I honestly believe that most insults are for entertainment purposes only.I have never witnessed this on a cruise

:cj

Insults for entertainment purposes, kinda scary:eek:

Unfortunately I have met some on these posters on cruises and especially land resorts. When you people watch you see and hear it. They are very real, but gladly as with anything CC, only a small percentage. The true entertainment is, they have fun making themselves feel big and better by putting other down. I have read stuff on this thread at 45 years old had no idea could be said by people not defending a sick child or a devoted spouse. Internet and anonymity can shed light on ones dark side (no pun intended)

I am going to flog this horse a little more.

First, I think the poll is a little flawed. There's no distinction given

between designer jeans (nice jeans) and work-style denim jeans (not-as-nice).

Now my Father had a few sayings and I'm feeling very old to repeat them:

1. You only get one chance to make a first impression.

2. Clothes make the man.

3. Better to dress up than dress down.

4. If you want respect, command respect.

5. Cleanliness is next to Godliness.

6. Don't forget your manners

Boy I really feel old now, but it's all simple basic advice.

When you walk into that dining room, do you look like someone

who respects the sensibilities of other people, or do you try to push the

envelope in any manner (personal hygiene, appropriate dress, pleasant

manner).

Like it or not, most people do make initial judgements based on this.

What do I hope to acheive by following these rules?

1. I allow everyone at my table to be comfortable with my presence.

2. I command respect from the dining staff because I am making myself worthy of their best efforts to serve me. My effort shows I am not

belittling their role as service attendants.

3. I set myself in a favorable frame of mind which says " this is special

to me and I am going to treat it as such".

This is just good human psychology.

With that in mind, I say designer jeans, slacks in clean, unripped, well fitting condition Yes shorts at night No, personal hygiene Yes, good

behavior Yes.

This is an obvious generational difference however.

I have said my piece, and am now donning my flame suit.

I thought we had resolved that many posts ago. It's not a generational difference. All ages think that jeans are appropriate and all ages disagree.

Is it a designer flame suit? Sure hope so. I'd hate you to be underdressed.

I figured it was time for a country song in this thread, Thank you Keith Anderson

Designer names

Rips and stains

Shouldn't tell you who I am

Cause sometimes angels hid their wings

An' the Devil's dressed like a lamb

Yeah, The Clothes Don't Make The Man

They all laughed an called him names when he said that he was sent to be their king

You don't even own a home

You've got simple clothes an' sandals on your feet

Stripped of his pride

He was crucified

On a cross with nails of haterd in his hands

But he rose from the grave in 3 days

Yeah, The Clothes Don't Make The Man

You can wear your jeans to the chapel, I'll wear my suit to dinner humming this ZZ TOP classic.....

Clean shirt, new shoes

And I dont know where I am goin to.

Silk suit, black tie,

I dont need a reason why.

They come runnin just as fast as they can

Coz every girl crazy bout a sharp dressed man.

Gold watch, diamond ring,

I aint missin a single thing.

And cufflinks, stick pin,

When I step out Im gonna do you in.

They come runnin just as fast as they can

Coz every girl crazy bout a sharp dressed man.

Top coat, top hat,

I dont worry coz my wallets fat.

Black shades, white gloves,

Lookin sharp and lookin for love.

They come runnin just as fast as they can

Coz every girl grazy bout a sharp dressed man.

Good song but the thread still needed a country song since it had everything else.

Wonder why that is...

Could it be that you might burn things...or

They don't want all those ta-ta's sitting at the table with everyone...? or

Or it may be hazerdous for the waiters in the dining room as they may get distracted and drop a tray, or trip on ...things... or

Just purely a hygiene factor...?

none of that. In civilized society, people dress for dinner. It used to mean a bit more effort and elegance, but now is basically "put something on".

Great point, Chef. Especially for women, hate to be caught in a skirt or dress in that predicament, lol!

Colleen

The one downside to wearing jeans when being rescued from an elevator is that you are less likely to profit by it. You will never get a free piece of fruit dressed like that.

I live in a civilized society. I will go home from work, take off my suit, put on my shorts and t shirt and sit and have dinner. We did use to "dress" for dinner but that was back before Ward Cleaver died in 1982. The Beaver was so upset he hasn't worn a suit since.

That is fine; when you are at home. I wonder if the Cleavers would have had tuxes every night if they were in the MDR on a cruise ship? Well, probably not June.

If by "they" you mean Ward, Wally, and the Beav you bet they would have been in tuxes and June would have been in a gown but that was the 50's, and 60's. Today the Beav would have a t shirt on that said "NO I'm not dead and I was never in Vietnam with some camo shorts and flip flops.

Wow, I do agree with you bottom line but your fathers requirements sound like you're going on a job interview and not relaxing vacation. If I had to put that much thought into it I'd just stay home.

Simple guidelines, not requiremnts just good sense, not much thought required here. Raised that way, hard to change now, don't find it restrictive. Never hurts to make a good impression.:)

Playing a little unfair here. I guess you are invoking His holy name on

a forlorn sinner. And that is inappropriate. And somehow you are judging me.

I did not say I judge the quality of the inner person because of what they wear. I am saying that often the way a person presents himself

is a reflection of how they view themselves and wants to be perceived.

I think the fashion business would be out of luck if this were not the case.

On this level, clothes do make the man. And whether you like it or not,

perception often becomes reality.

I choose to present myself in the most positive and inoffensive manner

that I can. You can do that on vacation, it isn that hard.

Guess we'll agree to disagree - some may require jacket but I cannot think of any that would require a suit and tie!! As I've said, not only do I live here but actually worked in the industry and my boyfriend still does at a very high level and in some of the most 'ritzy' and that has never been required in any of them.

I also live in the Greater NYC area. Lots of times if you don't have a

jacket they will loan you one for dinner.

I was just wondering, being that you have experience in the fine dining

industry, does the attire of patrons ever alter where in the dining room

they are seated or what service they get? In other words, how is the room "managed"? Doesn't perception matter?

I would like to see if a parallel can be made to the jeans-shorts discussion.

Also, doesn't the staff have to maintain a certain appearance for the

perceived ambiance and service of the establishment? Of course they

could just wear jeans or shorts too!

I respect and welcome your opinion on this.
