Both times we took the Dawn out of NYC, the parking was easy. We did arrive on the early side, but had no problems getting in or out.

The one time we took Carnival, we were with a group on a tour bus. Getting in was not a problem. Getting out was a nightmare. But customs delayed us two hours, and by the time we got off the ship, everyone was arriving for the next cruise. Plus another ship had arrived and was disembarking as well. It took us another two hours to get out of the port after we got off the ship.

Our last cruise was on the Dawn....but it was on a weekend in February...less traffic I guess. No problem parking. We also got to the pier at 10:30 which helped...but as someone mentioned most of the time they are letting the previous passengers off...so it depends.

Just saw how much the parking went up....ugh!

So before we even get on the ship we are forking out $1000. 10 day cruise = $300 for parking, $500 for dog sitter ( 50 per day to stay in our house ), Then about $200 or more for "night before" hotel stay. Yikes!!! LOL

Not sure if I should laugh or cry. Oh well, such is life! ;)

Sailed out of NYC twice on the Dawn in Dec. First time, no problem arriving and parking, leaving was a little crazy, took me 45 minutes to get from parking level back to pick up DH. Second time, no problem either way, but had DH and luggage all go to the car w/me. I understand they have changed the levels for pickup and drop off too, which should help. I'm jealous, I want to go......have to wait til Feb 2010 and go from Miami;)

It CAN get hairy if you get there at peak time. We shoot for 10:30/11:00, and have never had a problem.

Howver, the configuration is currently different. You no longer park AFTER you drop off your bags without going all the way around again. So PROCEED directly to parking, and you will now find porters up there to help you. Else, you can take them yourself down the elevator to level 2.

You are not allowed to use the escalators with luggage.

ugh...I forgot about that.....so for 2 people 10 days = $240... but that's at the end of the cruise added to the "on board" expenses and I know that bill will probably reach close to $1000 with the service charge included. So....there's $2000 spent besides the "cruise fare" and then there's my casino money of course. LOL :D

When you add it all up for those who have to hire sitters either for kids or pets....vacations can be pretty expensive. :(

I'm afraid to ask but what is the parking now per night? We parked in 06 and paid $180 for 8 nights. How much has it gone up? We decided to take a car service last year and ended up paying just under $150 because he had to wait long for us to get iff the ship.

It is now....$30 per day. Not sure why the price jumped up so much but may have something to do with paying for all that "construction" that has been going on forever, or just a "cost of living" increase that is much higher then we get in our pay checks, that's for sure. ;)

They have improved the parking system in NY.

Our Dawn cruise in June was different than last year.

This past June you could drive right up to the parking deck and drop your luggage there.

We did not know that at the time and waited down below trying to find a porter. All because that was what we had experienced previously.

I would advise that you check roll call boards for recent cruises to see if the upper deck luggage drop is in effect.

FYI, we arrived at 10:40 and went right through the lines to the "holding area" and boarding was fairly early. Sorry, I don't recall exactly what time.

nah its part of the Mayors we hate cars and he controls the EDC that sets the rates. I filed a complaint against them and a ticket was issued(they failed to follow the NY City's rules for garage price increases.)

Hmm...so how long ago did you do that ...and what became of it? Any hope in getting these parking charges lowered???

The New York Port Authority is pricing themselves right out of the business. We've talked to folks who look elsewhere for a cruise first before having to shell out $30 a day just to park. The Brooklyn pier only averages $19 a day (not sure about Bayonne). If you don't mind flying, you may as well save hundreds by flying to Florida when you compare cruise price savings and add in the insane parking fees. IMHO

We just returned from a Carnival Cruise on 9/26 and had absolutely no problems getting into or out of the parking garage. Admittedly we arrived pretty early (before 9:00 AM) and the lot wasn't even open yet, but they directed us to a lot to wait in and at 9:00 AM we drove over to the other lot. No traffic at all. Got a quick once over from the drug doggie and parked really close to the entrance. The porters weren't even there yet, so we took our own bags into the terminal.

When we came back, we did the self assist debark and were in our car and out of the parking area in less than 10 minutes. No traffic at all. I'm sure when things are more crowded later it could be a nightmare, but that's why we came early and left early.

It's still $30.00 a day and we paid cash, but they do take credit cards.

both the Brooklyn pier and the Manhattan pier are run by the same people. They in fact are not the NY Port Authority. Its the New York Economic Development Commission(NY EDC an entity of the City of New York). Driving into Manhattan is being discouraged for any reason. The actual running of the pier is leased to P&0 USA.

Bayonne is run by some entity in Bayonne again not the Port Authority.

That's not accurate. The Brookly terminal is managed by NYCEDC and the PA. From the port's official Web site: http://www.nycruise.com/

The Brooklyn Cruise Terminal is managed jointly by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey (PANYNJ).

The Manhattan Cruise Terminal is managed by Ports America, a private terminal management company under contract with the City’s representative agency.

Ports America is the successor to P&O. When P &O sold itself to Saudi Arabia, the US Congress raised a stink and P&O spun this out as Ports America(actually I think it initially called itself P&O America) so ports America makes sense. The Pier in Brooklyn is technically leased by the City to Port Authority but NY City Operates it. I did make a mistake in that The NYCEDC is not a commission but a corporation...but it is still the same entity that is responsible for who runs both the piers. I wouldn't believe everything I read on the website. They bought another pier in Brooklyn so that they can open three piers in Brooklyn too but that won't happen for a long time(we should live so long).....
