  1. You are right just 1.6 km walk. 15 to 18 minutes. I cannot see why you should not make the 16:15 bus to Stavanger. Disembarkation should not take that long.

For a snack I do not know the bus station that well. Assume you will pass a cafe when walking.

Eating on the buss might depend on company. At Nettbuss you can bring and eat your food. Some busses might make stops where it’s possible to buy a snack. 5 hours in a bus is long time. I would certainly bring a snack and drink for the trip.

Enjoy Midnatssol (midnight sun) - when is your cruise?

Thanks for your responses. We end our cruise August 1st in Bergen.

We will be traveling on Kystbussen. I’ve tried to contact them to ask about eating/purchasing snacks at the stops but can’t get the email link to work from their site. The flight to Stavanger that fit our timeline would have meant flying to Oslo, changing planes and getting into Stavanger even later than the bus arrives. I also posted my questions on the Ports of Call thread here on CC since I wasn’t sure this was an appropriate question to ask here. Everyone is always so helpful. Thanks

  2. I posted my questions on Hurtigruten boards and then found your awesome board. So, here goes my questions.

We are disembarking The Midnastol in Bergen (14:30?) and have no idea how long that takes. I read that they disembark by deck but we do not have an assigned cabin at this time. We then hope to take the 16:15 bus to Stavanger. We would like to get a snack to eat on the bus (if eating on bus is allowed). My question is if the walk from Hurtigruten terminal to the bus station with a small rolling bag is doable or would we be better off taking a taxi? Are there places to grab a to go snack for the bus?

    Thank you for any thoughts/tips/advice.

  3. Hi, I tried to find this info on my own but thought I might want to check with the knowledgeable folks here.

August 1st arriving on Midnastol (14:30?). My cabin is a guarantee, so I do not know my deck or how long disembarkation might take. I need to get to the bus station to take bus to Stavanger and hopefully can make it in time for 16:15 bus. If i’m correct it looks like an 18 minute walk or a 6 minute taxi. What is the walk like with a small rolling bag? I thought it might be best to try to walk since I would then be in the bus for 5 hours but didn’t know if there would be adequate time. Additionally I would like to pick up a snack/sandwich/something to eat on the bus...if eating on the bus is allowed. Is there a place to purchase a snack near terminal that is convenient if I walk? Thanks for any tips, thoughts, advice.

  4. Hello,

From reading it seems I will need some Kroner for smaller purchases (and public toilets?)

We arrive in Kirkenes at 8pm, plan on taking airport bus to hotel and board ship the next day. If I read correctly I will either need a mobile app to pay for the bus at a reduced rate or if I pay cash, it is at a higher rate. Is there an ATM at the Kirkenes Airport? If not, I have a 2 hour layover in Oslo that I assume I could get some Kroner there. I realize that’s not the best exchange rate but it just doesn’t seem worth it to use my local bank here in the US to obtain Kroner since I (hopefully) won’t be needing that much.

    Any thoughts/advice is appreciated.

  5. Hello,

This is probably another tartanexile81 directed question but if others have thoughts/experiences, i’d appreciate hearing them.

We are on HAL Konigsdam (HALs biggest ship) arriving South Queensferry on August 7th and leaving August 8th. I am curious what the guesstimate is as to actual tender time from the ship to the pier (length of time actually spent riding in the tender) and the reverse. I realize that there are lots of variables but wonder if someone has thoughts on this.

    Thank you

  6. hank you all for your comments. When I started thinking about it, it was Princess that had the outdoor screen with movies and I thoroughly enjoyed them, they served popcorn and hot chocolate.

    Marlster

Kdam has a selection of movie treats right there by the pool at the NY Deli - popcorn, chicken wings, pizza, and others

  7. Here is a photo of the top of the pier beachdreaming. I took it a year or two ago and since then gates have been installed at the end of the buildings.

There is a narrow road between the gates and the red car you can see. The shuttle bus is to the left - can you see the white car in the photo? Its waits there. Tour guides stand by the yellow kiosk where bus, train times etc are displayed. Taxis wait right outside the Hawes Inn just on the other side of the road.

The railway station is at the end of the bridge and so you can see how high the steps are to get there

As usual tartanexile81 you are a wealth of information! I thank you as do hundreds (maybe thousands of others) of others.

  8. tartanexile81 - thank you for this post about the shuttle with photos. I had seen your awesome thread about the train/with photos but hadn’t seen this one about the shuttle bus. In fact I had just seen your new 2018 thread about this years shuttle and I asked a question there. It is going to take me a bit to read these posts but I will read them.

I am so sorry some folks feel the need to use your threads to post about problems out of your control. Maybe those folks need to start a new thread voicing their concerns?

Thank you again for all that you do for fellow cruisers. You are SO appreciated.

  9. tartanexile81 - thank you for your ongoing wealth of information and assistance.

I have also viewed your 2014 post about using the train to/from Queensferry. Your photos of exactly what to expect are invaluable. My question is about catching this years shuttle and if it also involves walking up those stairs like you do for the train? Additionally, if you booked a private car or taxi to pick you up/drop off at Queensferry - are those also at the top of those stairs or is there a road closer to the pier?

Sorry if you have already explained this and i’ve managed to miss the information. I really appreciate any input you might have. Thank you.

  10. Thought some might find this interesting: We were overnight onboard in Copenhagen and at the port furthest out of town. We had made arrangements to leave the ship at 4:00 AM to catch an early am flight to start another trip. The ship called to arrange a taxi for us the evening before. Driver was there on time and when we got to the airport, he declined our tip. He said that he makes a good wage and tipping was not necessary. Never had that happen before.

  11. We used Urban Adventures in St P and loved it. It’s an international organization but each city is owned/privately run. We went on the “ St P Like a Local” tour and we very lucky to be taken around by Anastasia (local owner). She was very flexible and amazing. I would think she would work with you on setting up a custom tour versus one that is routinely offered. The only negative (for some) is that at the time we went, she wasn’t allowed to bring a vehicle into the port area and we needed to walk from the terminal to port security gate, take our tour and then walk back to,the terminal from the port security gate.

After we got back to the ship and compared Tour stories, we had some jealous fellow passengers.

  12. What is the general refund policy if I prebook an excursion and then decide to cancel it before the actual cruise? I couldn’t find the policy in the description of the excursions. In the past, I seem to remember that on a previous cruise some excursions had a stricter cancellation timeframe than others but it was noted by each individual excursion. I would probably be cancelling weeks before (if I cancelled at all) and not just a few days before.

  13. We really enjoy them and so hope they will continue to be offered. We next sail on the Kdam and know all the extra dining options there but would still like a special Chefs Table. Also, we had the original Culinary Arts Center dinners and liked them. Hope the new ATK tapas is a good replacement.

  14. We are there during the Tattoo and so expect even more congestion than usual. Why are trains ever cancelled? Do they ever add trains during the Tattoo? We think taking the train would be the easiest but travel mates are saying they prefer taking a taxi back to the port for our 5pm sailing. That just seems like a huge chance to have major traffic congestion if we take a taxi - plus added expense being stuck in traffic. Does anyone have a guesstimate as to how long each mode of transport would take from Edinburgh to South Queensferry? Or additional rationale to sway me one way or they other? Thanks

  15. to baggage check, but certainly not that long. It depends what airline and what destination.

It is an easy flat walk to Centraal Station. Watch out for the many bikers, donot walk on their path. Will take about 10/15 minutes.

Trainstation is right under the airport. Difficult to tell how long your walk will be, but certainly not that long. It depends what airline and what destination. Check more details on this site: https://www.schiphol.nl/en/

    Thank you for your help.

  16. First time in Amsterdam. Wondering about taking the train from port to airport. We have no trouble rolling our luggage and getting it on/off most trains. How is the terrain between the port to the train. This would also be on a Sunday. How far is after getting off the train at the airport to baggage check? Taxis are fine but not if we have to “fight” to get one at the port and instead we can use that time to get to the train station.

    Appreciate any thoughts/input about this.

  17. Just did a cruise on the Veendam. I had two mirrors! One was the standard, attached to an arm on the desk one, that I've grown used to. Imagine my surprise when one day a second mirror appeared-this one in a blue bag embroidered "makeup mirror" just like the hair dryer bag. I don't know if this means the attached to the desk one will eventually disappear? I usually apply makeup in the bathroom and have never really used the makeup mirror. Also just some additional info-my daughters had a HAL power strip in their cabin so I asked and received one also. That is really helpful with all the electronics needing to be plugged in. I wonder if the Veendam will ever get extra USB ports?

    St. Louis Sal

Yes, the new makeup mirror we got was in the blue embroidered HAL bag that matches the hair dryer bag. Guess they delivered your new one before they got around to taking out the old lighted one.

  18. This summer on Zuiderdam, we started the cruise with a lighted mirror attached to the moveable arm. One day they gave us a notice saying they would be in our cabin to add extra USB ports. That evening was formal night. Imagine my surprise to be getting ready for dinner, I reached out for the mirror and it was no longer there. I wasn’t very happy at all. There and on the bedside stand were where additional USB ports had been installed. After dinner, the cabin steward had left a “How are we doing?” card on my bed. Well, since I was still a bit irked, I vented and filled it out but then just tossed it on to the vanity realizing that I probably wouldn’t ever send it in. The next day I got a phone call from front desk apologizing for taking my mirror and they offered to reinstall it. I guess the cabin steward saw it and turned it in. I declined their offer but they did deliver a freestanding two sided mirror for the cabin.

This was right before dry dock and I think they were trying to get various tasks done (a lot of balcony work our side) before dry dock because out of our 12 day cruise they asked for access to our balcony cabin on 6 out of the 12 days. We allowed it the first 5 times but turned them down the 6th time.....it was way too inconvenient because they were using our cabin as an access route for all the workers for that section of the balconies from 9am to 5pm. One day they tracked in lots of dust and paint chips. I actually left an apology note to our cabin steward because I didn’t want him to think we had made the mess. Additionally at 8 am one morning, I was opening up our drapes to find a worker already on our balcony. Needless to say by the end of the cruise we were unhappy that we had been so accommodating. Never again will allow so much access to our cabin or balcony.
