Tipping & The Supper Club

Almost Packed

Question please;

How is tipping handled in the Supper Club? What is an average amount of a tip for great/excellent service rec'd while dining here for a couple? Do they receive my tips from the MDR? How is it worked out?

I'm considering reserving a night, but I can't exactly figure on a percentage rate of $30pp...(that is the price now correct?)

any info is appreciated.

Thanks.

It's because the employees are so smiley, which invokes feelings of guilt if we don't dip into our wallets again. They're gooood......

I find the tipping in the supper club very strange.

Part of your $ 30 is the tip but they will not tell you how much.

They encourage you to tip extra if you want but since you do not know what the server is already getting kind of hard to know what to do.

Most people including myself add something to the bill as an extra tip but the more I think about it not sure if we will do so next time.

However the meal and the service are both excellent.

Lately if we like our tablemates in the MDR we have not been going to the supper club as we are fine with what we get and the service we receive in the MDR and you are already paying for the tip of that waiter.

Kind of double tipping by going to the supper club.

We certainly didn't feel "obligated" to tip extra. We were happy to leave an additional gratuity as we received exceptional, impeccable, personalized service. The ambiance was elegant. The food spectatular. It was more than worth the $80.00 we spent that night. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

We have eaten in the Specialty restaurants 4 times now, and have always felt the service to be exceptional and also part of the "entire" dining experience that evening. We know the tip is included in the $30 charge...and we are not privileged to know the allotted amount given, and or divided by all the staff who serve us throughout the evening. We feel regardless of the amount they are given, if you look at the quality and amount of food, the ambience, the service ( of course ) then you understand that for $30 you are getting one heck of an affordable dinner and an additional $10 or $20 tip is easily justifiable and .....in my opinion a

"class act" thing to do!

Actually, it's a $30 upgrade, tip included, for the meal you've already paid for in the MDR, and are tipping on that as well, on an uneaten meal.

Respectfully....does that mean if I forgo eating in the FDR and order room service and eat in my cabin, I should therefore not consider tipping the person who delivered my supper?

It is not about unnecessary spending, but rather a kind gesture.

To each his own in the monies department!:D

Mr. Pete....I am wondering if you have any idea what portion of the $30 is the tip? I know you said the $2 per day per person in the FDR. Would Carnival every divulge such information....(interesting)

I do not. Some tried to get the info out of John Heald, unsuccessfully.

No offense to anyone but I've always been a bit confused with these constant questions about tipping in the Supper Clubs. Yes, I understand the meal is paid for in the MDR and I am paying $30 extra to eat in the Supper Club. But, and this is just a personal observation, so what?

I go out every week and spend money to buy food for my house to make dinners for the week. If DH and I decide to go out and eat one night, I'm not stressing about the food in my fridge that was already paid for and not getting eaten.

Also, what does it matter how much of the $30 is going to the auto tips? DH and I can easily spend $50 on a casual Friday night at a local pub here at home. Why would an extra $10 for a tip in the Supper Club be such a worry.

Again, this is just my personal observation. All together between the cabin, auto tips, excursions, booze, casino...we'll probably spend close to $3000.00 on this trip. I don't see how an extra $10 tip in the Supper Club needs so much hand wringing. If you get great service, tip...if you don't, don't. I don't see why it's such a concern.

Do you leave a tip on your kitchen counter before you go out then tip again at the restaurant:confused::p

Maybe that is why they include tips in the price of the supper club....because you are already paying for a tip elsewhere.......

No, obviously, I am not leaving a tip on the kitchen counter. But who cares? On your room rate you're tipping your cabin steward, bartenders, waiters, etc. I can't believe these people are getting all that much. So if you want to tip more, just do it. Why all the second guessing???

A normal tip at a restaurant back home is about 20%. On the $30 supper club fee for 2 IF we choose to tip extra that's only $12! If I can't afford $12 to be kind to a wonderful waiter I can't afford to cruise in the first place.

DH and I are doing anytime dining this time and we fully expect to have different waiters each night. I am sure there is some rule/understanding about tips for this situation. I couldn't care less what it is. I intend to treat each night like a night out at a restaurant at home and a tip to an outstanding waiter is part of that. If the service is acceptable, the auto tip will suffice. If the service is what I feel is over and above, I'll tip extra. Same goes for my room steward and my bartender.

Again, not a judgement on what other people do. It's just me.

I believe the main component of the arguement is that the waitstaff may not be getting paid an equal tip level as the waitstaff in the main dining rooms, but not sure.

I know from postings on the boards and other references that the waitstaff really does count on the tips as a major part of their salary and, while I certainly do believe that the "auto-tipping" is a great thing, I will definitely tip additional monies to the room steward, waitstaff and others as the trip proceeds.

However, it would be nice to know how much of the $30 goes towards the tip. If it were $10 out of $30, I wouldn't worry about leaving an extra tip and if it were $2 out of $30 I most certainly would.

Leaving a $10 tip is what I'm currently planning on, providing the service is everything the posting make it to be currently.

Like me, you're planning to leave a $10 tip so what does it matter how much of the $30 is an auto tip? Since no one will tell what the percentage is, just assume it's insufficient and give the $10 we were planning to give in the first place. Again, I don't see the need for all the second guessing.

It just seems to me that some people nickle and dime in the oddest places. They'll drop hundreds on excursions, in the casino, on booze but go on endless debate about a $10 tip. I just don't get it.

I have cruised for decades. Long before there was a specialty or 'alternative' dining venue! At the beginning of alternative restaurant choices, it was made QUITE clear the the charge WAS the tip. Nothing extra for the food, all of it was TIP. NEVER since, has ANY line made it clear that that was no longer the case. I find Carnival's now "steakhouse" very good and the service as expected, VERY good. An extra tip good? Not so far. Since I could be in the main dining room, where I already have an included meal, and I COULD be having a dozen or more lobster tails for no extra charge, I look at the entire $30.pp as the TIP!
