old grump Posted September 29, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 29, 2009 Our TA just gave us a choice of a additional $300 shipboard credit or a " special onshore event" tba. I thought the $200 obc we were already given would do my DW hair twice and let me break even. So two questions, what other than casino(cash only)and excur:confused:sions(already selected), can you spend credits on, and does anyone have any idea what the special onshore event might be? :)
Rare mariners Posted September 30, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 30, 2009 Check with your agent to see which category the shipboard credit falls under as it might be a "gift" rather than a credit that must be spent only on certain allowable expenses. If you have to spend it you could plan on one or both of you using additional spa services such as manicure/pedicure; massage. You could purchase upgraded wine, champagne and/or caviar. I'm not sure about the special onshore event and hopefully someone else will add information.
Wendy The Wanderer Posted September 30, 2009 #3 Share Posted September 30, 2009 Drycleaning, pressing and laundry! Expensive champagne! Newspapers delivered to your door! Seriously, I'm using most of our credits next time for the spa, but David gets a daily newspaper as his perk, since he refuses to have a massage or a manicure. jhp Posted September 30, 2009 #4 Share Posted September 30, 2009 Spa, spa is my vote, since probably few of us allow this self-indulgent luxury when we are home! Otherwise, anything your really need onboard from the boutique?
Travelcat2 Posted September 30, 2009 #5 Share Posted September 30, 2009 If your TA is associated with the Virtuoso consortium, they do nice "shore events" (aka excursions). However, I'd rather havae the money (or OBC) to use as I wish!
jhp Posted September 30, 2009 #6 Share Posted September 30, 2009 oldgrump, do you have to pay for your shore excursions on your cruise?
old grump Posted September 30, 2009 Author #7 Share Posted September 30, 2009 It's the dec o4 rio-fll, and we only selected one for fee excursion, which we have already paid for. Not sure I want to try to handle asking for repay on my credit card and then charge to obc. I may tell dw to get to be a big spender at the spa and buy a windbreaker or something. For Wendy, yes it was through the named travel network:)
old grump Posted September 30, 2009 Author #8 Share Posted September 30, 2009 ;)OOPS! Sorry Travelcat; it was the travel group you referenced, I was reading your post and still thinking about the daily newspaper Wendy mentioned. One of my absolute daily must have fixes, now I won't have to go to the library and look for the two day olds! Now how much does the daily paper cost? Dw may have to pay for her own hair fix:)
neviboy Posted September 30, 2009 #9 Share Posted September 30, 2009 If you are a "gold" member of 7 seas society, the e-mail papers are free. We usually get USA today. The excursions we have booked are of the 'highlight' variety since Hannah cannot walk long distances. The photo tour of Barbados is excellent. We did it on our own a couple of years ago. A previous cruise was joined in Fortaleza for the return home. We stayed there for 2 days, and so we are taking the folkloric excursion. I just read two opinions of the recent Voyager cruise. Added proof that tastes are so divergent. So with 2 months to go we are starting to count the days and really looking forward to our first two week cruise. Wendy The Wanderer Posted September 30, 2009 #10 Share Posted September 30, 2009 We're not Gold. Just 2 days short. The newspapers vary, I guess you can only see the list on the butler request form, so not sure how you order them (or if you can), if you're not in a butlered suite. Sorry I hope you didn't get your hopes up. Here's the list: USA Today (M-F) The Wall Street Journal (M-F) The Los Angeles Times (M-Sa) The Miami Herald (M-Sa) The Daily Mirror (UK, M-Sa) The Times (UK, M-F) The Sydney Morning Herald (M-S) The National Post (Canada, M-S) Le Monde (France, Excl. Mon) El Nuevo Herald (USA/Spa M-S) Not a great list, but we've picked the LA Times. The one Canadian newspaper is the worst. Ask you TA, she should know if you can pre-order. Oh, and I think they cost $4.95 a day each or something like that.
xrvlcruiser Posted September 30, 2009 #11 Share Posted September 30, 2009 If you look in the paper, ther is a list of the papers the company supplies. Regent will provide any of them as well - not just the ones on the "shortlist".
tombo Posted September 30, 2009 #12 Share Posted September 30, 2009 If you have a Kindle (electronic reading device from Amazon) you can subscribe for daily delivery of almost any major newspaper. The wireless delivery is not available outside the U.S., but you can download each day's paper to your computer and then upload it to your Kindle via the USB cable. Actually, you don't even need to have a Kindle if you're willing to read the daily paper on your laptop. And you only need to be "Silver" to get the free internet access. xrvlcruiser Posted September 30, 2009 #14 Share Posted September 30, 2009 If you look at the newspapers avaialble on the ship (I think you mentioned USAToday), somewhere in the paper - I think on the back page - is a very long list of papers the company has available. Many US papers, some Canadian and European as well. If you ask at Reception or ask your Butler, those papers should be avaialble as well as the few on the "short list". Hope this is clearer. Wendy The Wanderer Posted September 30, 2009 #15 Share Posted September 30, 2009 Hmm, but you can't order these in advance, as I've done with the LATimes. That's a pain--probably we'd choose the Globe and Mail if it was available. I wonder if we can change our minds once we board?
xrvlcruiser Posted September 30, 2009 #16 Share Posted September 30, 2009 I don't know about ordering specific papers ahead of time. Ask your TA, I'm she'll know. We've always done it on board.
old grump Posted September 30, 2009 Author #17 Share Posted September 30, 2009 Wendy, we are in 765 about half the ship aft of you, but still a butler suite. I will most likely stick with USA today, since i'm petty sure the local south arkansas paper won't be available:). I will lug a laptop for that and email. Donaldm Posted October 1, 2009 #18 Share Posted October 1, 2009 There are hundreds of newspapers from which to choose; ask at the reception desk. I chose the NY Times the day I boarded and all 50-70 pages of it were there starting the next day (note that most papers are not delivered on Sundays). I believe the cost is $6 per day unless you are gold or above. That is a very nice perk of being gold.
Wendy The Wanderer Posted October 1, 2009 #19 Share Posted October 1, 2009 So I don't understand why the NY Times would not be listed on the online butler form! This certainly would be wwaayy better than the LA Times. I'm thinking I should cancel the LA Times order and just wait until we board.
