Taxi or Shore Excursion in Halifax

I am planning on seeing Lunenburg, Mahone Bay and Peggys Cove in Halifax in October. Cant decide if I should do these with Halifaxtaxitours

or do it as two separate shore excursions through the cruise ship. Taxi would be $70 more but would be willing to pay more if the taxi experience is better. What do yall think?

You will see more on a totally private basis. You will have more time in each location which is quite important on this somewhat ambitious but doable day. $70 premium over 2 or more people will be well worth it.

A taxi tour will be way better than the ship's bus tour. Renting a car would be even less expensive and give you more flexibility. You would have to do your homework though.

Instead of taking an excursion with the cruise line, we hired a cab from outside the pier. We were so lucky to have hired Peter with Casino Taxi (1-902-877-7627). There is a government-mandated flat rate for cabs taking tourists to Peggy's Cove. He not only drove us to Peggy's Cove, but gave us a narrated tour to several sites along the way: the "de Garthe's Fisherman's Monument", the Citadel, the Titanic Cemetery and Fairview Lawn, the SwissAir 111 Memorial, to name a few sites. How long would it take via rental car to do the Evangiline Trail from Halifax?

We just toured Halifax Sept 25 with Darrell from Halifax Taxi. There were 4 of us, he picked us up with a cadillac and we had a tour of Halifax and went to Peggy's Cove. The highlight was a fantastic, fresh, terrific lobster...cooked fresh. We opted for lobster instead of shopping..Since there were 4 of us the cost was way down, we were not fighting crowds of buses, and Darrell kept us longer than the 4 hours and showed us more things in the area. This was a four hour scheduled tour, and was $180 total for the four of us.:)

We rented a car from National Car Rental, which is located in train station just across the street from where Princess Docks. We drove out to Peggy's Cove for the day and on the way back into town stopped at Fairview Cemetery to see the Titanic graves.

The drive to Peggy’s Cove was very easy, as was the drive to the cemetery and back to the ship. It was a very nice day.

We had a great 8 hour long tour with Bruce from Bruce's Tours in Halifax. There's so much to see in this beautiful area that we got only a taste of Nova Scotia, but I'd love to go back there. Bruce was very knowledgeable, professional and pleasant. He even kept a log of all the places I'd photographed. We went to Lunenburg, Peggy's Cove, Blue Rocks, and took a beautiful drive along the coast to see Mahone Bay. I'd definitely book this tour again

We were in Halifax two weeks ago on Caribbean Princess. We had the good fortune to rent a car from Avis in Halifax. We took a cab from the cruise terminal to Avis. I had my Garmin with me and just plugged in Peggy's Cove. It was a very easy ride on the scenic route. However, when we got to Peggy's Cove there was chaos as there were 5 cruise ships in port that day and there were so many busses at Peggy's Cove it was like ants on an anthill. We were lucky we had our own car so we didn't even get out. We drove south along the scenic "Lighthouse Route" along the coast and went to Lundenberg. Had a nice lunch and got to see the Bluenose Schooner restoration and Fisherman's Museum. Had a great day away from the crowds.

I would recommend Avis. They were great. I asked where we could get a taxi to the ship and the Avis guy said 'hop in the car I'll take you back".

My husband always likes to do it himself and for Halifax this is not difficult. However, if you can afford it and get a good driver, the taxi would be great. You can relax and enjoy the scenery and talk to and learn from the driver.

How long would it take via rental car to do the Evangiline Trail from Halifax?

We've done a number of tours of the Maritimes. A few years ago we drove the Evangeline Trail from Halifax to Yarmouth to take the ferry to Maine, which is no longer running. The start of the interesting stuff is Digby, which is about three hours. Seeing the Acadian fishing villages is another three. Probably too much for a port stop. If it's your first time there, Peggy's Cove and maybe Lunenburg or Halifax itself should be enough to be interesting.
