Is Smoking getting worse on balconies - odds of balcony being unusable?

"As soon as a few more of the older smokers die off it just might happen."

Nice, real Nice ........ NOT.

Since when is it acceptable to wish someone dead just because they happen to be a smoker? Just so you can get your way?

You're the one who read "wish" into the statement. I was only stating something that might come about some day.

When I have my air intake set on outside air, it's usually the smell of exhaust from a gasoline or diesel engines that I smell

The smell of exhaust is like white noise. The smell of cigarette smoke is like the air horn! We all grew up with the smell of exhaust. For ex-smokers, the smell of cigarette smoke is nauseating! I know numerous people that have died from smoking; I don't see too many news articles of people dying from exhaust -- not saying it doesn't happen; just saying it's not very well documented!

I can't comment on the balcony, but we were strongly considering a HAL cruise before I booked this Princess one. A CC review said the smoking on the ship we were considering had a very liberal smoking policy. I asked my TA about it & she said that since HAL caters to an older crowd with more smokers that yes smoking would be allowed in more places.

We had no problems with NCL last year, but the Carnival cruise in 2007 smoking was allowed in every lounge. I do not know if they have gotten stricter since then.

I wear gas permeable contact lenses and I always have problems in smoking areas.

No? Really? How about exhaust asphyxiation?

We found HAL to be far worse than Princess on the Smoking. The larger ships on Princess have non-smoking parts of the casino and total no smoking inthe casino on formal night -HAL it was rampent.

An air horn? Seriously? That just might make me contemplate murder.

On the Crown last week some idiot on a deck above us had an air horn and kept blowing it whenever we left port or arrived in port. Someone was always shouting at him to shut up. Never could find which cabin they were in. I find that worse than a smoker.

I can detect a person smoking three car lengths ahead of me doing 35 mph but at least I can go in front of them whereas on a ship there isn't much choice. (and it's not in my brain)

I am trying to decide if you are serious or not- So let me get this- you are driving down the street-windows closed and three car lengths ahead of you, you can actually tell whether that person is smoking or not!!You definately need to change careers and get into police work and take the place of tracking canines-imagine the possibilities

This is definitely serious. I can't say I've smelled someone three cars ahead of me, but I've definitely gotten the smell of cigarette smoke when I've had the outside air intake on in my car. DH smells it, too, almost before I do. We shut off the intake and go for the stale air in the car, it is a vast improvement. I'll take some good old exhaust fumes before cigarette smoke any day! Although, I must admit I never would have noticed this when I was a smoker myself!

I think they call that suicide. Oh, wait, what do they call smoking??

It's only suicide if it was done intentionally. The point I was trying to make is that exhaust fumes are far more toxic, how can we deny that? I usually never add to these smoking threads and now I see why. Everyone on both sides tries to rationalize their argument. Can you agree with that? I am not saying that smoking does not endanger people's health.

I can most definitely agree with that!! Now, who is to say who is right and who is wrong!?!?!?!?!?!? On that I have a very definite opinion!;)

The most interesting question.... ;) Try asking why they don't put smokers on one side of the ship, and non smokers on the other side?

I asked... and have been told its because even smokers don't want the smoking rooms. The problem is, that if dad smokes... mom and or kids don't necessary want to be lumped in a group of smokey balconies for 10 days.

This is the same kind of logic that helped kill the 100% non-smoking cruise ship concept. Many families have at least one person who smokes.... so even lines like Celebrity still see the point of allowing some smoking.

The main problem to consider... is the morning rush hour. Smokers like to smoke when they first get up. I like to eat my breakfast on the balcony and enjoy the view of each new port. I usually lose this battle :(.

The sad part, was the morning smoking cough. We had 2 or 3 smokers around us, and they all took turns in the morning on the balcony with the smokers cough. Not very romantic way to start the day. They don't show that part in the travel brochure :D

I love the balcony so much that I will put up with the smoke. I'd say it is true however that smokers are booking more balconies as other parts of the ship restrict smoking. And all other aspects of life make it harder for smokers. They must feel that cruise ships are the last place where they can still smoke like its the 1970's again LOL

I'd say its normally a small problem, but can be a major problem if you get a chain smoker. So I bet a lot of non-smokers spend more time worrying about it, than suffering any actual negative consequences. But you can't blame them, the world is changing... entire states are going smoke free, and even beaches are now smoke free. People start to get use to having fresh air, and its harder for them to go back in time to the days where you just had to deal with it.

Celebrity just doesn't have enough trips, or I'd be a loyal fan, and let the smokers do their thing in peace. (I'll never blame the smoker, after all its the cruise line who refuses to separate smoking and non smoking balconies in the name of greater profits and easier booking). This is the reason you hear smokers commonly say... why are the non-smokers such complainers? Well the answer is that they are the group that is negatively impacted by the current system.

First of all I drive a motorcycle & all smells are very evident all the time, dead animals, exhaust fumes, donut shops and especially the stench of cigarette & cigar smoke. Yes, it's very detectable emanating from a car in front driving down local roads at speeds under 40 mph. Only someone who drives a bike can understand what I talking about.

Give it a try & let us know your results.

Are there REALLY entire states where its not legal to light up at all?

Are we talking States in the United States?

Or some other states?

It would be nice if all the non-smokers booked Celebrity or took inside or OV cabins. Then we wouldn't have to hear them bleat and moan. Maybe the balconies would even get cheaper when less people booked them. Non-smokers............ you show 'em!!! Have at it!

Amazing attitude!!!! Luckily there are less of your kind around due to ex-smokers having seen the light or getting a visit from the grim reaper. :p

thank you, Doug, as I was thinking just the same thing. A few months ago, I lost my MIL to lung cancer, and she quit many years before. The ones who it doesn't catch up with are darn lucky.

This isn't so amazing. If I have my air intake set on outside air, it's quite easy to detect smoke from a nearby car.

And, for me, it's not the nose (nor the brain )....it's the lungs. I can have an asthma attack riding behind a horse trailer on the expressway. Yes, some of us are just unlucky that way. That's why we just book insides on Princess...no worries, no issues.

Although, we had the constant smell of smoke in the corridor outside our cabin on our first of B2B Ruby cruises in January. Obviously, a neighbor across the hall was smoking on his/her balcony, and had the sliding glass door open, and the air was being sucked into the corridor. So if you're going to smoke, please close the balcony door!

There are times I can smell tobacco while in a car. I can look around and spot the car and sometimes their window is open. One thing to think about is the number of smokers who smoke with their car window open (perhaps so their car doesn't stink as much) and those who smoke on the balcony so that their cabin doesn't stink as much.

Except, Princess has twice the amount of ships that Celebrity does and only what...20% of the population smokes?? so how about, they switch, Non-smokers on Princess and Celebrity can have the smokers? ;) Much better math :) :)

Great idea. We want to stay with Princess. We do get inside cabins; just don't want to deal with having to dodge smokers (the ones who walk around inside the ship without regards to others).

Can't say I've ever had to dodge walking smokers in a ship, I must go on cruises with a different demographic to you. I only ever see them sitting at designated smoking tables on deck.

There seems very little tolerance these days to a temporary hiccup to people's otherwise bland and sterile existences.

If there is so much on a cruiseship to upset these selfproclaimed perfect people why don't they just stay at home and read some edifying book?

Away from smokers, children, sun bed hogs, people who drink, and all the other annoying folk.

I think what finished me off was on a ship where an outraged female sunbather started cursing me for standing in the "wrong place" for a few seconds chatting to a friend - and blocking her precious sunlight.

Now I don't care what any of you sad complaining people say - I'll do my thing and to **** with you.

That was a razz against smokers who don't care about others not people like your MIL. After 23 years as 3 pack a day smoker I fear the possibility of cancer even after 20 years since my last Marlboro.

My condolences

By the way, my habit would cost $6,000 a year  at todays prices that is a cruise or two.
