What if Carnival did this...would you try it?

Recommended Posts

I think that Carnival will eventually do this, but what does everyone else think if they did? Would you go on this ship?

I think we will see one of the older Carnival ships, that go into drydock, have the main dining rooms completly removed and be replaced with, maybe some more cabins and a additional buffet. I personally wouldn't like it and never sail on it. But I can see a lot of people that wouldn't care if they did and just use the buffet and smaller food shops now anyway. Carnival would be adding more rooms(more people = more money), they would need less waiters(less cost for them, and less tip money from us so they could lower the tips we pay). They food quality would be less since its buffet only (less cost for Carnival).

And no dress code. It could be total casual all the time. Baithing suit and flip flops 24x7.

With all of these cost savings, adding more rooms, and since its an older ship, I would think that Carnival could charge a lot less for cabins.

Would you try it if Carnival charged, say $250 or $300 PP for an inside on a 7 day cruse? or say maybe $400 for a balcony? And only charged, say $5 or $6 per day PP for tips.

What would you pay?

Just something fun to think and talk about.:)

We definitely would not try it, but we enjoy the whole dining room experience (minus the dancing waitstaff) We love to try new foods and enjoy the chefs' interpretation of older foods. We do dress up a little on regular nights and always dress up on elegant night.

This is one of the traditions I would hate to lose, but I am sure there is a market out there for it, so perhaps they might try it.

They tried with a nonsmoking ship and didn't get the response they planned so not sure if they would try to be the first to try it, but might follow suit if someone else did.

Cheers, Carole

I wouldn't do it, but I actually think that there would be enough people who would that it could be a decent business practice. I mean, look at EasyCruise!

There *are* people who eat at the buffet and grills. For them, the cruise isn't about being pampered, or for the "dining experience", it is for the ports, primarily, and the casino, the possibility of multiple venues of entertainment.

I think that taking one of the oldest ships and giving it a try, wouldn't be a bad idea!

You should have seen some posts in 5 years about DOING RESEARCH!!

Had you done some you would have found that STAR CRUISES has been doing essentially what you propose, for years.

They have a fare that allows you to eat in the buffet only.

A higher fare allows one into a dining room. And a still higher fare allows one into the upscale dining room. And there is no switching back and forth. They may even have a super low pack your own food fare!

IT HAS NEVER CAUGHT ON! With any other line!

The only thing it did is be the 'model' for NCL"s "Freestyle Cruising." STAR bought NCL some years back and "Freestyle" was their idea of combining the STAR multi-level marketing with the USA's traditional dining.

It was ridiculously easy for all the other lines to trump "Freestyle" with a choice of traditional or anytime.

The major cost of the food on a ship IS the food, not the tip paid help. And 2000, 2500, 3000 people will consume a given quantity of food, wherever it is served.

I would definitely go on this cruise, especially for that price! And before anyone says that I am a redneck, I assure you that I'm not! It's just that I do not enjoy spending hours to go get ready eat, having to sit with people I don't know and have waiters hover over me. We already choose not to eat in the dining room, so it wouldn't be that differnt. I know that many people enjoy the dining room experience, so I don't see this happening anytime soon!

The OP needs to do a little more research....this has been done. The results are in.

Yes...look at EasyCruise...you know, in the history books....

The all-buffet line dining reminds me of my first joke from the poof'd Murder thread.... something along the lines of "All buffets will be remodeled and styled in the theme of Hungy Hungry Hippos..." ...MDR FTW, its nice to keep a little decorum and civility in this world ;)

I don't understand the hostility of many of these responses. The OP threw out an idea to discuss. I think he/she even said they wouldn't really be interested in one of these types of things. It was a point of *discussion*.

Can people no longer even bring up things to ponder, and respond to, without being attacked for even daring to voice a thought?

Those of you who wrote mean and sarcastic responses should be ashamed of yourselves. If you don't think it is a good idea, say so, but the fact that you do so in such a nasty manner says a lot more about you than it does the OP, or the idea.

Sorry dude, it's a nice thought, but it just wn't fly!!!!! The last cruise I went on the MDR was packed everynight except for one night when we left at 6pm and some people opted to not come if they got back on very late.

Cruise costs--the fares, as mentioned in the press release re increase in fares, was almost rock bottom price for Carnival to show a profit. I think a minor increase of max 5% is fair. For those that are bargain hunters and don't mind the lowest deck inside or outside, it isn't gonna hurt them much. Now, those that book higher deck balconies and suites will notice the price more. Anyone who is a bargain basement price cruiser, and it is fair to want to go at the cheapest price, will moan and groan at the price increase, those, like me, who can't get away as often because of distance will pay a reasonable/fair price.

I think for most of us it is a priviledge to have enough money to cruise, so until I can't afford to go, I will keep cruising....
