Halifax is not the best place for whale watching. You would be better off going from bar harbor is your ship goes there. Otherwise come back on a land tour and go to Digby or Freeport or Brier Island down at the southwest tip of Nova Scotia.

We also have whale watching in Cape Breton off the west coast. Generally the smaller species of whales are there.

For your day in Halifax, perhaps you could rent a car and drive along the south shore to Lunenburg. It would make for a wonderful day.

garryjollymore@eastlink.ca This person also gets great reviews. I would get a quote from all of them and then decide. http://www.nova-scotia-van-tours.com http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1209935

We just toured Halifax Sept 25 with Darrell from Halifax Taxi. There were 4 of us, he picked us up with a cadillac and we had a tour of Halifax and went to Peggy's Cove. The highlight was a fantastic, fresh, terrific lobster...cooked fresh. We opted for lobster instead of shopping..Since there were 4 of us the cost was way down, we were not fighting crowds of buses, and Darrell kept us longer than the 4 hours and showed us more things in the area. This was a four hour scheduled tour, and was $180 total for the four of us………

Also same thread: We had a great 8 hour long tour with Bruce from Bruce's Tours in Halifax. There's so much to see in this beautiful area that we got only a taste of Nova Scotia, but I'd love to go back there. Bruce was very knowledgeable, professional and pleasant. He even kept a log of all the places I'd photographed. We went to Lunenburg, Peggy's Cove, Blue Rocks, and took a beautiful drive along the coast to see Mahone Bay. I'd definitely book this tour again http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1477106

Maryann has given you lots of info, I have also posted to your other request re Tours. We took tour to Lunenburg, Mahone Bay and Chester very scenic and had a great day. Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it really is a must and the moment you can view the old bluenose which is in dry dock there.

There are also some fabulous restaurants there, if you are interested in good food reply and will give some suggestions.

Another tour we took was a Vineyard and Grand Pre, Wolfville Tour. Grand Pre has just recently been declared UNESCO site, if you are not familiar it is where the Acadians were expelled by the British and the inspiration for Longfellows poem Evangeline.

These are all do able in a day as mentioned in other post we used Halifax Cruise Ship Taxi Tours and had great tours we were very pleased.

Hope you enjoy your visit whatever you decide.

If you do go to Lunenburg, I recommend the Salt Shaker for the best Lobster rolls I have ever had.

If you are going in the fall, Mahone Bay has a scarecrow festival which is great fun.

How long are you going to be in Halifax (arrival - all aboard). There is lots to do within the city itself, though the day trips to Lunenburg or Grand Pre are both excellent suggestions.

There are lots of great shops and museums (and restaurants!!!) along the waterfront / downtown area. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic has an impressive Titanic exhibit. There are also 3 cemeteries involved with Titanic passengers. (Not sure if you or your teenagers are interested in that, but based on the crowds that descended upon our city for the 100th anniversary of her sinking, it seems that lots of people have Titanic fever.)

Murphy's on the Water offers harbour cruises.

The Citadel is an interesting and educational heritage site. The Public Gardens (not on the waterfront, but within easy walking distance of the pier) are lovely & historically significant.

Depending on the dates you're here, we also have the Tall Ships (they arrived today, here for several days) and the Buskers Festival in August.

This is a beautiful city, with lots to see and do nearby. I'm sure whatever you decide to do you'll have a wonderful time here!!!

We were fascinated by the museum right by the pier. It is the Canadian equivilent to Ellis Island. Until sometime in the '50's, all immigrants passed through here. (now they arrive mostly by plane). There is a room with archives and the girls working there are very helpful in finding your ancestors. They have access to some American information also.

Yes, we were pleasantly pleased with the Pier 21 Museum too -- great on a cold, windy day as it is right there at the beginning of the vendor shopping area. Not a NY typical museum -- one large room filled with articles (old trunks, teddybears, dolls) and lots of explanatory touch exhibits. Then the 30 minute or so film is a real memorable experience. The word Museum always turned me off -- this one is a turn on and very enjoyable for all ages and cultures. Vicki:)

We were in Halifax last week and had an amazing time! We booked a 3 hour private tour with Paul at Halifax Titanic Historical Tours and Car Service. You can look him up on Facebook - he was great! It ended up being our favorite port of call - thanks to him!

Two things I would not want to miss while in Halifax would be the Citadel (Be sure to take in the Tides of History presentation) and the Maritime museum of the Atlantic both within walking distance. A tour of the Alexander Keith's Brewery if you enjoy a beer or ale would be good as well.
