Smoking Concerns for Eastern European Cruise

I'm trying to pick which cruise line to take for an Eastern European cruise. I realize that the majority of passengers will probably be European and they have a different view on smoking. However, my mother is highly susceptible to cigarette smoke. Even the remnants of it left in staterooms. That's why I always take an air-cleaning product with us. Has anyone taken this itinerary with Costa and found that there was/wasn't a major problem? Any information you have would be greatly appreciated because I don't want to take her on a vacation only for her to spend the entire trip sick.

I would recommend Azamara or Oceania for someone wanting a close to nonsmoking environment. There was an article last winter or spring on Frommer's site on this very topic. You might be able to find it with the help of Mr. Google. :)

Lots of luck on land in Eastern Europe. It is like being in North Carolina thirty years ago, because smoking is done everywhere, with little or no regard for anyone carrying oxygen or who is asthmatic, I'm sorry to say. If you make friends with someone, that person may decide not to smoke in your presence, if you explain yourself well. Otherwise, strangers will light up in tiny spaces without questioning you as to your needs.

What is your definition of Eastern European?

For Europeans an Eastern Euroean cruise would either be in the Baltic Sea (Poland, Estonia, Russia etc.) or Black Sea (Bulgaria, Rumania, Ukraine), or do you mean Easten Mediterranean (Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Israel etc.).

i don't think the OP is really considering a cruise. they have posted this same question on several forums - NCL, RCI, celebrity and others. i think the OP is a nanny spreading their anti-smoking agenda.

Ctheworld you may be right. In any case, I recently read that MSC now offers almost smoke-free cruises. Only one bar and the outside decks for smoking. Verbotten in cabins, balconies, and all public use areas other than the smoker's bar. Since Costa frequently follows MSC's lead, maybe we'll see improvements here too.

Costa's smoking policy has always been one side only, this has been reduce over the past few years,

BUT it clearly states the areas where smoking is permitted.

Open your eyes and you will never be bothered by the smokers on board. keep away from Casino except non-smoking nights. SIMPLES

Cthe WOrld - I'm sorry if information gathering bothers you. Some of us like to make informed decisions to ensure an enjoyable trip.

For those of you who are able to provide information without taking offense to questions - thank you for your information. I have had Celebrity mentioned several times and have looked into them.

We are booking a cruise in the Baltic for May 2010 and are also looking for a smoke free environment. Did you take the cruise and how did you like it?

Unfortunately, when someone chooses to NOT smoke, it does not bother anyone. When someone chooses TO smoke, it bothers all who do not smoke -- and is a health hazard. When smokers smoke around non-smokers, it is just basically rude. There is nothing really that you can do about it.

I've been on five Costa cruises, and the smoking areas are clearly posted. I'm not a smoker and I've never had a problem with smokers on Costa. Besides, a little whiff of the smell of smoke isn't that offensive to me, and the smell does not pose a health hazard.

If you cannot tolerate even the faintest smell of smoke, do as tenpin wrote above -- open your eyes and avoid the smoking areas on the ship. Depending upon your itinerary, you may find it much harder to avoid smokers on shore than on the ship.

1. people whining about smokers is irritating.

2. you can do something about it - shut up and take your business elsewhere. :p
