Sunday in Athens

We will be in Athens on a Sunday. We hoped to shop and eat in Plaka.

Will the stores and restaurants be closed?

We were in Athens on a Sunday just last month. Most of the shops, etc in the main city area appeared to be closed, but all shops and restaurants in the Plaka area were in full operation. This was just 2 or 3 days after the riots and bombings and there was plenty of evidence of the damage. However, the atmosphere in the Plaka area was great and definitly worth a visit.

The Plaka being open is the key thing in Athens!!! Lots of great food, beverage, shopping, music, etc., there. We stayed right near the Plaka and loved it all day long and in the evenings. The shops are open late, late in the evenings. It right next door to the Acropolis and other historic areas. Below are are a couple of visuals for this charming area.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Outdoor dining in the Plaka. Lots of music and fun, plus good food:

Yes and no. Great answer right?

I was in Athens 2 weeks ago on Sunday. You will find some shops, especially the ones dealing with religious items closed, but you will find most of the "tourist" type places open and doing a booming business. Early Sunday morning is a beautiful time to walk to the Acropolis and listen to the different churches sing the liturgy. The variations are beautiful and one thing that no one speaks of but that is something that is not to be missed if you can be there on Sunday morning.
