros for you so don't wait until the last minute...bigger banks have euros on hand). Do not exchange at the airport or the hotel you are staying at. The rates are terrible usually.

As to debit cards, people claim this is also a good rate but my 2 cards each charge a fee totaling 5% of the money you take out plus either $5 or $6 fee for each withdrawal. If you use the card as a debit card to make a purchase, the fees are similar as well. I suppose if you do only one or two withdrawals on an entire trip, it might be worth your while.

I would call each bank you have a credit card with and each bank you have a debit or arm card with and get all your rates and fees. tHen take one or 2 of each. Do not rely soley on American Express in Europe as they are not widely accepted. They also have the largest fees. Also, AMEX is now connected with Travelex and their exchange rates and fees are terrible.

For safety sake, keep a copy of the front and back of each credit card you take with you. In case you lose the card, you have the tel number with you to call and cancel the card. Having the card number is handy too so they won't spend time searching for it when you are calling. (Just keep that paperwork with the card info secure).

Lastly, any card you take with you, call the respective banks and tell them that you are using the cards during XYZ time at ABC countries. That way, your cards hopefully won't get declined when you start using them. Otherwise they might get blocked for suspicious activity. Even when you do call and advise them, they still might freeze you. That's when a second card always comes in handy as does a cell phone.

I hope all this helps. I believe we are on the same Vista cruise on 5/14 and I just started doing my homework. LoL

PS Do not exchange money at a store (to make a purchase) or pay USD for items in Europe in a store with euro price tags. That exchange rate is probably the worst next to a hotel rate. Obviously, if it's all you have or the item is incredibly inexpensive to start with, it really doesn't matter.

  18. I cashed my balance out at the kiosk on the last night around 1 am after all our spending was done. Done it twice this way. No casino. And no issue other than hating that last night on the ship knowing it's all over.
