Maxiecat3 Posted December 30, 2009 #26 Share Posted December 30, 2009 I'm really needing a vacation after a rough couple of months. I've been getting prices for just an inside cabin Feb 4 to the 8th, and the prices are incredible. Totally affordable. However, when I went to price airfare for the 2 of us from OKC to MIA or even FLL, it is a whopping $1840. Three and a half times the price of the cruise fare. I'm desperate to "get away", but 2300 seems like a bit much for 4 days. I wish I lived local and didn't have to pay outrageous trabvel fares! I didn't see where anybody else mentioned that this is Super Bowl weekend in Miami. That might explain the higher airfare. Also, to save airfare and come in a day or 2 earlier, you had better check with hotel rates for the same time frame as they might be over the top. Good luck as we are able to make a 3 hour drive to the port from where we live. Gregg
trock Posted December 30, 2009 #27 Share Posted December 30, 2009 I live just north of Dallas, an hour from Oklahoma. Iv priced it too and you might as well look at Ecstasy, Voyager or Galveston right now and add a hotel. The GREAT news I found out this week is hotels in Galveston right now are the best prices Iv ever seen. You can get a beachfront hotel that goes for $150 in Sept for $50 right now. Harbor House on hotels.com is $80 (these prices are thru January, once you check February, the prices jump, wonder if they will come down though?) Im amazed hotels are priced this cheap. I found tons of bargains. Drive down and hop on Ecstasy if you want a 4 day cruise and come down the day before and enjoy a top notch hotel I have a friend/co-worker that lives in Richardson...I just noticed your location!:p

FL and the beach and the Sawgrass Mall etc. I moved here from S. FL to help out my folks with driving. Rare patrice1 Posted December 31, 2009 #29 Share Posted December 31, 2009 I'm a "masshole" by birth - I was born and raised in Salem, MA (and I have a broom in my office to prove it!) Have lived for 20 years in FL, the last 8 in Key West. I found out that there really is a "Seasonal Affective Disorder". The gray winter in Mass just about killed me. No problems here! Don't mind only 2 seasons - wet & dry - and don't miss the gray at all. We were able to buy a home here recently because of the housing drop, but it's still expensive to live in South Florida. Love the relative closeness of ports and we do take advantage of deals. There's really no better place, in our minds!:D
ItsAllAboutTheSass Posted December 31, 2009 #30 Share Posted December 31, 2009 I have made it known to my boss that I am willing to relocate to Florida if it is an option. Problem is, we don't have any offices in Florida...
misguidedangel Posted December 31, 2009 #31 Share Posted December 31, 2009 I hear you there, but I have had a HELLISH three months since my last cruise. Nothing has gone right and people at work have screwed me left, right, and center out of what is deservedly mind (as in pay I should have gotten, but didn't), and the a idiot of a umpire who sat there and didn't hear a damn thing I said about what I did and decided that I am scum-sucking low life scum (otherwise known as administrative/clerical staff) and I really don't do more than my job description, which doesn't mention 50% of my job duties, but he wasn't awake when I was talking about it, so me missed hearing that. I am fortunate, I am getting away from it all in 16 days!!!! I am so ready, I really need to get away.....I've been at quitting-on-the-spot point now for three months! ohitssunshine Posted December 31, 2009 #33 Share Posted December 31, 2009 Growing up in NY I always wondered why I was ripped off...why did my parents have to grow up in NY? I hate the cold and snow! So I did something about it. I moved to FL. Best move I ever made. I live in Central FL, I can get to Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, wherever in hours. I love it! cccer Posted December 31, 2009 #34 Share Posted December 31, 2009 My wife and I are looking for something in Florida now for when we retire. It would be nice to drive to the port. But it will be nowhere near Miami. As I told my wife last year in Miami, I love this place but if we lived here I would never come here.
JordanLovesCruisin Posted December 31, 2009 Author #35 Share Posted December 31, 2009 Thank you for all of your replies!!! Luckily, maybe next spring I will get an internship at the children's hospital in Miami for my child life specialist certification/training. My dad told me I could hop on all of the 3 and 4 dayers I wanted! After being rejected from two nursing schools (with a 3.4 GPA, 89 on my entrance exams, and three great references, mind you), losing a few family members, and family problems all around, I'm desperate! I priced some flights from DFW to MIA and it's MUCH cheaper. May end up doing that!! Thank you for your suggestions. I can't picture my ADD hiney driving 24 hours or riding for 24 hours. Maybe the 4-8 is a bad weekend due to the Superbowl, it just seemed like a great long weekend off of school. To whomever posted about Wichita, I'm a Wichita native! And a Keller, Texas transplant! But it will be nowhere near Miami. As I told my wife last year in Miami, I love this place but if we lived here I would never come here. Look into Naples, FL. We have tons of retirees here along with a growing family population. We're just across the state from Miami on the Gulf Coast. Beautiful weather like Miami, but much quieter. You're only a 2 hour drive from the Port of Miami and about 2.5-3 hours away from Tampa's port. 3.5 hour drive to Disney- my favorite!

steveaaaaa Posted December 31, 2009 #44 Share Posted December 31, 2009 Just think how burnt out you would be on cruising ... and then you would want to move. lol ... I do know one CCer who wants to move to FL when she retires to cruise all the time. Thats how I feel or felt until I got here. It has lost its allure. Five years ago I lived in New England and always wanted to escape the cold to a warm cruise. Now that I am here, our beaches are beautifull which I live near, our nightclubs are great,we have video slots on every corner, poker lounges within 15 miles, comedy clubs,I have a sailboat, kayak, motorcycle, and Orlando is an hours drive away.Great golf courses are everywhere. I now use the ship as a scuba transport primarily. Steve

Carnival is definitely fun if you like laying by the pool and ordering a bucket of beer or frozen drink, and the shows are great, food is great. If you like more adventure, RCI's voyager class (Voyager, Adventure, Mariner, Navigator of the Seas) or Freedom class (Independence, Freedom, and Liberty of the seas) is more for you. They have rock-climbing walls, ice skating rink, in-line skating tracks, and in my opinion, cater to the athletes more. My FH, Mark is a football player, and I think he would have loved having all of the amenities that I experienced on Mariner or Adventure. The Valor was his first time to fly, first time to cruise, etc, so he was in awe in general, and had a wonderful time. Feel free to email me at jjlashley@cox.net and I can send you pictures of both cruiselines/ships. I'd be more than happy to, and have all of the time in the world today (first day off work in forever!). I hope you two have fun!

cjt3 Posted December 31, 2009 #48 Share Posted December 31, 2009 I wish I lived local and didn't have to pay outrageous trabvel fares! We live 60 miles from Galveston, and it is definitely nice not having to pay airfare or hotel. Our problem is being hostage to school schedules with two school-age children. Galveston cruise prices can be triple the "normal" rate during school holidays!
