I highly recommend a tour of the back side of the island. Ask to go to the Bob Marley Bar and to Coconuts. That side of the island is absolutely stunning.

 

I agree with the above post. The west side where San Migual is located is heavily developed (nice and active mind you - but developed). The east side has beautiful beaches too, is undeveloped and laid back with some famous tequila enfused beach bars. Just south of Coconuts Restaurant (1/4 mi. beach walk) is Chen Rio beach which is a local favorite that has a small peninsular natural rock breakwater that keeps the beach placid on more surf up days (goog for kids). There's a sandy beach bar purveyor there too; but Coconuts up on its bluff overlooking that azure water is worth the walk; great food and drink, usually a Mariachi band playing.

 

Taxis ply this road constantly. You'll have no trouble getting a ride (fares are regulated well; the cabbies are good guys generally).
