  1. As our ship was in Bergen the day before Flam, we bought our tickets for the 11.05 train at Bergen railway station. When we docked at Flam there was no need to rush off and we headed up to the station about 40 minutes before departure. The inspector at the end of the platform checked our tickets and then we walked onto the platform to join a queue of about 20 other people.Just before 11.00, the barrier was opened and we were free to get on any carriage that did not have a reserved sticker.

May not sound very interesting but visit the petroleum museum. The old town is worth a walk around and you can visit the canning museum here. The ticket for the museum(MUSTPASS 100NOK) will also allow you entrance to the maritime museum and other museums. If visiting the Cathedral, go later in the afternoon as there is no charge. You could also take the local bus to the swords in the stone.

The flam railway is the main attraction here and is easy DIY

There is also the land/noddy train which will take you around flam and up the valley to the church. You can also hire bikes from the tourist info or visit the local brewery.

I like to be organised as well and try to have a plan for each port we visit. The train journey from Flam to Myrdal will take an hour. This includes a stop half way up at Kjosfossen waterfall for ten minutes where you can get off to take photos. The train will also stop at the waterfall on the way back down so if you missed getting photos the first time, you will have a second chance.Note that the weather can be very different in Myrdal. When we left Flam the weather was fine but at Myrdal there was heavy snow on the ground and it started snowing while we were there.

The Flam railway museum is also worth a visit if you want to hear the story of the Flam railway. It is situated in the building next to the railway station. The front of the building is a shop. Walk through the shop to the back to get to the museum. There is no charge for the museum.

There is also the land train which will take you around the area including the Flam church.

Are you doing an organised ship excursion or DIY? If a ship tour, the cruise line will have reserved carriages. There will be stickers on the outside of the carriages so you know which ones are reserved for the cruise line.If doing a DIY tour get to the platform about 30 -40 minutes before the departure time and when the queue starts to move get on quickly. We sat on the right hand side facing forward and managed to get a window seat with one of the windows that opens. On the return trip everyone remained in the same seats but were quite happy to let you take a photo if there was some thing of interest on that side.
