"Naughty room" for 2 airplane bottles of rum!

To add another question to this tedious thread....... if one puts scotch, etc., in a mouthwash bottle (rinsed and cleaned first of course!), and IF RCCL sends the bag to the 'naughty room' to question the bottle - do they make you open the bottle for them to sniff? Taste? Guzzle??? Just wondering.....!!!!

I assume you are referring to me. I was not comparing Disney to RCCL. I was only speaking of booking prices compared to the rules of bringing alcohol on board. It is no secret that cruise lines make a good chunk of their revenue from liquor sales. I have never sailed Disney, but it seems that liquor sales on Disney ships are not quite at the revenue levels of bigger cruise lines....resulting in lower fares on those bigger cruise lines.

Yes Paul, I am sorry I couldn't remember your name once I started responding and it looks like we might be in agreement (I think?). Disney is a more expensive cruise but it is first class all the way.

By all accounts, I agree with you. I'm sure I will try them some day. :)

I have read so, yes. Although I have never experienced but I don't smuggle and I don't know of anyone personally that has been caught that way.

A really ironic twist on this issue is that family-friendly Disney cruiseline has absolutely no restrictions on bringing alcoholic beverages on board as long as they are in your carry-ons and can fit thru the scanners. We cruised with them last week and took 2 flasks of rum and 2 flasks of vodka. Bought a bottle of almond flavored local rum in St. Martin and enjoyed it after dinner. We had a little cocktail party in our room every night with our traveling companions and an occasional drink on the balcony on sea days. Our bar bill was still substantial but I appreciated the chance to have a drink in our cabins. And we didn't see anyone on board that was drunk. Brought back 1 vodka and 1 rum flask.

Yes, I have my rumrunners in hand for our RCCL cruise.

That is very interesting; and, a reasonable aproach on the part of the cruise line.

Yes it is funny that the cruise line that caters to kids and families treats adults like adults. And the royal line treats adults like kids. Ironic isn't it.

I think they try to get any kind of alcohol. I've been told, but don't know if it's accurate info, that the boxes of wine (with plastic-type bags inside them) are not the profile that they are looking for, and it's tougher to spot them. (That's why Rum-Runners work)

But, if they are really spending time and scruntinizing a bag, I'm betting they will be able to spot everything.

Rum Runners don't work when you walk back on board from port with a liter of whiskey inside a Rum Runner. I bought a liter at duty free in Cozumel last month an poured in in the RR. Put it in my carry on bag and re-boarded. Put in on the security scanner belt "Ding" goes the bell. Security asked me to open the bag saying there was liquid in the bag. I said it was "water" but he asked to to open the bag. I did and he said "is it liquor." I said no. He smelled the outside of the cap and said "Go ahead" and handed me back the Rum Runner.

You never know. But now we all know a Rum Runner going through a scanner by it's self will get a "DING."

The liquid of course. In RR or in a bottle or in a plastic bag, liquid will get a "DING" in the security scanner when you re-board a ship. Never had a detect in my check on bags. Put it on the bottom of the bag with shoes and solid things on top of it.

Not petty at all.

Disregarding the rules sometimes leads to consequences.

No booze means no booze...period.

Bet your Mother is old enough to know that.

You are quite right..............but

If they are going to confiscate two minitures......I hope that they properly tagged them and allowed the passenger to have them back at the end of the cruise........so at least she could enjoy having something on the plane ride back!!:D

I don't care how you feel about the smuggling situation........that is beyond regulations. No one can even get drunk on 2 mini's.

So, I suppose that is why you cruise on CCL??

Two of my friends were caught and one was a Diamond Plus member who gets all the free booze he wants. Its a silly game that we play.

The unfortunate part is "responsible"drinking is encouraged by RCCL once you are on the ship. Too many mixed signals.:(

On RCl they treat adults as children. On Disney they treat children as adults. On Disney you can bring on board in your carry one or check in all the booze you want. No problem. Spirits, beer or want ever and they let you take it on board. RCL, CCL and others NO! Where is the medium for this?

But at least the "others" let you buy a bottle for consumption in your room. I'd rather that than a total ban like RCL. And if that's the type of crowd they're marketing to, I'd rather skip them.

Good reply. If only RCl, CCl, Hal and other would compile.

When we sailed Disney in 2000, we were astonished to find that there was an entire deck dedicated ONLY to adults. It had bars, a comedy club, etc. They had an adults only pool. On their private island, there was an adults only beach-it was so isolated you had to take a little train to get to it. Even more astonishing, all of these adults only areas were strictly enforced.:) The ship was beautiful, the kids club was fantastic, restaurants incredible in design. We were delighted as we had expected it to be all about the kids and something we would have to "tolerate" for their benefit.

Well, I guess Disney figures that if you're stuck on a boat which half the passengers are between 3 and 13 for a week and without a casino, you deserve all the booze you can bring on board. :D

Bingo! Our new solution is to make DD travel on RCI with us so we can have fun in the casino and then fit in a Disney visit at the end on the way home if we can. :)

Slightly off-topic, but perhaps this will bring a few of you a smile. Last summer was the first time we did this (she is mad we don't have time to do this during Spring Break because of the car travel time on both ends). She did not know in advance we were going to Disney and fell asleep in the car only to wake up as we were pulling in to the Grand Floridian. Then when we went inside they asked us if they could give her a "magical moment" and have her join in the Mad Hatter's tea party about to start. I don't think a kid could have had a more magical moment. I say we "make her" travel on RCI, but she really enjoys it a lot--she is stoked to go back to Nachi Cocom again.

I got "dinged" and they wanded me? The bag with the rumrunner wrapped in a beach towel got right through. Now, I always put a bottle of water in another compartment in the instance they would ask for the liquid, I would pull out the bottle of water. :)

And imagine that...no slobering drunks stumbling down the corridors from excess drinking in their cabins. It's nice to be treated like adults isn't it?;)

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi all, I'm new here. I have to tell you my first reation is that this is more entertaining than a gun thread at Huffington Post ;)

That all said, I agree that RCL does state their alcohol policy in the contract's fine print - but it's certainly NOT highlighted. In fact, it's on page 5 of the 10 page fine print contract. And RCL knows that few people read all 10 pages prior to booking. Note also that they don't highlight the no alcohol policy or what their prices are for drinks - (including even soda and water) at anytime during the booking process. I'd be very interested in RCL's chief ethics officer taking a stab at defending what is (pretty obvious to me anyway) intentional obfiscation of policies that have large financial impact on final pricing to the customer.

I don't want to be a smuggler, but neither do I want a bar tab equalling the entire price of my cruise either - and I've had one of those in the past on Carnival. I also like the convenience of being able to have a drink of my choice in my cabin when I want it and not have to walk to a bar or wait for room service (if that is even an option).

I'd gladly pay double retail for beer, wine, booze delivered to my cabin and not even think about smuggling, which would allow RCL a pretty reasonable profit and address the security issues that potentially exist with large quantities of liquids.

There has to be a reasonable middle ground here unless the only underlying issue is an outright money grab, which I think many logically suspect. Either way, the current situation represents an ethics problem in RCL's marketing and customer relations - an issue they should address quickly and transparently.

When I want to bring MY swords onboard I put them in a "swordrunner". My wife likes to swordfight on the balcony before dinner. It's not taking any money from RCCL as they do not provide the types of swords we enjoy fighting with.

This actually made me laugh, very loudly. Can you imagine swordfighting on a balcony- picturing it is just cracking me up!
