Vancouver liguor prices

How do the prices for bottles of liquor in Vancouver compare to the US? Thanks so much.

I don't know Virginia prices but in BC Liquor stores a typical bottle of liquor in a 1.14 lt size will start at about $35 and go up from there...I buy and average priced vodka, Canadian rye whiskey, and Scotch and pay about $38 to $40 a bottle. In AZ I pay as little as $8.88 for a 1.75 lt botle of vodka and suffer sticker shock each spring when I come home. My advice would bring a bottle with you, which you can do duty free.:)

This is pretty well bang on from what I remember. Virtually all liquor sold in Vancouver is from Government operated / controlled stores (the BC LDB) www.BCLiquorStores.com (prices are listed).

There are now a number of privately run liquor stores in BC which are often convenient. However as all alcohol is controlled by the Liquor Distribution Branch of the Province of BC, they make pretty sure that private store prices are higher than theirs. The government hates competition.:eek:

The canadian government puts over 300% tax on booze. A 1.75 ml bottle of canadian Black Velvet costs 12.99 at Albersons here in Lakeside, Ca but costs 54 bucks (US) in Vancouver BC. If I lived in canadia (notice no cap) I would be moonshining with a shotgun handy...

 

Consider the facts a 1.75 ml bottle sold at Albersons market at 12.99, they run a volumn business so they have a small markup...maybe 30% and Ca. sales tax 8.75% and US Federal tax ?(don't have that figure)...Bottom line Black Velvet Co. probable sells for 7 bucks and the canadian crooks add 48 bucks of graft to that...

most of those taxes pay for our Universal Medical:D I happily pay those taxes so I don't have the huge cost of medical premiums that most Americans have................. or better yet I have medical

Canadian taxes and US taxes are collected differently. For example, we have no death taxes and no gambling taxes in Canada. When you win the $50 million dollar lottery ticket in Canada, you get a cheque for $50 million dollars and no tax bill. The total tax burden for Canadians is not very different than the total tax and insurance burden that you have in the US... except that until the current government, we were running a financial surplus.

 

Sin taxes, alcohol and cigarette are a voluntary contribution to the tax system. You don't have to smoke or to drink. You can't compare our alcohol prices to your alcohol prices.... just like you can't compare our water tax to your water tax... here in Montreal, we have no water tax... it might just be because we have no water meters...

Of course they do. Lots of people complain about Canadian taxes on airfares, where in fact there is more US levied tax on a Vancouver-Seattle-Vancouver ticket, than there is Canadian.

I live for about 5 mos a year in AZ where I can buy Gordon's vodka for $8.88 and Black Velvet for under $13 when on sale and decent CA wines for under $6 .... but I would much rather have my heart attack in Canada. I was hospitalized in AZ about 3 years ago for 2.5 days and my (the insurance company's) bill ran over $35K.

Unfortunately, our Canadian government taxes the living daylights out of any alcoholic beverages (wine, spirits, etc) especially in BC with the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) now.

Within pennies of what you pay in Vancouver, but we don't have PST or HST added on. I spent a whack of $ in Kelowna the past few days and need to see if I can get part of the HST refunded as we used to be able to do with your PST.

Doesn't everyone use Metric; even most of US industry (all cars are metric these days)

 

We also take holidays in Cuba (you can fly Vancouver-Cuba non-stop; but there are no flights to Florida)

FYI - before the HST was brought in it was 5% GST + 10% Liquor Tax = 15%

 

Previously small business owners had two sets of paper work to fill out and two different cheques to sent to two different governments - now it is one set of paper work and one cheque.

 

It is now 12% - however the government chose to raise the prices to make up the lost revenue.

 

I plea guilty to trying to have some fun and yes I took your advice and took a four hour harbour cruise up Indian arm today.

 

Humour and colour are not misspelled - that is how Canadians spell them.
