Smoking in staterooms

Wanna bet.

No need to bet...this is a tragic accident caused by someone's carelessness. It would be no less tragic if, say, the person overloaded a circuit or had an appliance with faulty wiring which caused the fire. The bottom line would still be that a building was burned down and folks were hurt. We all do stupid things sometimes - most of us are lucky because no one gets hurt. This is sadly not one of those instances.

We were very worried about this, and so before the cruise I telephoned Princess to inform them that we were allergic to cigarette smoke, which they noted in their records. We were pleasantly surprised that we rarely encountered the alarming scent of smoke on our Alaska cruise. Our room was completely free of any suggestion of smoke residue. The suggestion of smoke was present in just a few public areas, such as the Casino and two of the bars. I saw only a few people smoke.

The small number of smokers may have been due to the demographic of an Alaska cruise. I rather suspect that a European cruise may offer a different experience.

You people are all crazy. We all contribute to killing others. Whether it is by exhaust fumes from your vehicle, a smoke stack or cigarettes. By merely being on a cruise ship you are contributing pollution to the ozone. Which everyone knows causes athsma and death. So really get off of your high horses and face reality. None of you are better or less guilty than smokers.

I am also allergic to cigarette/cigar smoke. Have never smelled smoke in our cabin. However on our recent med cruise I was only able to use my balcony (which cost an additional $2000/per room) for about 30 minutes the entire 12 day cruise due to smoking on the balcony next door. When talking to someone in customer relations regarding another issue after the cruise, she asked if I had any other comments or problems. I told her how unhappy I was to have paid so much additional for a balcony only to find I could not use it due to smoke. She said that Princess was aware of the problem & was trying to decide what to do that would be fair to smokers & non-smokers. When I mentioned that I was surprised smoking was still allowed on balconies after the fire on one of their ships caused by someone smoking on the balcony. She told me the fire was NOT caused by a passenger smoking on the balcony. . My other issue was resolved.

Why doesn't Princess do what hotels do...offer smoking and non smoking rooms...First come first served. Put all the smoking rooms with balconies together, non smoking together, for each deck....if you are late in reserving your room, then you will have to either smoke in designated areas if your a smoker in a non smoking room, or live among the smokers if your a non smoker in a smoking room. Seems like a simple solution, but I'm sure it's much more complicated than that. Where I live they have banned smoking in indoor public places, so I have gotten used to it. However, this weekend I was reminded of how it used to be when you could smoke in bars and restaurants, and it didn't really bother me, except that I had to wash my hair everyday cause it was smelly!:)

I wash my hair everyday anyway.

When I straight iron my hair, I can go for 2 days, cause it's thick and hard to keep straight....I have VERY curly hair! When I wear it curly, I have to wash it every day anyway! Although, that really wasn't the point....

She basically lied to you then. Here is the full report on the fire. It takes a while to load. It states in part,

"It was probably caused by a disgarded cigarette..."

I read the article. Wow. The probable source of the fire was a discarded cigarette, and given the time of day, it sure seems likely that someone smoked on the balcony and then tossed the butt "overboard".

It is surprising that cigarette smoking is allowed anywhere except in designated safe areas on board ship. Is Princess' concern that smokers will take their business to a competing cruise line if they are not allowed to smoke in their rooms and on their balconies? Princess is headquartered in southern California where smoking has been banned from restaurants, bars and office buildings for many years, with no noticeable economic downside. So what's the explanation?

We have experienced cabins that smelled of smoke and have complained to Princess about it. After complaining, it is obvious that they are not proactive on this issue even though airlines, hotels, resorts, and other cruise lines are being more restrictive. In the mean time we are no longer risking our money and time with Princess and I know of others doing the same. I find it disappointing as Princess does a nice job, but they sure are missing out on this.

The explantaion is that if you live in California and want to smoke in a restaurant, then you have to leave the entire state as there is no alternative restaurant to go to within CALIF (which stands for Come And Live In Florida).

However, in almost every port that Princess sails from in the USA, there are alternative ships to take if for some reason you do not want to be on Princess.

Figured that remark from a smoker but the answer to your statement highlighted above is:

Oh yes we are!!!

Ciao for now!!!

If you read many of the posts on Cruise Critics, you see that

o Some people want a cabin on the starboard side

o Some people want a cabin on the port side

o Some people want a cabin far forward

o Some people want a cabin only aft

And you think that adding smoking/non-smoking to this list can result in anyone being happy?

Maybe smokers could just be in a ship's tender being towed by the ship.

But when I'm forced to breath cigarette smoke on my balcony it's not quite the same. I've never smelled stale smoke stack fumes in my stateroom.

Wow, would that idea even increase future cruise bookings for those rooms.

(and probably kill sales once they were filled.)

Sadly this is true...almost everything we do these days puts us in danger. Radiation from cell phones constantly in use, exhaust from our cars, the cleaning products we use in our homes, the pesticides we use on our lawns and crops, etc. etc.

I am a smoker but I have never never smoked in my stateroom and refrain from doing so even on the balcony in respect for others. I try to always go only where smoking is allowed on the ship. Even though I am a smoker I do not enjoy the smell it leaves in an enclosed space (yes sometime I will quit) but for now I think smoker's (me included) should be more sensitive to people who dont smoke

I wish I knew that Princess was more of a smoking allowed ship before I book a cruise for September. Smoking is not a good thing.....and I would have preferred a cruiseline that is more health conscience for its passengers and crew. If you could have seen what our family saw with my step-mom recently when she had lung Cancer..... PRINCESS get with the times........limit smoking on your ships!!!!

I think the employees of Princess (and other companies) are scripted to say certain things to not ire passengers or a group of passengers. We inquired about a noroviru outbreak on a cruise once....you could tell they were told not to say anything about it at all. Also had a time when there was this noise from under the floor in out room that started at about 3 AM -- lasted throughout the morning. It was so intense it shook the room. They kept saying they didn't know what it was and never heard a complaint about it before. One morning, about 3 AM, the entire row of cabins, inside and balconies, was affected. There were about 20 pax that came out into the hallway to find out what it was. We called the house keeping manager to hear the noise....it suddenly stopped....oh, until about an hour after he left....started right back up again. Come to find out from someone that worked onboard (it was their last cruise on their contract) that it was the room service gallery below and there is a complaint about it on every cruise -- worst in the room that we occupied. OK, if one of the crew heard about it, then I am sure the hotel manager heard about it before as well. So did the staff at the purser's desk....but they are told to play dumb.

We were relocated .... much to the dismay of our current room steward. He was rather irritated with us ... probably irritated he was stuck with that row of rooms. Most likely happened to him several times.

Sorry if I hijacked this post....just wanted to comment on the fact that the staff do tell you what they are told to tell you ....seems like this is one more instance of that.

so that's an exageration by non smokers. If you are eating on your balcony, it would have been easier to ask your neighbor to refrain for a half hour so you can enjoy your meal. Most smokers are respectful of others and would comply. I am sure no non smoker lives on their balcony 24/7 as well. And maybe you might refrain from wearing too much perfume while out their as well. Maybe they need the smoke to offset the fumes from your cabin?

I can't believe this thread is still going. Everyone keeps saying the same things over and over, with some being very nasty. If you have a complaint about the Princess policy then by all means tell Princess. Complaining on these boards will not change anything. We all cruise to have fun, not change the world.

Yes I smoke! I get tired of hearing "I am going to die and my unhealthy, dirty, smelly, disgusting habit is offending to you", while you stuff yourself with chocolate, pastries, and food, food and more food. I wouldn't dream of telling you to stop eating and lose weight because it is unhealthy.

Let's just enjoy our cruises together and chill out and stop preaching.

Perhaps no single person smokes 24/7, but a large family group that ALL smoke can certainly come close. I admit that I never went out on my balcony at 3 AM to see if anyone was smoking, but I didn't want to be out there then. As for asking them to refrain, they were foreign and I never once heard them speak English either. Perhaps they would have understood me if I asked, but I got the impression that they would have been very insulted. Then again, maybe they could hear me sneezing and coughing and telling my husband that he could stay out if he wanted, but that I needed to go in because the smoke was bothering me, but they never offered to quit smoking.

As for perfume, I don't wear that either! I have ALLERGIES! A lot of things bother me. I hate the reeking perfume just as much (probably more!) than you do. It keeps me from enjoying seats in the theater or lounges.

People without allergies/asthma really don't seem to understand the issues faced by those who do!

Scripted? Good point, it probably is. In one of our ports, a paramedic team with stretcher raced onto the ship and grabbed an elevator. We asked a crew member what had happened, and he replied that they were just taking supplies to the medical clinic.

Airlines do this too. For instance, I've learned that on Alaska Airlines, the announcement that they are just waiting on some paperwork could mean anything up to and including an engine failure which will require cancellation of the flight.
