Public Transportation to 7 Mile Beach?

Hey everyone. I'm going to be going to Grand Cayman on December 31 and had a question about getting to 7 Mile Beach. Do the public buses run frequently/what's the difference in cost between that and a taxi? Also, would the public transportation be running even though it's New Years Eve?

Thanks!!!

Matt

It may have changed since we were there but it used to be $2.50/person to ride the bus. The cab fare will vary with the distance traveled but should be around $5/person. The buses run very regularly. If there are cruise ships in port - the cabs and busses will be running.

I hope this helps!

Enjoy!

When we were there last August it was $5 per person each way. The journey took about 15 mins.Note: The "cab" in our case was a mini bus that carried 12 to 15 people and only set off once it was full.We had some waiting time at both ends while the "Cab" filled up but it was still cheaper than the ship excursion.

I will be in George Town with my Mom & Sister in April and have considered 7 Mile Beach. Big Question's for me here ....

Are there Taxi Station's along 7 Mile Beach where you can get a Taxi back to the Pier to tender back to the ship ?????

Are there Bus station's along 7 Mile Beach ?????

Can you get on a Bus and pay cash when boarding the Bus to return back to the Tenders ?????

Thanks

Taxis are waiting at the dock to take you to any of the popular becah spots along Seven Mile Beach. Taxis are a shared ride in a minibus and the driver will wait until they are full before leaving. Cost is about US$5 to US$6 one way.

Public buses running to West Bay (look for WB on the bus) leave from the bus depot which is next to the Waterfront Centre building. They can drop you on the road at any of the same spots for US$2.50 one way.

For your ride back to town you can catch a waiting taxi at many of the popular spots. Again they may wait until full before leaving.

You can cross the road and flag down a public bus. You do not have to be at one of teh few designated bus stops... you can just throw out your arm and flag down a bus anywhere along West Bay Road. There are many buses running so it is usually a short wait.

So you don't have to purchase a Bus Ticket..... you can just pay $2.50 apon boarding the Bus......right ?

For public buses you pay when you get off the bus - not when you board. Cash only. US$2.50 = CI$2.00 is the fare for the West Bay route. Fares differ on some routes according to how far you travel.

Sit near the front if possible. Buses tend to fill up completely, including jump seats that fold down and block the aisle. If you are only traveling as far as Seven Mile Beach then you should try to take a seat directly opposite the door.

Is it possible to get public transportation to Rum Point?

If not what is the best way to get there?

There are 7 of us<

There are no buses to Rum Point. It's a 45 minute drive from the port area.

A taxi to Rum Point would be at least $80 US each way, probably more for a larger group like yours. The one trip that I've taken from that area to the airport with 5 people in the van was about $150 US one way, for example. Also, as there are no taxis usually waiting in the area, you would need to prearrange the return trip.

You could maybe arrange with one of the taxis to act as a private guide for the day, and add a few other stops of interest, but I don't know what the rates would be for that.

Renting a car or van for the day and driving there yourselves, or taking an excursion (via the ship or with a private operator) that includes a stop at Rum Point, is likely a more economically feasible way of getting there.

We rented a van last time we were in Grand Cayman to go to Rum Point. We first went to visit Hell, then drove over to Rum Point beach. Was under $100. for the day. There were 8 of us, and we split it 8 ways, much cheaper than an excursion. And, we could dictate when and where we went and how long to stay. Very easy. It is also easy to drive on the "wrong" side of the road. Just follow the other traffic. When on the other side of the island where there isn't much traffic, just watch out, and if you make a turn, have the passengers remind you to stay on your side of the road!
