Buying Cigarettes on the Conquest - Please respond

Hi All -

I'm wondering if I should buy a carton of cigarettes before I leave on Sunday, or if I can buy them on the boat? I know they keep the liquor tagged and stored until you get home, but what about cigarettes?

Also, does anyone have any idea what the current cost is (duty free of course:)) and the limits?

One last thing - I know I shouldn't smoke, I know I'd save money not smoking, I know I'm putting the nails in the coffin, I know, I know, I know. So please, if you're not answering the question and just wanting to tell me to quit smoking, go to another post. Believe it or not, smokers are aware of all of this.

Thanks!!

You can purchase them and take them to your cabin.

As for prices... I don't have a clue. I've never heard of a limit on the purchases of cigarettes so I suspect that the $800 duty free purchase limit would be it...

The selection is limited and you are suppose to only bring off 1 carton per passenger over 18. I don't know if the enforce it, since some luggage goes outside your door the night before. Then you could have some in your carry on. They are approx. 2 cartons for about 54.00 or a 5 carton box for about 110.00. CHEAP, CHEAP...CHEAP!

Cigarettes can be purchased and taken with you. There's a 1 carton allowed under Duty Free on your return (except for US Virgin Islands where it's 1 carton + 4 cartons made in US Virgin Islands).

You can buy as many cartons on board as you want. In March the prices were around $25 per carton for Camel or Malboro or you could get 5 cartons for around $100 (package deal). I believe the limit is 1 carton per person when disembarking, unless you visited the Virgin Islands then you are allowed more.

Hope that helps!

In February on the Conquest I got 2 cartons of Marlboro's for $49. You are supposed to be limited to 1 carton pp over 18, but I saw people @ the customs area with more than that. The people in front of us had something like 6 cartons - they did put them on the declaration form but weren't required to pay any extra tax. YMMV though! :D

One thing though, I smoke Marlboro Menthol Light 100's (Gold Pack, whatever!) and they didn't have the 100's, so I had to get shorts. Just an FYI.

We were on the Conquest for New Years cruise 08/09. Bought 2 cartons Marlboro Lights short for $39.95, but they were made in Switzerland and not the US. Gave me a terible headache and cough. I always buy mine in the US before I cruise. I did buy 5 cartons in Barbados for

$55.00 but gave them to my sons and they did not bother them. This was on another cruise.

Check the box. They are the real deal if they are made in Richmond, Virgina by Phillip Morris USA.

We always bring back four cartons. We just put them in our suitcase and forget about them. Never had a problem on two cruises on the Conquest and plan to do the same back on the Conquest in a couple of weeks..

Thanks all!! I guess I'll save my money and buy the ones on board (instead of paying 5.50 a pack here!).

Thanks again!!

You will save even more money if you say no to smokes, let alone add years to your life, and save on insurance and medical bills. Should I say more?

Apparently you shouldn't have said anything...

If you are going to St. Thomas, there is a duty free smoke shop in the mall right off the ship. We paid $20 a carton and bought 10 cartons. You are allowed 5 cartons each. Put them in the suitcase for the return home with no problem. Even bought a few more cartons at the airport and carried them on the plane. $70 a carton here. Great savings for us.

Last summer someone purchased 10 cartons and was concerned about the 1 carton limit. The US Customs official was at the boarding gate in Dublin (none in Boston) and in a jolly good mood and wondered if we had busted the casino in Monte Carlo, and that was the only question asked. He put our passport in a bar code reader and wished us a pleasant flight. Nothing ventured, nothing lost.

I will stand corrected, but I was always told each passenger was allowed 200 cigarettes (one carton) each to be taken off the ship.

There always has to be at least one . . . .

Yep. It's always amazing to me how everyone is so up in arms about smoking (and yes I know it's bad), but are the first ones to usually tell you how they drank until they passed out - not saying that this person does that.

I have no idea what the cost is, but I do know that they are not held by the ship.

The duty limit is 200 cigarettes. You cannot pay a duty and bring in more. If customs finds extras, they are supposed to destroy them. Do they do that? I have no idea, I am just conveying what the rules say.

Is that the same with alcohol?? I thought if you brought in extra you pay the duty:confused:

I know on our custom form it says 1ltr of booze or 200 smokes.. I dont remember reading that you can't bring anymore that that and not be able to pay duty??
