luvs2travl Posted July 31, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 31, 2010 Spirit Airlines is starting to charge for carry-on bags today, July31, 2010 according to the AP. Here is the link (I hope it works!): http://www.yahoo.com/_ylt=AiOYq33GI6Il1zI28x6fOLCbvZx4/SIG=15p8qknve/EXP=1280702121/**http%3A//us.rd.yahoo.com/finance/news/rss/story/*http%3A//us.rd.yahoo.com/finance/news/topfinstories/*http%3A//biz.yahoo.com/ap/100731/apfn_us_spirit_carry_on_fee.html Fee will be $30.00 (if paid in advance to boarding) per bag needing to be stored in the overhead bin or $45.00 per bag if paid at boarding. Guess the next step will be charging to use the restroom.
mindydaile Posted August 1, 2010 #2 Share Posted August 1, 2010 Unfortunately it wasn't hard to see this coming. Once they started charging for checked bags people were trying to carry on everything but the kitchen sink to get around the fees.
mnport Posted August 1, 2010 #3 Share Posted August 1, 2010 There should be a higher charge for carry-ons then checked baggage. Anyone using the overhead should be charged double the checked baggage fee and it would be easier to board an airplane.

You mean like Rynair, (Irish charter airline), is going to do, by retrofitting the doors to the lavatories, (to accept Euro coins for entrance)? (Next will a charge for water & soft drinks, along with the free salty snacks being withdrawn to save $$$)! Rare TracieABD Posted August 1, 2010 #6 Share Posted August 1, 2010 Thank you for the link. I wish the article mentioned how much the fee was for a checked bag...

Apparently Ryanair shelved that idea when their bean counters worked out that that with the cost of ripping out a restroom and replacing it with seats, which was the goal, was not cost effective i.e. it would cost more than the revenue generated from the extra seats. Also reported was that revenue from on board beverage sales would fall dramatically if they charged for the remaining restrooms!
Rare 3rdGenCunarder Posted August 1, 2010 #8 Share Posted August 1, 2010 I want to see how they're going to supervise this new policy. Will someone stand in the aisle checking to see if you have a "paid" tag on your carry-on? Will they look at the carry-ons as you pass through the jetway? I don't see anyone doing that now, which is how so many oversized bags get into the cabin in the first place. If people would stick to the regulation size that fits into the bind end-on, boarding and stowing carry-ons would not be so bad. Most bins are designed to hold 3 regulation bags. If a bag takes up more than 1/3 of a bin, the flight attendents should pull it out and gate-check it.
