  1. Thanks so much for the info. I get to cruise with the Scientific American Travel Group. Should be a barnburner!!

    Helen

I am sooooo worried about travelling with a knitters group. Do you think that they will 'yarn' all day and all night? Also worried that they will 'needle' me if I have to share a table in the MDR. I am guessing that they will have a very structured 'pattern' for each day.

  2. AIUI, the balconies are deeper on 7 and 8, but 8 has the disadvantage of being directly underneath the pool area at the aft end of 9.

Is it only the balconies that are bigger? A couple of posters on other threads have suggested that the cabins are a little wider or longer than other V cabins. Do you know if this is correct?

  3. I'll be cruising with HAL for the first time early this fall and have been wondering, The only Tuxedo i currently own has a jacket with a notch lapel. Will this be noticeably inappropriate?

If it was good enough for Sean Connery............

  4. Maybe, but elegance never gets old! My fourteen year old daughter is looking forward to wearing gowns and sparkly cocktail dresses. She will be gorgeous and I won't rain on her parade by cautioning her that some people will be dressed down.

Your daughter will look wonderful. remember to take lots of photos for her.

I found a beautiful 1920's tux in the local charity shop. It is made of fine wool trimmed with satin silk cuffs and shawl collar. Made in Italy. My sons love it and have worn it to school and university balls. Beautifully styled clothing never goes out of fashion.

  5. You read my mind. I will have proper formal dress and "open-toed, flat, sporty shoes" due to foot surgery on my upcoming cruise. Wonder what the fashion police will report about that. Kinda like a man wearing tennies with a tux.

:) Come and sit with me pv girl, we would make a matching pair!! I have had polio. I wear my fancy dresses with my flat lace up shoes. I do see the glances, and sometimes hear the whispered comments, but I do not let them spoil my love of life and travel. :)

  6. I am looking to do the Dec 18 Panama cruise on Amsterdam leaving San Diego on December 18. This will probably be my only time doing the canal. Are there any reasons why this would not be a good time of the year?

Suggestions for a moderate price Hotel pre-cruise? Best place for an OV on board? Thanks.

  7. I've done two HAL Med cruises over the last two years, booking through HAL in Australia, so to answer your questions:

    1. Gratuities are not included - unless your travel agent is paying for them as an incentive. TAs often say this but this is not true for HAL.

    2. A hold will be placed on your credit card to cover onboard spending, not just gratuities.

    3. I paid the exact fare that was in force when I paid my initial deposit, regardless if the exchange rate altered.

I hope you enjoy your cruise. The fact that I have done 2 Med cruises over the last two years shows you how much I enjoyed my time in the Med with HAL.

Thank you. That is exactly the information that I wanted.

  8. We are from NZ travelling with DB and SIL(first time cruisers) on a Med cruise. They are from Australia. I know that you have different laws with regards to cruise prices, so I have some questions.

    1. When they booked, the travel agent said that the price quoted was inclusive of gratuities. Is it normal in Australia for this to be included in the fare quoted?

    2. If so, will their credit card still have a $60 hold placed on it when they board?

    3. When they come to pay the final part of the fare, will this be the exact amount as quoted in $A, or will it be based on the $US-$A conversion on the day of payment.

    Thanks for your help.

  9. Thank you Linda. My thoughts exactly.

I believe the most important point is that no one is right, and no one is wrong, with their impression of Prinsendam. We all like something different and what is wonderful for you, may not be the same for me. Those of us who love P like small, older ships from when they were built with quality materials to sail the seas. Not the newer ships that are more like floating hotels. There is no hype about Prinsendam that overrates her. There is a group of people who love sailing her, thus the high repeater rate. If people are underwhelmed or disappointed, it is because they like something different. I've been on ships where I've been disappointed, and others thought the ship was great (Ocean Princess for example). I also wasn't impressed with Amsterdam, which I guess is an S class. People either love P or not. We like her and will pay the premium. You did not, along with some others. That's fine. We are not pretending that she is something she is not. What bothers me is when people post that she doesn't live up to the hype. She does for many of us. We are mostly well traveled folks who just happen to like a smaller, old ship. She's what we like, but if you don't---that's OK. We've said that many, many times here---that she is not for everyone. If someone sails her and was disappointed, they really only have themselves to blame, because there are reviews that bash her!! People shouldn't be disappointed to embark an old ship with issues, because we have never tried to hide that! It just means they didn't do the research!
