BosoxI Posted June 6, 2010 #3 Share Posted June 6, 2010 what is the most economical and convenient way to travel around venice? Your feet. It's a great city for walking. I'm in Mestre at this very moment as the hotels are much less expensive. I hop on the bus to Piazelle Roma and start hoofing it. It's a beautiful day, as it has been for much of the time I've been here. Vaporetti can be expensive.
kuldalai Posted June 6, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 6, 2010 Use the Vaporettos . They are a public waterbourne bus service that operate on several fixed routes . All signed. Caveat Emptor - there are two (2) types - "Diretto" means express stops and "Accellerato" means stops all landings. Half the fun of Venice is walking down the narrow streets and getting lost . You can cross the canals at any points where the alley is signed as Calle del Traghetto on a traghetti gondola for payment of 0.60 Euro p.p. (Traghetti are older gondolas operated by gondoliers that do don't want to do long trips; they just provide a cross canal service at many strategic points . ) You will need to mortgage your house to pay for an actual gondola ride, especially at night . chipmaster Posted June 6, 2010 #6 Share Posted June 6, 2010 Your feet, central venice is so walkable and really walking is the best way to discover / experience all the narrow passages, bridges etc. Unless one is interesting in going to one of the islands seperated from the main complex even the public water taxi bus isn't required. what is the most economical and convenient way to travel around venice? Earl Rosebery Posted June 6, 2010 #7 Share Posted June 6, 2010 what is the most economical and convenient way to travel around venice? Be sure to use both the Vaporettos and walking. There is no better way to experience the Grand Canal. Anytime you get tired of walking you just hop on. Also there are only 3 bridges over the Canal
aquilegia Posted June 6, 2010 #8 Share Posted June 6, 2010 If you want a cheap way of crossing the Grand Canal when you're not near a bridge, you can try a traghetto. These are gondolas which go to and fro across the canal for a small charge. The Venetians always stand up in them, but they have seats if you're balance isn't too good. It's by far the cheapest way of getting a ride in a gondola too!
ms.sunburn Posted June 6, 2010 #9 Share Posted June 6, 2010 I would have to say feet also. A one-way ride on the vaporetto is 6.50 euro and it isn't a pleasant ride if it's hot and the boat is packed.
