Traveller's Cheques

Recommended Posts

Hi

Wonder if you can help me plese, having a dumb moment and nothing I read is making any sense.

We are sailing on Indi around the Med. If we bring Travellers cheques to have as a back up for in port spending, do they need to be in USD or Euros?

this is what it says on RC site, but not too sure?

Foreign Currency and Traveller's Cheques:

  • Guests cannot exchange more than USD 1000 in traveller's cheques and foreign currency per day.
  • Guests can only exchange foreign currency and traveller's cheques for cash at the Guest Relations or Guest Services Desk.
  • Guests can only exchange foreign currency and traveller's cheques for chips and tokens in the Casino.

Many thanks in advance

Amanda

They only accept US$ travellers cheques on board.

Personally I don't really thing TC are that userfriendly any more - you will have a hard time trying to find a bank in ports that cash them, and then you will need a supply of € TCs........why not just use your credit card and ATM card if you need to get out extra cash???

We have been to Europe on several cruises. I take about $500 in US travelers checks for emergencies. You can cash them on the ship for Euros (usually at a poor exchange rate.) If I don't use them, I just bring them home. I use my ATM card in the ports to withdraw enough Euros for that port and maybe the next one. My Credit Union does not charge me for 5 ATM uses per month. My bank charges me A LOT for each foreign ATM usage. I try to "spend down" the Euros and only bring enough home to get me a taxi from the airport to my hotel the NEXT time I visit Europe. That way, I have a "good" reason to go again.

Thank you for your replies, I will deffinately be bringing Euros(cash) with us, it was just for any extras, trying to weigh up the T cheques vs the charge for using the ATMs in ports. Gives me something to think about

Thanks again

FYI Santander are doing a commission free for foreign currency credit card. M&S accept Euros I believe! ;)

Remember. If you bring home Euro coins the companies here many will not turn them back into US $, so spend the coins at the end of your trip so you do not get stuck with them

OP is in the UK :)
