SMOKERS - Freedom of the Seas policy change?

Not much sympathy from me, sorry I'm allergic, severely! I was on Freedom in May and the WORST was getting ice cream by the pool right next to all the smokers!

I'm very interested to see how this policy pans out over the rest of the fleet.

A couple interesting notes to consider: 1. Obesity causes more health problems than smoking. 2. Smoke is an irritant, not an allergen.

and smokers are 50% more likely to be obese than non smokers as non smokers are more likely to live healthier and more active lifestyles

I loved RCI for many years. I thought I would never cruise with them, but my parish is doing a group cruise - so I am going with them. I did not book a balcony because of the smoke issue. I am NOT the only person with heath issues. RCI sells itself as a line that wants you bring your kids. I am not a smoker but both of my parents were. My younger sister is already dead from cancer. It is too late for me but the children of smokers should have the right not to have the health problems my sister and I have.
Any child who lives in, or near, a big city is probably getting less exposure to carcinogens on a ship in the open ocean with some smokers around than they are at home with no smokers around.

I think banning smoking in the casino on formal days/nights is a great idea. The smokers, while inconvenienced.....survived. Little by little smoking should be banned from various areas of the ship......on the Freedom, the entire 4th deck by the casino reeked of smoke all the time :(

I would lose (I mean spend) alot more money in the casino if it were non smoking. I quit smoking in 2002, and never realized how offensive the smell is until I quit. I was recently on the Monarch and couldn't stand to be in the casino more than 5 minutes. So, until they ban smoking in the casino, I won't be spending/losing my money in there. (too bad for RCI, I'm not a very good or lucky gambler)

We were on Freedom in August and it was so great to be able to enjoy the pool deck without the smell of cigarette smoke. I was not happy that it is still allowed on Deck 12 with the joggin/walking track and those who choose to walk/jog have to be sunbected to the smell of smoke. Myabe I am overly sensitive to the smell, but I can smell smoke from balconies quite far from ours as well as neighbors backyards that must be 300 yards away. I love the fact that the casino is smoke free on formal nights and wish they had 2 sections that are divided by glass walls and doors for smokers and non smokers. The smoking section could be larger as people seem to think that smokers gamble more. That way each of us could enjoy the casino without problems. Just my 2 cents. I grew up with parents who smoked a lot and they died earlier deaths due to health problems that were caused by the smoking. I realize it is your right to smoke, but it is also my right to not be subjected to having to smell your smoke.

I love the posts about the casino being "smoke free" on formal nights.

Non-smoking pax always complain about the smoke smell not being out of cabins and yet they don't seem to smell it in the casino when it is non-smoking night.

With all the smoking going on in that casino one would think the smoke smell would remain and yet non-smokers claim they go in and enjoy the "smoke free" casino.:p

Go figure.

I enjoy not being smoked on in the casino on formal nights when it is non-smoking. The casino still reeks of smoke, but at least I am not inhaling it from the person at the slot machine next to me

I think that we who smoke fully know the dangers that can be brought upon. I am constantly sick and tired of all the crap laid down on these boards on those who do smoke, cancer, it will kill, blah, blah, blah. Geez, it's my choice, period. I booked a balcony for this purpose as I'm limited to smoking elsewhere on the ship. So, to those who don't like it, to bad. I'm just so tired of all the negativity generated on this topic that it has now made me more determined than ever to be on my balcony even more.

I find it interesting that you would have "babies" in your c.c. name and then try to pretend it isn't bad, or if it is bad, it is your choice to smoke.

You are probably addicted to cigarettes and can't quit. It must be very difficult to. My father smoked every kind of non filtered brand when he was younger. Paul Mall, Lucky Strike, Chesterfield, Phillip Morris, etc.

In 1980 he had the lower lobe of his left lung removed. He continued to smoke. In 2001 he had the lower lobe of his right lung removed. He continued to smoke. He finally quit in 2003, but cancer returned in 2006, and he died in 2007.

Every other week I take my wife to the Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa Florida for chemotherapy for her recurrent cancer. While in there I am amazed at the number of people being treated for lung, throat, mouth cancer, etc. from smoking.

You sound selfish in your post, and that is fine. I am guessing you don't have anyone special in your life that you care about. Maybe I am wrong and you do. Hopefully I am wrong. If I am, try this. Think about the most special person in your life, and imagine your life without them. Imagine seeing them endure a long and painful death.

I remember how my Grandmother's death devastated my Grandfather for 15 years before he passed away. I see the pain my Mother endures, every day remembering and missing my father. We were both at his side when he died. We watched as he gasped for every last breath.

Why would you want to put anyone you cared about through similar events. You may be able to hide behind a computer screen and pretend, but next time, look in the mirror. You can't lie to yourself.

Maybe visit a cancer treatment center, and watch the caregivers, not the patients. Or go to an American Cancer Society Relay for Life event and see the survivors or loved ones of those lost.

I probably don't know you, and wouldn't be effected by anything you do. But someone might.

Second hand smoke IS bad. Second hand death is even worse.

I just went to the CC article on the smoking policy of all cruise lines. Not only does Celebrity not allow smoking in balconies-they do not allow smoking in the casino.

I am trying to see all points being a new non-smoker. Robyn has stated many times in her posts that now that she is also a non-smoker how you really get to see the other side as now I truly notice the smell of smoke too. Right now it is just idle ribbing to my husband and can smell him having one outside while I'm in the house. I get it and understand how non smokers feel.

I also have to look at it from a smokers point of view and smoke where we can. Being this a RCCL forum-we are speaking of this line. Not one smoker is breaking any rule.

Often many posters throw out the phrase 'don't sail RCCL then'. Sometimes this is said in a way that holds a malice tone and it's really hard to engauge in any descent debate.

Sometimes I look down at sigs of posters who really come at smokers and the whole health thing and I really wonder why Celebrity is not appealing to you now. I understand-some don't like it but still want to sail on RCCL. I get it that those-although not liking the smoke will deal with the smell. Others-are so vocal about personal health issues but have many up and coming sailings on royal.

I do believe Royal has heard the smokers complaints and are offering them ships with exactly what they want. For some of you-why not take advantage of this?? Seems they have answered the call! I personally-will look forward to trying Celebrity once my husband is completely smoke free.

Alcohol is also legal....but you can not drink and drive because you might harm someone else.

The continuous restrictions being placed on cruise lines (not just RCCL but other cruise lines and other areas on land) are the same thing.

Yes, it is legal to smoke and to drink.

No, you do not have the right to harm another human being.

The only people who should be inconvenienced are those that have the addiction. Just like only alcoholics are inconvenienced because they can not drink and drink.

Someone else's addiction to drugs should not affect anyone else. No one has that "right".

OMG! Are you for real! I won't give much of a reply to your insensitive remarks, but I will say this, what I do and where I do it is my own personal business and none of yours. I don't care about your sob story, blah, blah, blah, I read enough on these boards. I have a fabulous life which I intend to fully enjoy to my last breath.

I have read this entire thread as I usually do with smoking threads and as usual, even though I always tell myself to stay out, I can't. So, my opinion is coming from a former smoker who quit 20 years ago when I decided I wanted to see my kids graduate high school. I live in a state where it is illegal to smoke in public places and I voted for it and I love it and finally by the time we leave on our next cruise, cancer will have taken my mother in law who was given 6 months in January but still battles on. My comment is simply this, people who smoke on their balconies are following the rules that are in place and should be left alone. If you have a problem with smoking go to RCCL and try to get them to ban it but if they haven't, smokers have the right to smoke on their balconies and no matter how we feel about the evils of smoking they should be left alone to do so.

Sorry for your mother in law and to anyone else who has suffered or is suffering, cancer is an evil disease. However, you are right, people are within the rules if smoking on their balcony, in the casino when allowed etc , if some people are so against it or have allergies, why dont they cruise with a no smoking line or a line with strict restrictions, its no good going on RCI and then complaining if someone is smoking on the balcony or next to you in the casino, you know its allowed when booking the cruise.

I have been on ships where smoking was not allowed at the pool bar nor in the pool area. Pax walked right up to the pool bar with cigs and stood there till they finished them. Pax had ashtrays in the pool area right along side their lounges and smoked ! No one said a word to them.

I am also an avid Casino player. I can tell you on formal nights when Smoking is Not allowed, the Casino is not full at all! It usually closes before midnight, not like Smoking nights where it is Full and closes past 1:30am. I will say in the casino on the non smoking night, Pax were told if they lit up, that is was non smoking...and Out they went..not only the cig but the gambler left too!

As far as people complaining about smoking on Balcony's, as long as RC's policy has this area for smoking...you have nothing to complain about! I always book a balcony and spend very little time on it! I couldn't tell you what goes on next door to my balcony and I could care less!

Hope everyone can enjoy their cruise's, and finds a place that meets their needs!:)

I have heard this many times before about the casinos being empty on non smoking formal nights and on all the cruises we have been on, it is simply NOT TRUE.
