Oceana in Oct

Smart jeans ARE acceptable on smart casual nights, and the P&O brochure makes this absolutely clear. Indeed, they are worn by many people.

I quote from the latest P&O brochure, as regards Smart Casual dress.

"Smart dark denim is also fine, but not trainers, football shirts or tracksuits"

I wish some people would confine themselves to the facts, and not substitute their own prejudices for them.

Hi. My family and I are going on the same cruise. This is our first one too. We have had the same questions as your asking. We decided to book trips to Rome and Florence because it is safer and no chance of missing the ship. My daughter wants to take her dark jeans and I think they should be ok.

Hi

we will be cruising on Oceana for the first time ever in Oct and will get married on borad. Could someone answere a few questions pls:

1. the shore excursions provided by P&O seem quite expensive. Do they provide value for money? If not what would you recommend?

2. Are the currency exchange rates on board competitve or should we take euros with us?

3. Are blue jeans acceptable on smart casual nights?

4. Are there discount packages available for drinks on board?

Thanks very much for your help

Wow..... getting married on board, thats amazing. Where will the wedding take place and who does the ceremony. Please post some photo's when you get back.:D

Smart DARK Denim is dark blue or black jeans then as someone said.... so whats wrong with that?, cowboy blue work/type denim is rarely seen in the evenings...

You must be very experienced by now Any last minute advice? It is very close now.

We definitely should meet up. see you shortly

You can't miss us my daughter & her future husband are both in wheelchairs they will be racing around the deck

Have you printed your boarding passes

booked your car parking

Get some euro's before you go to get the best rate (if you work in London the little arcade opposite Victoria Station does a really good rate)

Don't forget your health card as well as your travel insurance.

Carry the wedding dress on yourself

Have you booked the restaurant for your wedding day

As for shore trips well you can do Rome by train for a few euro's but I think a trip like Rome with lunch would be a good investment :)

Gib is just walk off the ship around half a mile and you are in town

Pizza is a better trip than Florence unless you like statues

If you want to go up the tower prebook on line all tickets are timed or if you are going to give them both a miss then there is a boat trip around Lavorno

Barcelona is not to far to walk to Las Ramblers dependant on where we bearth or jump on the bus be careful there are a lot of pickpockets around mostly in the evening. I know a good bar for lunch ;) I will tell you how to find it onboard or it will be packed

Monti Carlo again depends on where they drop us, If we are lucky it's climb about 80 steps or a bus ride to the casino it's shut during the day, a coffee at the cafe next door it's expensive but hey think of the photo's ;)

Even if she feels out of place wearing them for dinner she will wear them ashore so don't worry be comfortable with yourself

Every cruise is different I have been on several back to backs and with the change of passengers the whole atmoshere can change for the better on my last cruise :D

After all we decided to go for:

Gibraltar - Secrets of the rock

Rome - Rome on your own (dont want to miss the train:) )

Florence&Pisa - again On your own (want to make the most of it)

and finally Saville On your own.

Will do the rest ourselves or anyone who wants to join us:)

Spartan Kent, your daughter's pic is great. Her special day couldnt have been any more special. Im just wondering how i could carry my wedding dress on the plane but i think i have to put it into my suitcase:( Well, will think about that.

What area are you coming from? :)

Update on time it's 3.30pm drinks are at 3.00 just to steady the nerves ;)

The trips sound fine you should enjoy them what dining option have you taken?

Don't forget to take some £ for tips normally the cabin steward and the waiter. If you look in the brochure it gives the recommended amounts you will get envelopes delivered to your cabin on the last night.

The amount is up to you, drinks have the tip added as a % a few £1.00 coins are very handy if you use room service ;)

Watch out for Spanish VAT some ships charge it if you make an onboard purchase when in a Spanish port I don't know if Oceana does as the embarkation port is Southampton

but you will soon find out when you buy a drink when you get back onboard or go to the shop just check your reciept ;)

No % tip charged on Oceana for drinks.

But, yes tax charged for purchases while in Spanish ports.

..... on some ships the Staff Captain does renewals

Interestingly (?) on our last two P&O cruises, both Captains very carefully referred to this other position as 'the Deputy Captain'. This was on Ventura in May and Arcadia earlier this month.

Call it what you like, one is in charge of the ship the other is a hotel manager.

I have already had one daughter married at sea and we have done the renewals package three times and will do it again next year for our 30th

It's like calling a vacum cleaner a hover

I thought the Executive Purser was the 'Hotel Manager'?

The Deputy Captain is much more than that surely? He's in charge of the whole ship when the Captain is busy marrying people for starters , and he 'drives the ship' on the bridge when the Captain is busy with all that he has to do....

The Captain and Deputy Captain both have the same qualifications. The Deputy Captain is the same as Staff Captain. They both will have years and years of expertise and knowledge. Many starting as deck hands or junior officers. Both are highley qualified.

The Hotel Manager is responsible for the "Hotel" e.g. food, beverage housekeeping. The same as anyother Hotel Manager.
