Not trying to hijack your thread, but what is the purpose of the ship's godmother.

I'm new to cuising and have seen godmothers mentioned a few time but can't figure out the point of them.

No point whatever, it's a meaningless PR item.

Whatsa matta you? You never seen da "Godfather" movie ?. "Godmother"

gets a cut of the casino take plus a copy of all the best pasta recipes

the chefs have. :D:D:D:D:D

( Don't Flame me, I'm Italian )

Now the real story:

It was the tradition to name ships with female names. The ship would

be launched in a ceremony in which a female dignatary would smash a bottle of bubbly across the ship bow and then the ship would be

christened and be launched. Many times it would be the person who the ship was named after but was often hard when the person was already dead. Without this ceremony the ship would be cursed.

This ceremony is similar to the Christian ceremony of baptism for

new borns in which there is always a Godfather and Godmother named who are responsible for looking after the spiritual welfare of the child after the parents. This is a very important role especially in Italian families.

Believe it or not (I feel old now) the New York papers used to have a daily column of ship arrivals and departures, and who was on the ships was big society news. Who didn't know that the Duke and Duchess of Windsor

would ONLY travel on the S.S. United States ! And who hasn't seen the

show "Anything Goes" by Cole Porter. The whole show is based on who's

who in ship travel.

So yeah naming a ship Godmother is PR but back then it was BIG PR.

And who said it's only ceremonial? Who would want to sail on a cursed ship -not me.

They may try to connect the godmothers to the themes of the various neighborhoods. Like when the Voyager came out with the first ice rink at sea, they had Katerina Witt as she was an ice skating champion. They also look for folks who have succeeded in related areas.
