From Civitavecchia to Tarquinia

www.trenitalia.com the trains run often and it looks like a 13 minute ride.

civitaveccia train station is walkable from the port shuttle drop off. Not sure how far the Etruscan sites are from the station in Tarquinia

It is a long walk to 'old town' Tarquinia from the train station and further yet to the Etruscan sites. Far better off to take the bus from Civitavecchia to Tarquinia - drops you within 100 meters of the Museum in town. There is a bus to the sites, or you could walk (probably 30-45 minutes).

we took the bus to the walled town from the train station in tarquinia. Should have just takent the bus frim Civitavechia it drops you right at the gates. We did however take the bus back. It picks you up at the same spot. The visitor's center has printouts in english to tell you what bus goes whereand what times, which isn't as helpful as it would be if you could get it in Civitavechia. But it does help you get back. The bus on the way back was full of high school age children. Very interesting. The bus stop is not that far from the port entrance. I found a link once with instructions. I will try and find it again and I kept all the paperwork, maybe i can find that schedule. At least we can tell if it runs on sundays.

Our ship docks in Civitavecchia on Sunday and we would like to visit Tarquinia. Does anyone know if the trains or buses run on Sundays. If so which one would be best. Thanks!

the bus station is opposite the Cathedral,

on existing thro the port ,Shuttle bus drop off point ,turn right then 1 st left

on the corner is a Paper seller stall. buy your BIRG ticket here was 2.5 euros in May 2009

Cathedral is about 200 yards from the drop off point quite visible from port entrance.

bus stop in Tarquinia is tourist office, getting off & on

Just a couple of pointers here. We did this in June. The tourist office across from the pier has the bus schedules. The bus is a large blue bus clearly mared for Tarquinia. a CAUTION is that the stop is ACROSS from the cathedral, NOT in front of the cathedral. I mention this because the stop in front of the cathedral is for northbound traffic and even though Tarquinia is north, the stop is on the south side of the street, which is counterintuitive. Look for the bus shelter and wait there. The bus makes a u-turn and doesn't pick up on the other side. Also even though you can buy tickets on the bus it's much cheaper (for some odd reason) to buy them at a tobacconist. I'd recommend NOT taking the train. The train stop is a good haul from the town and the shuttle buses to town don't seem reliable. When we were there some folks said they waited for an hour and then just started walking.

The closest bus stop, which is the one the previous post refers to, is in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, which is only two tenths of a mile from where the port shuttle bus drops you off. You can easily find it on a google map and in the street view you can see the bus shelter.

You can bring up the schedule for the bus on this site (http://www.cotralspa.it/TrovaPercorso.asp).

For your departure use Piazza Vittorio, Civitavecchia and for your destination you can use the Barriera S.Giusto stop in Tarquinia, which is right in the middle of town.

To find the return schedule simply reverse the stops.

Did you experience any difficulty finding someone to sell you a ticket for the bus? My sister and BIL did this in May and encountered some difficulty finding someone who actually had bus tickets to sell. For some reason, they were also told that they couldn't buy them from the driver on the bus.

Wow. Sunday summer schedule to Tarquinia is awful!!!

I'm in Civitavecchia on Sunday August 12, and what I see on the bus schedule site is only one bus departing all morning, around 9:30 and only one bus returning toCivitavecchia at 6:30 PM.

Unfortunately, the bus schedule isn't set for tourists. I got a similar result, with the only return leaving Tarquinia at 5:45 and arriving at 6 PM. That may be a longer day than you want to spend there.

You could take the bus up and the train back; that will require getting yourself from town down to the train station (about two miles downhill). While there is a local bus that covers this route you may find similar schedule issues on a Sunday, so a taxi or walking may be your only options.

I don't see a bus schedule on the web site of the company that runs the local bus (http://www.eusepitrasporti.it/html/azienda.htm). There is one on the city of Tarquinia's web site (the third link on this page: http://www.comune.tarquinia.vt.it/pagina116_orari-mezzi-di-trasporto-pubblici.html). It looks like this company also runs buses from the train station in Civitavecchia.

Has anyone ever used the Hertz drop box in Civitavecchia as I have reserved a car with Hertz for pick up at the pier with their never lost GPS at about 100 euro for the day. Since it's a Sunday in August, they're banging me for an extra 15 euro to "open this location". I can live with that, however, there will not be anyone back at their location when I return to Civitavecchia, and will have to park the car on the street and use their drop box. Since no one will be inspecting my car upon drop off, how likely am I to be hit with phatom damage charges? Any thoughts?
