Airline Charge for Oversized Luggage

We are flying Northwest Airlines from US to Europe and we wondering if anyone has experienced being charged because the overall measurementi is 63 inches instead of the required 62 inches. We have only had the airlines weigh but never measure our suitcases. Thanks

We have found that paying a fee for an extra bag is usually less than checking an oversized bag. Whether they measure or not will depend on who is working that day, and how strict they are told to be. What can happen on a flight today may be totally different than a flight tomorrow or next week.

If it were me, I wouldn't take the chance and use a bag that measures within the limits. Good Luck though!

Since this is not a Princess related question try the Cruise Air section, you will probably get more answers.

We did have Southwest measure one of our bags but it made it by 1/2 inch. The one thing you may want to consider is if you will be taking any domestic European flights because their baggage rules are much more strict than the U.S.

When are you flying? By January 2010, NWA will cease to exist. By then, they will have completed the merger with Delta and will be on a single FAA operating certificate. After that, the DAL rules and policies will apply, but I suspect they are similar to Northwest's. Otherwise, I agree that it mostly depends on who checks you in, how busy they are and what kind of a mood they're in...

Here is the link to the NWA's baggage guidelines. Delta is using the same guidelines currently.
