  1. We booked our first Alaska cruise and cruise tour yesterday evening. We will be sailing southbound on the Radiance with a 5 night cruise tour prior. We chose a cabin on the port side of the ship and I would like to be sure that this is the best side to be on. I remember a thread regarding new cabin categories for Alaska, but I am not able to locate the thread again. If I remember correctly the information on the thread was that the cabins would be priced differently for having a "preferred view". The cabins for the new bookings are categorized differently for both sides of the ship, ours is a 4G Spacious Balcony and the other side Spacious Balcony cabins are 2G. The pricing is the same for either side. As expected, when I call, no one can give me an explanation. While cabins are still available, I would like to be sure that we're on the side with the best view.

Hi Lorraine, we did this cruise in August on radiance however we did the northbound to seward, then did the land tour part. We stayed on deck 8 mid hump room

8594 was an E2 but I don't know what that converts to within the new room categories. We had a wonderful time. If I can answer any questions just let me know. I don't think you can go wrong, the only time we viewed the scenery from the balcony was Hubbard and they did a 360 turn so everyone got a good view, up top was too full and getting pictures was difficult. Enjoy.

  2. Hi All,

Travelling from the UK to Fairbanks in sept '18 for land and sea tour with ncl.

Just so we can start planning and looking at potential routes for when the airlines release their seats - any recommendations on US / Canadian airports or airlines that offer cheap / competitive flights to Fairbanks.

    Thanks in advance :)

When I was researching flights from Fairbanks the prices were not cheap. I am not flying into fairbanks, but flying out the flight times were horrible, 1:00 am I don't think so. We did find one that left at 6:15 am so we got that one, after that slim picking. Alaska air I thought was the best choice.

  3. I have asked for a table for 6 close to the window hoping for some company during dinner. We have been assigned table 555 on 1st seating on radiance of the seas. I know the dining room is a new design each sailing but there must be some areas were the numbers either remain the same or close. So with hat in mind anyone care to speculate were table 555 might be.

  4. I was on the Radiance in June in a JS. The bed was HARD (and I prefer a hard bed, but this was too hard). Unaware that they've discontinued the foam toppers, I asked the steward for a pad. He just stacked another pillow type pad on top of the other. It helped, but I ended up with a sore shoulder by the end of the cruise.

So sorry you ended up with a sore shoulder and that's what I am concerned about, getting a sore back. Thank you for your input.

  5. Britty1, I was recently on the Radiance for a very long time. I slept in three different cabins.

    1. Very hard. Asked for extra padding. Cabin steward added much padding to my bed. Much better.

    2. Very comfortable. (but it was a full suite. some have said that they got upgraded/new bedding even if the whole ship didn't)

    3. Meh. Not terrible enough to ask for extra padding. Could have been more comfortable.

Moral of the story: If your bed is not comfortable, talk to your cabin steward.

Thank you, I will try your suggestion, however still wondering WHY royal special needs would say all the ships fleet wide have double mattress toppers???

  6. The mattresses are "pillow top" now....not sure how effective they are, but the are better than the "doggy beds" (a hole in the middle) they used to have! They no longer offer the "egg crate" toppers, if that's what you are looking for.

Thank you, just want a comfy sleep, when they changed the mattresses on adventure they were truly very hard and uncomfortable.

  7. I'm going to Alaska in August and I'm wondering what type of clothing to bring? winter?

    Thanks

From everything I have read it is a layering process. I am also going in August and depending on the weather for the day we intend to start with either a t-shirt (long sleeve for really cold or short sleeve for milder weather), then add a jacket, gloves and hat if necessary. I intend to carry something to put the top clothes in if we need to shed a layer.

  8. Hello all and welcome to my review of our northbound Alaskan cruise on Radiance of the Seas. This will by my first review with pictures so it might take me a bit to get everything up, but I wanted to get this going before the next northbound cruise heads out.

A bit of background - I planned this trip back in April '16 before my wife and I tied the knot in June '16. My plan (which worked out beautifully) was that this trip was a Christmas present, an Anniversary present, and a Birthday present for my wife. I might have gone over our budget for Christmas but I think she was ok with it. :D

    Our planned itinerary:

Monday May 29th - fly into Seattle to spend a few days with the wife's friends.

Thursday June 1st - Amtrak to Vancouver

Friday the 2nd - Board the Ship

    3rd - Sea Day

    4th - Ketchikan

    5th - Icy Strait

    6th - Juneau

    7th - Skagway

    8th - Hubbard Glacier

9th - Debark in Seward / take Alaska Railroad to Anchorage

10th - Rent car and drive to Denali

11th - Shuttle bus tour of Denali

12th - Drive back to Anchorage

13th (really early) - fly home

Great review, have read all thru icy straight, looking forward to the rest of your review.

  9. I'm guessing you googled and found out it's a Christian group affiliated with John Hagee Ministries. In the off-chance that you don't have the brochure, I'm attaching what I googled. If you are interested in knowing how many people, etc you might call RC or the group organizing it can share info with you. Depends on the size of the group as to whether it would impact shows etc, but I doubt it.

Internet whiz or anyone else that has information regarding how you search for large groups on ships. We are going to Alaska on August 25th on radiance of the seas. Our roll call is the slowest I have ever been a part of, therefore suspicious of large group. If you can provide info I would appreciate it.
