lrcruising Posted May 3, 2010 #1 Share Posted May 3, 2010 We have 3 options that we are considering: 1. Princess transportation to Rome via bus $59 per person 2. Princess transportation to Rome via train $79 per person 3. Train to Rome on our own ??? per person Any thoughts/suggestions? We'd like to do the train but we have never been to Rome and would need some great suggestions from the cruisecritic members. Thanks
Rare Hlitner Posted May 3, 2010 #2 Share Posted May 3, 2010 Well, a BIRG pass which covers round-trip regional train to Rome plus all days use of Rome's buses and metro (subway) costs 9 Euros (about $13) per person. Of course if you choose to go to Rome on your own you might want to spend some time doing pre-trip homework and perhaps buy a decent Rome guide book such as the popular book published by Rick Steves. KirkNC Posted May 3, 2010 #3 Share Posted May 3, 2010 If you do a search you will find many threads full of information on this topic. If you take the train you: catch a port bus to get out of the dock area; walk about 15 minutes to the station and as Hank said, buy a BIRG ticket for 9 euros. Based on my research, this is probably the easiest port in Italy to catch the train. So you have saved either $46 or $66 per person by taking the train. The Princess transfers will just drop you off somewhere in Rome. No matter which you choose, you will need to figure out what you want to do once you get there. I do love the way Princess (and other lines) upcharge a $13 train ride to a $79 train ride. Kirk
iancal Posted May 3, 2010 #4 Share Posted May 3, 2010 Not certain why you anyone would spring for the $79. by train option when you can do it yourself for 9E AND have a pass that is good all day. It is a snap to do it on your own. Get a guidebook. Just remember, the Vatican stop in S. Pietro. We found the crowds much lighter in the later afternoon. I think that the cruise ship pricing for Rome (all of them) is a bit of a ripoff as it is so very easy to do it on your own.
