Smoking On Starboard Side Only?

Recommended Posts

aldewitt - I prefer to think that smokers have the right to kill themselves by smoking - I just wish they would do it before they procreate.....kind of a "natural selection" thing, you know? :D

I know your kidding, but both of my parents were smokers which I believe is one reason I am such an anti-smoking activist. Wish they both had lived to see my daughter's wedding last April. He should have been 80 and her 74.

I don't smoke but I work where smoking is allowed in the workplace( one of the few in the state). Smoke at work does not bother me. Dw smokes and I make her go outside at home. On the cruise she smokes on the bal and I sit out with her and the smoke is barely smelt. The one place where smoke bothers me is driving on a nice day windows down and stop at a red light and the smoke from the car next to me blows in my car, I hate it.

And - if there's a smoker in a non-smoking section, I'll be the first one to get a staff member to stop it, post-haste.

Yes, I was kidding. Many people are great at convincing themselves that their "habit" isn't killing them.

In a couple of days I'll be attending the funeral of a relative with a different "habit" that killed her - she ate herself to death. 45 years old and so massively obese that she could barely move herself around, she had a massive stroke/heart attack. Left behind a 20yo son who is also very overweight and probably headed for the same fate.

We only get one body, folks - take care of it!

Because people smoking outside on decks below or above you will have absolutley no chance of their smoke reaching your area. zero, zilch, nada.

Quoted from a smoker I am sure. I have smelled it on my balcony. I can smell in on smokers (after smoking) when the pass by. Smokers are oblivious to the strength of the order. Just sayin.

I want to thank the person originally posing a legitimate question. As to turning this into another "all smokers should die soon" thread, there are plenty of threads. Yes, I smoke and when someone is out on the balcony next to me, I don't smoke. If the smokers are courteous and considerate and obey all the rules, laws and regulations, why do you have to be so judgemental, even it's politically ok to be as nasty and overzealous as possible? This doesn't require answers or responses, in fact, please don't...but I know some will.

I am fairly strong anti-smoker who prefers smoking be limited to certain areas.

But, I will say the only time I have had an issue with smelling smoke on our balcony was when someone in a nearby cabin was puffing on a Cigar. I don't know if it has been luck but I haven't had balcony problems because of smoke.

We had our first balcony last year and smoking was an issue for us. Someone said get a cabin forward and it wont bother when underway. Wrong. The wind brought the smoke from the aft cabin right next door right into our balcony and cabin. I think that they should make balcony cabins starbord smoking, port, non just like the public areas. We did get some very nice time on the balcony without dealing with the neighbors smoking and it was very enjoyable. Their schedule was different than ours so it worked out. We just closed the door and didnt go out if they were out there.

We all need to realize not everyone has the same tolerances, experiences, etc as everyone else and be understanding of those differences.

Sorry, but I refuse to go through life worrying about everyone else's sensativities. I take offence to some of the overly obnocious posters on these boards. Do I whine about it? No. I just avoid them.

We are taking this "tolerance" thing way to far!

This was my post...not "all smokers should die" quoted later as if that was my post. While he's unable to articulate on his own, it makes my point about some of the the people who respond.

Hello Sandinmypants,

I think if you have a problem with a neighbor smoking on their balcony you should just explain the situation with your son and try to work out an arrangement with them (like only smoking when you and your fam. are not out on your balcony) just be nice and understanding of their situation (they want to smoke and are on vacation as well). Without you telling them they don't know the reason for our request. They may be more receptive than you think (well if they are human they should be). I am in law enforcement and I have found that most people just need to know the reason behind a request to stop doing something. Without a reason they just think you are trying to give them a hard time.

My partner and I are both smokers and we tried to only smoke on our balcony if the ship was moving. If we were in port I would look over on both sides to see if anyone was out on their balcony before lighting up. If our neighbor had requested that we not smoke out there when they were out and were polite about it I would have honored their request, no questions asked.

Sorry this is so long....this seems to happen everytime I post on here.

Absolutely agree with Squirrel Patrol (and I'm very curious as to your "name"). I smoke, thus reserve a balcony cabin. It doesn't mean that I'm not sensitive to the fact that some people can't tolerate cigartte smoke. Being curteous goes a long way, on both sides.

I'm a Park Ranger and when I was at the police academy they called us squirrel patrol

We had a balcony on deck 7, starboard just aft of the centrum elevators. The problem we noted is there is a covering for the lifeboats which are above deck 4. While we did not smell smoke strictly speaking, we did notice when the breeze was slight, a very stale odor from the ashtrays. Seemed like they were allowed to accumulate for sometime. This is not the case if your stateroom is in the forward section of the ship, in other words forward of the forward elevators.

Maybe it was that particular sailing? We did a transatlantic (14 days) in a deck 7 hump cabin on the starboard side and had absolutely no problems with tobacco odors. We used the promenade on deck 4 in the late evening when there were very few if any smokers there and there were no dirty ashtrays.

You are obviously very tolerant of smoke. For those that are highly senstive yes you can smell it from that far away.

My daughter is very sensitive to smoke. She could smell when someone 2 decks below us and about 10 cabins over lit up a cigarette. She commented on smelling it, I told her she was nuts. She looked around for a second then pointed to appropriate balcony. So to some it is nada to others it is a big deal.

We all need to realize not everyone has the same tolerances, experiences, etc as everyone else and be understanding of those differences.

Hi akcruz - I have the same problem as your daughter if not worse (not making light of her situation at all). I have it so bad that one time, I was in a casino and exposed to smoke and when I went home, showered, etc. I could smell smoke for days! No one could understand this, thought I was looney. I think it went into my sensory glands somehow and remained in memory or something for a period of a week or so! I was cleaning my nostrils, everything, but the "smell" remained.

I'm nervous about or upcoming cruise (1st time) and was looking forward to time on our balcony (eating, lounging, etc.) and just hope we'll get lucky and not be bothered by any smoke.

If I walk by smokers outside a mall our office buidling, I have to walk quickly and hold my breath.

Our cruise is Oasis of the Seas, but I reallly wanted to reply that your post caught my attention and it's nice to hear that others do understand.
