Final word on wine on board >>>

Hello everybody !

We booked next Nautica cruise from Athens to Istanbul in September. I was on several lines before, but never on Oceania.

I heard different rumors about wine policy. Can we buy local wine and bring 1-2 bottles on board to drink in our cabin ? Any restrictions for this ?

I understand that we can not bring this wine to public areas and dinner.

I also know that we can "save" unfinished wine bottle for next dinner.

I'll appreciate your input.

Best regards,

Gary & Lana.

Oceania has a more liberal policy than some cruise lines. They will let you bring a couple of bottles on board for consumption in your cabin. There is a bottle opener in the room.

For a corkage fee, you can bring a bottle to the dining rooms for enjoyment with your meal.

On our Oceania cruises we have gotten spoiled! Our butler would chill a bottle we left out for us each afternoon.....it was lovely to return from a long and hot day of sightseeing to a cool cabin with one of our favorite wines chilling on ice. Slip the shoes off, take a seat and enjoy. Heaven!

I believe the corkage fee is $20.

Your cabin steward, irregardless of you cabin level, will provide a corkscrew, wine glasses, etc if you ask.

(Note you may also bring hard liquor on board for in room consumption)

We always ordered a cheese plate from room service and had wine and cheese in the room. We also purchased snacks in the ports to go with drinks.

You may also order house wine during happy hour and get two for one. We always enjoyed one in the bar and took the second to the table to enjoy with dinner.

Sorry shedevil, but you are wrong on quantity. Whatever you can bring on, so be it! My forte is finding wine shops in every port we have visited on O. Never have been questioned on what I bring aboard.

Since you had a butler, that says a suite or concierge. Why not put the bottle in the frige, assuming you had one. That's what we do.

Greetings Leonid - champagne bottles take up lots of room and I usually had filled up the frigerator with my diet coke and water bottles. One of the CruiseCritic posters gave me the tip to take out all of the "mini-bar" stuff and put my stuff in the frigerator.

Plus, there was a feeling of being special with having someone taking the time to prepare the table for our return to the cabin. I loved opening the door of the cabin tired and hot from exploring and seeing a crisp, white cloth on the table, chilled wine and glasses and usually a small vase with a fresh flower. The only downside was knowing that when the cruise ended.....it would be back to doing my own grocery shopping, changing my own sheets, and being my own butler.

I did not mean to mislead on the amount you can carry on board. I said a couple because that was the number the OP listed. We went on one cruise and our friend carried on 18 bottles. He had gone wine tasting and had happily purchased wine at almost every stop! And we still had a large enough total bar tab on our final bill that was a little embarrassing. :o

She Devil,

Wasn't that a wonderful feeling coming back to the room hot, tired, sweaty, and having hor d'oervres and chilled glasses waiting for some vodka or scotch. This was the first time we had a butler. You are right, the fridge does not hold too much. Thanks for the hint to leave the wine for the butler to chill.

We also carried on a lot of spirits and you would not believe the size of our martini/horizon bill:eek: We just love sitting at a bar seat chatting with different folks

WHERE did you EVER pick up bad habits like that??

I fear that you fell in with the wrong people on a previous cruise..... ;)

  • 2 months later...

My wife is a wine drinker who only drinks 1 glass with dinner. If we buy a bottle of wine on at, say, the Grand Dining Room can we gain access to it at the other restaurants later on?

(I'm a beer drinker and I can usually finish a bottle...or two...or three...or :D

The bottle will follow you around the ship.

Yes, you will be able to access the unfinished wine at any of the restaurants or lounges on the ship.

It's a lovely option, and makes for a very relaxed atmosphere.

Never met a bar stool I didn't like. Rolled coins recently and decided to put in my "cruise account". Amounted to $170, Jim said "Well that will cover our bar tab for one day":p.

That's a scary image. Hopefully it will be accompanied by the beer bottle...or two :p

(As J&S said, "this is a lovely option")

Thanks.

Glad you enjoy the wine bottle cyclist. :)

Amazing metalwork, that's for sure.

(Wish I had the talent to create something like that.)

IT was incredible! I googled "wine bottle tennis player" (my passion) and found that there is a place where you can find wine bottle 'covers' for quite a few occupations/sports:

I did not know that I was married to you! :)

I do not drink beer (unless you count framboise beer in Belgium which my spouse avers tastes just like cough syrup), perhaps will drink two glasses of wine at dinner max if the wine is white, perhaps will manage one full glass at dinner if the wine is red, so basically I am a real drag when dining alone out with my red wine connoisseur husband. When the wine steward comes at the end of dinner to collect his cabin card to record our purchase of the bottle, spouse just gives the wine steward our cabin number which he writes directly on the bottle, and takes it away for appropriate storage and retrieval whenever we want at any of the restaurants.

Sadly, I still have almost a year to wait until our next Oceania cruise!
