Canada Place - Skytrain from YVR

Recommended Posts

I know I have seen a thread on this before, but I can't find it now.:)

I think there were pictures, too.

I just read some information that has me concerned about embarking on our cruise in Vancouver/Canada Place.

We are arriving at Vancouver Airport on the morning of Sunday, Sept 26, the same day that our ship will depart. I would like to take the Canada Line SkyTrain from the airport YVR to the pier. I believe the stop to get off at is Waterfront Station.

How far is Waterfront Station to Canada Place? Is it difficult to get there?

Thanks for your help.

At YVR simply follow the crowd of people toward the car park out of the international arrivals. As soon as you cross the street, take the elevator or escalator to the top floor (of the car park), which is where the station is. Skytrain takes you all the way downtown to 'Waterfront Station'. At the final stop, DON'T follow the mass crowd down the hallway, but do a 180 and there's an elevator/stairs "Exit to Granville Street", take that and you're at the corner of Granville and W.Hastings. From there you should be able to see your ship at Canada Place (which will be 2 blocks north, 1 west of where you are). This particular photos shows you what I mean, that's the exit to the street: http://picasaweb.google.com/vancouvercruise/CanadaLineYVRToCanadaPlaceWaterfrontStation#5371860022220047170

Thanks, scottbee!

What a terrific help you are! I knew I had seen your post before, but I could not find it when I did a search. I am "directionally impaired" so the photos and map are perfect.

Some of the posts I read earlier today had me concerned. Some people describe Canada Place as chaotic.

What tips do you have that may help us avoid the crowds? We arrive at YVR at 9:30am. I am not one of those who have to be the first one on the ship.

I was thinking we could have lunch at a nearby restaurant and then make our way to the Golden Princess at Canada Place. Any suggestions?

THANKS again!

If you following the masses up to Cordova turn left and go to Steam Works for a restaurant . Just past parking lot down towards gas town. I think that there was a new Restaurant planned to open in the building that you exit also.

You will likely not make it to Waterfront depending on luggage/ flt time arrival etc. until after 11 AM anyways. Ride time on Skytrain is 26 mins. once you are on.

Great pics Scott. Thanks for the Granville St. exit tip. We had missed that every time so far.

lots of places have great food nearby. Was there a specific genre you were looking for? Frankly there's a ton of great restaurants by many of the stations, like Yaletown, and Broadway/City Hall

We like everything! Seafood and salad or burger and a beer. Moderate prices, and a view would be nice, too.;)

Thanks!

OK, if you like great burgers and great beer, ride Skytrain all the way to waterfront, ignore my previous comment about exiting on Granville street, and follow the crowd down into Waterfront station. Exit waterfront station, turn left, and head one blcok to your left (building next door east of Waterfront Stn) for STEAMWORKS PUB.

We love Vancouver!!!

Too bad you can't be there for a day ahead...maybe another time.

We did last year and rented bikes for a ride around Stanley Park! Great fun then we went to Steam Works for lunch and again for dinner. The food is really good and the beer is great. People watching was a blast.

We appreciate the tips for the SkyTrain also as we will be there in Sept 2010. It was not up and running when we were there last summer.

Congratulations on your cruise!

HI,

Noticed your "Martini Mates" We have a "Cocktail Club" of 26 gals in Seattle.

(The Martini is our logo)

We are taking the 1 day Princess Cruise up to Vancouver just for a fun night get away. Do you have any suggestions on what we can do in Vancouver for the day. There are 14 of us ages 30-50. We do not have cars. We are taking the Amtrak back at 5pm.

Thanks for any suggestions!

;) .... I guess since you will have had your share of cocktails on the way up you won't need directions to the best martini bars....eh? When the MMates sail we gt lots of attention with our flasher pins.

As you get off at Canada Place you can for sure start your day there. Go upto the main lobby of the Pan Pacific and start with a look at the day from their great bar. (coffee will be available) Weather will pretty well dictate your day so decide how it looks and go for it.

Raining. Take one of the tours from the front of the Hotel that "Does' The city. or maybe the seabus which you can see from the hotel that goes over to North Van and a touristi "Key" shopping area.... or maybe even sky train to the end of the line and back. (Not the Canada Line it takes you to the airport and mostly underground) Although the airport and the River Rock Casino might be a plan too and they are on the Canada Line. The other lines will also be able to drop you very close to Amtrak when you are ready to go.

If the sun is shining walk. Into the core after walking to the right out the door of Canada Place several blocks to see the Olympic Tourch. (not lit :( ) and along the shoreline to Stanley park. Rent Bikes ??

Hi, I'm arriving in Vancouver on Sept 18 the day before my cruise. I will be staying at the Executive Hotel on Howe St. Is this hotel accessible by the skytrain from the airport? Also, is there any info about this hotel. Hope it was ok to post here!

The Canada Line station that is closest to Executive Hotel is the Yaletown-Roundhouse station which is about 8 blocks east of the hotel with a bit of an uphill climb. If that doesn't work for you, you could take the line to the Waterfront Station and then transfer to a cab which will cost you about $10. map

As for the hotel, it is on the southern edge of the downtown peninsula on a very busy southbound traffic artery out of the downtown. I would be asking for a west facing room if I were staying there. The hotel is average and the neighborhood is good. If you are paying more than $125 for the room, you may care to look at bidding for a room on Priceline. You would select Downtown-Vancouver, 3.5*+ and start bidding at about $100. Rooms in hotels likely the Marriott, Renaissance, Hyatt Regency, Sutton Place, the Weston Hotels and even the Pan Pacific are often had at under $150. In most cases they will put you closer to a Canada Line station and certainly in a better hotel.

While your hotel is 8 blocks from a Skytrain station itself, you can get off at Vancouver City Centre, walk one block NW on Georgia St to Howe St, and then grab pretty much any bus (same ticket) along Howe St (which is one way) and get dropped in front of your hotel. #4,7,10,16 & 17 buses would all work.

Thanks Putterdude and Scottbee. That is such great info. I'm really looking forward to my cruise. When I booked I assumed it was only a one way Vancouver to San Diego. But later found out it was a 31 day Hawaii/Tahiti Cruise from San Diego. I guess you know who will be :D with envy when she gets off in San Diego. But I am looking forward to spending a day in Vancouver (precruise) and a day in San Deigo (post cruise). I'm from Georgia.

I see you're doing a transatlantic cruise in Nov. I'm doing a 14 days transatlantic next year, Barcelona to New Oleans. What is your itinerary? Love to get reviews when you get back.

Cruise arrives 0700 Canada Place on a Friday (Celebrity Millennium).

At what time can one reasonably expect to be ashore and thru' Customs etc ?

One hour ? Two ? Or ?

We're meeting someone and obviously want to give them a sensible estimate of the best time to show up.

Thanks

If you walk off yourself, 90 mins, if you're in a 'disembark group', and you didn't specify a time, probably 2½ hrs

If you can handle you own luggage and self-disembark you will likely be standing on the curb of Canada Place by 8:15 latest. If not, as you do not appear to have an early fight booked or a ship sponsored tour booked you will likely be one of the last groups disembarked so it could be 10:00 before you have picked up your luggage, cleared customs and are standing on the curb.

So if I/we handle our own luggage we can disembark at will ?

Sounds like a plan . .

Well not quite at will, they generally assign times for self-disembarking very soon after the ship ties up and is cleared by customs. At some point during your cruise you will be sent a questionnaire about your post cruise plans and then subsequently will be assigned a time slot. You can also often make arrangements at the Passenger Services Desk. People who self-disembark start leaving the ship between about 7:30 to 7:45.
