Danger in Cabo?

A friend got back from Cabo in May and said there were places they couldn't go and were escorted by armed men:confused: around town. Not only do we have a cruise coming up, but we have a timeshare in Cabo. We have NEVER had problems with safety there. Has anyone been recently? :o

That sounds a bit strange. I was just there in February and everything was fine. I've cruised to Cabo 8 times and never felt unsafe. Like most Mexican cities you will see people in uniform patrolling. Wonder where these people you are referring to went in Cabo where they had to be escorted. Can't imagine?

It's been a couple of years since we were last in Cabo, but over the years have repeatedly travelled to most of the major tourist cities in Mexico without incident.

Never heard or saw any special problems in Cabo. (or other MR ports).

I spend a month in Cabo every year (2, 2 week trips) and I have never seen this at all. I have very good friends who live there that I chat with on a daily basis. Go over to www.tripadvisor.com and check out the Cabo board. It is very active with both tourists and lots of people who live there. Believe me, if anything like that were happening, we would know about it.

We were there in April...felt completely safe. Of all the ports in Mexico Riveria, Cabos feel the safest to us.

Yeah, no problems at all with the ports on the Mexican Riviera itineraries for 7-day trips. The minute something happens it will certainly be posted here on CruiseCritic.

Now in Mazatlan, there are always armed men at the pier. The first time I saw them I wondered if they had bad crime in ports and I wondered if I should get off the ship. But they are there everytime I go so I don't feel unsafe in any way.

 

Weird that I don't see this in Cabo or Puerto Vallarta but I see them everytime in Mazatlan.

Well there was a report on TA (Trip Advisor) that a man was stabbed in Cabo, he is listed in crititcal condition had to be medivac to San Diego. This is a hot topic on Trip Advisor. So if you want further information I suggest you go there to find out more information (the forum section). To all that say Cabo is safe, it may be, but like in all places in the world, keep your wits about you when visiting foreign countries.

I agree with this. That is why DH and I never wander off the beaten path. We usually either stay near the ship or take ship excursions because we are in a foreign country where we have no rights.

That is true. But my local paper had way more than 1 stabbing victim just for the last weekend and I still live here and go outside everyday. Crime happens everywhere. We still don't have the whole story on the Cabo incident- it was not reported in the news anywhere, just by the victims sister in law who wasn't even there. Not saying that they were in the wrong place or doing anything wrong but until we get more details (we have several members that live in Cabo and are working on it) we don't know exactly what happened.

In June we were told by a local resident that the security in Mazatlan has been increased. Mazatlan is a major shipping center for Mexico and the government wants to take no chances on any problems at the port or for the tourism industry. We have never had any problems in Cabo San Lucas during any of our several trips there (both land and cruise), but as has been stated on these boards several times, we are smart and careful. Just as there are parts of the town/city where you live where you would be more alert/on guard, I am sure there are those sections of Cabo.We just don't go there.

 

Tourism on the MR is a major source of income and the Mexican government will do whatever they can to ensure the safety in those areas. It is incumbent on tourists to be smart and not take unneccesary risks.

I hear what you are saying Houshunter, just this last weekend, there were gunshots fired in my neighborhood where it is a very peaceful place, here in So. Cal., so violence happens everywhere. I'm just saying the OP asked a question about Cabo's safety. I know that you are on the Trip Advisor forum and have many, many friends there that live and travel to Cabo. While you may say Cabo is safe, and I happen to love Cabo, it's not prudent to say it's a "safe" place. Something happened there last week and it is being covered up. In fact, there are rumors that there were additional crimes (stabbings) that have gone unreported and are just coming to light. This recent crime that occured will come out as the Cabo Angels are now involved, hopefully they will find out more information, and if they do, they will provide this information publicly. I don't expect people to stay away from beautiful Cabo, but they do need to be aware of the happenings there and yes, the corruptness that seems to be happening when violence occurs against American citizens and it is not reported.

Why is it that almost every single story coming out about the dangers in Mexico and *be careful, it is a scary place* usually involves men usually young but immaturity certainly has no age limit, late at night and usually drinking......My inital thoughts was there is more to this story then what has been told, maybe just maybe a drug deal(however small) gone bad?? First thing I thought of was that. I know most of our late night stabbings usually include, drinking, drugs and men.

No need to get all upity, like I said, I love Cabo and visit there all the time on land based vacations. First off, this crime did happen. I feel that this crime raises a lot of questions that needs answers. Why wasn't it reported in the paper, the police are taking their time in releasing the information to the proper authorities, the hospital and doctors that treated the victim are takign their time releasing information, etc. I'm not going to jump to conclusions that just because they were young men that drugs were involved as your initial thoughts seem to be. Yes, most crimes do happen at night, as this one did. So, I wouldn't worry about day tours while visiting Cabo, but I sure would be vigilint when I'm out and about at night the next time I visit Cabo.

I am not disagreeing with you. I was just pointing out that there is probably just as much if not more violent crimes in our own towns than in Cabo and we aren't changing anything we do at home. Be careful everywhere you do, including the grocery store in your town.

One thing I do know is that Mexico can move very slowly and what might seem to us as a cover up is merely Mexican time, no matter that the victim wants justice or answers now, it is going to be slower happening in Mexico <------ think I said that right

 

I was not jumping to conclusions just thinking/wondering/posting out loud. Sometimes these posts would be better in person.....:o...so we can see and hear the other poster, sometimes I reread my posts and think...ohh I didn't mean for it to sound like that.

 

We are vigilint and try to be aware of our surroundings and the people near by a no matter what, no matter where we are, Victoria, PV, Disneyland area.

Exactly! I live here in Cabo and as a single female from the states I have never felt safer anywhere else in the world. I walk everywhere even at night. The "armed guards" are the guys from the marine base walking either around the marina sidewalk or at the tender pier...reason being both are federal property and they are the federal marine police. They are the ones that have jurisdiction. Simple. They are like the armed policemen at all US airports. No worries.
