Fan Confiscated - Carnival still hasn't properly informed all of thier own!

We have not yet been to Roatan. We did have the Legend booked (going there) for next month. I decided to take my office staff on a longer cruise. Oddly, only ONE person decided to take the FREE cruise offer, so I am letting her go - and the rest of us WILL WORK! ;) :D

If I had ever worked in a place that offered a free cruise (this would be their 4th) I would have jumped through hoops to go! Different strokes... some said it was "too long", or that they would rather take the (unplanned) week off to go visit family, etc....

Tom

Can I come work for you? What a great boss you are!;):):)

BTW (contrary to popular belief on here) Host Mach is not the voice of Carnival... then again, oftentimes, neither is Carnival!

Tom

Well, he looked into it.

Now you know how I felt when the same pair of scissors I always brought was suddenly a weapon this year.

If I was going to stab someone, I might sneak the steak knife out of the MDR not try it with my scissors.

Don't you love that logic? On our Century cruise in April Cheryl's carry on bag was flagged by the x-ray guy. We were taken over to a table where a guy searched it. Found nothing, and sent it back though the machine empty. Back to the table, and he reached down in a seam/crevice and pulled out a small corkscrew (like the ones delivered with wine baskets on Carnival). It was confiscated as a potential weapon and tagged (we were told we could pick it up after the cruise, like we were that worried about it).

Guess what was in our cabin when we arrived, right next to a bottle of wine? You guessed it - one of their corkscrews with a complementary bottle of wine... which was entirely coincidental and had nothing to do with the x-ray event.

I then started to plan my ship takeover, as I now had my first deadly weapon in hand...

Hi Linda!

Interestingly enough, when all this started with Carnival earlier this year, I started THIS thread on the Celebrity board (and one on NCL as well). Apparently nobody has had any problems on those lines... we certainly have not!

The cruise itself was OK.

Dining room: great service and wait staff. Food tasty!

Room service: used two times, each time was on hold 15-20 minutes before someone picked up. Thumbs down.

Entertainment: Enjoyed "Music Network" (again)!

Casino: Lost $ playing BJ. Though I did get two straight flushes playing VP for about 2 hours total (and one of those hands was dealt to me). The staff pulled a no-no: I play two hands of BJ at a time (3rd base) and Cheryl sits to my left. One of the pit people whispered to the dealer and he then asked her to leave the chair if she was not playing. I said to him "you are joking, right?" he was not. I colored up about 75 green chips and left for the night. Their loss! ;) We got the official "of course she can sit with you" later on - but the damage had been done.

Ports: we FINALLY made it to HMC -- our 3rd attempt. Beautiful beach. Had a Cabana (shared it with DGP1111). I am REALLY happy it had an AC (creature comfort spoiled here)!

Tom

Thanks for the info!

Sounds like a "could have been worse, could have been better" cruise.

We really enjoyed our cabana at HMC when we were there in July. Glad to hear Roatan also has them (thanks PaulMedik). We will be there for the first time in Dec. so will have to look into that.

Tell Cheryl hello.

So this has nothing to do with my being for or against smoking in general, but if fire on board a ship is the greatest concern--why is smoking allowed? I mean what greater risk for fire is there than lighting an actual little fire and then lighting something else on fire (cigarette/cigar) that could blow back into a room and catch a curtain or carpet on fire? I was just thinking about this the other day and it occured to me that my asthmatic friend will have to go without properly circulated air because of our dangerous fan (exactly the one the op pictured), yet Joe the Smoker can puff away unconcerned.

Makes no sense to me.:confused:

I have thought about this too, and I wonder if it is because those addicted to nicotine (I was for a long time, so I understand) will simply not go a cruise that bans smoking. (And didn't Carnival's experiment with a non-skoking ship fail?) But, while some people will refuse to cruise without their fans or irons or power strips or whatever, most will grumble a bit, then board the ship and make do without whatever it was that they weren't allowed to bring onboard.

In other words, Carnival bans potentially unsafe items as long doing so doesn't materially affect bookings or income. Just a guess, of course . . .

Will do. Have a GREAT time!

I guess we need to keep a printed copy of the FAQ section to "prove" to guest relations that fans in good shape are allowed.

I don't understand why this continues to be a matter for debate.

Still scratching my head on that point as well!

YEP!

Though this cabin was able to get COLD. I also bring a small digital thermometer with us so I can accurately determine the temp. I don't want someone from maintenance coming to check on a problem and say, "no, it is cool enough for our standards". Ours would consistently drop to 65.5 with both AC vents wide open (day or night). Quite impressive!

It has a magnetic back, so I can always find some spot on the wall to place it (not an exterior wall). This marks the second time that I have left it behind... :( I apparently need to go over my packing list when I return as well!

Here is a pic of one I left behind on the Dream in December (another chilly room - though we have had hot ones as well)!

My travel alarm clock/ sound machine also has a temp gauge built in....

(all battery).... very handy!!

Just so you know the dangers Linda... a battery could leak acid, that acid could then eat through the floor, all the way to the hull of the ship, causing it to sink... just so you know! ;)

Glad that you stood up for your rights and got the fan back. I think that if a bunch of folks make a stand for what is allowed then they will become informed and stop harrassing those that bring legal items onboard

Yep.

I was very diplomatic (though just as determined as this fellow):

lol. I never thought about a ship takever with a pair of scissors. I was thinking too small.

The folks at the Carnival xray, said RCL side of the terminal is much more strict ... they would NEVER have allowed those scissors.

Then pointed to a new sign with weapons on it .... right at the top is a pair of those deadly scissors weapon. Im still shaking my head over what they allow and dont allow.

Understood - thought obviously when it was actually "examined", it was determined NOT to be a hazard (not sure how something can be deemed hazardous without even a cursory evaluation).

BTW (contrary to popular belief on here) Host Mach is not the voice of Carnival... then again, oftentimes, neither is Carnival! If any policy is unwritten, it cannot be considered policy. The courts would have good time with that (no, I am not suit-happy, just throwing that out there for all the attorney wannabees).

In the end, the right hand (at Carnival) many times does not know what the left is doing. Thus: business as usual! Having said that, I acknowledge such disconnect is in no way unique to CCL -- and I am not picking on them to the exclusion of all others... but this is the Carnival forum. :D

Tom

Amen. I think the "tag it medically necessary" conversation on this cruise forum was done before Carnival actually came out with the revised prohibited items guidelines. This sounds like just another case of them not knowing or following their own rules. Glad it got worked out, and hopefully they are more informed of their own rules now. :D

What happens if your hands are "registered as lethal weapons"... :D

I am sure Carnival would not leave you empty handed though... "here you go sir, let me give you your - I mean A - hand with that carry on"! ;)

(I know... I know... that is why I won't do two shows a night anymore!)

One would like to think so... but I will be sending a formal letter up the chain, as I would like something from corporate on CCL stationery spelling it out for future use. I would not bring aboard something which I felt was a hazard, and also having an electronics technician certificate in my back pocket (from years ago) means that I may know a bit about electrical devices, current, etc...

Oddly, I totally understand your employees. Although, I will switch bosses with them - I love cruising. Our boss signs us all up for races because that is what HE is interested in. We absolutely hate it and spend too much time dreading it.

I can see if you are boarding a airplane and your carry on and whats on your body is all you can get at ...but with checked luggage available the day you board and all the ports ... I think its ridiculous to confiscate scissors.

They cant decide if they need to screen like a airplane or not. They are so confused.

Yes - some of us are not as cruise crazy as others. Most here on CC would fall into the crazy camp, others couldn't care less!

Beyond OBVIOUS weapons (guns, machetes, Nunchucks, explosives, etc) they really need to "lighten up (Francis)". That comment was not directed to anyone here.. just a movie quote --- gotta think proactive here on CC sometimes! :D

Upon receiving our first 2 (of 3) pieces of luggage about 2:30 after we boarded the Destiny last Monday (9/6) I noted that one of our suitcases (not locked) had been opened. It was obvious as the zippers did not meet in the middle, but rather at one end.

There was a note inside indicating that a "PROHIBITED ITEM" (FAN) had been removed and would be delivered to our cabin on debarkation morning.

I think your first mistake was in leaving your bag unlocked. When the crew is scrambling to clear thousands of pieces of luggage, taking the extra time to have the owner come to the naughty room isn't as likely as them opening an unlocked bag.

Glad you got your fan back.

You have got to be kidding? Over a fan being taken?. This is a prime candidate for the "most ridiculous complaints" thread.

I'm not reading any further but I have to say threatening to get off the ship because of a fan issue is, indeed, one of the most ridiculous things I have read on CC. Granted, the whole "fan" thing is a gray area. Today, I was pissed because I picked up some sale items and after checking with a clerk was told I would get 50% off the mark down price only to get to the register and be told that the price marked WAS 50% off. I wasn't happy but I didn't stomp my feet and threaten to never shop there again.

Get pissed, never sail Carnival again but to post with all seriousness that you got so bent out of shape that you threatened to disembark and are STILL bent out of shape because of a poorly defined and enforced policy regarding fan usage....Please.

at least you said PLEASE! :)

BTW, my frustration with Carnival runs a bit deeper - thus I am closer to the edge to begin with. But short of others reading all of my past posts (or me rehashing EVERYTHING), it may seem unreasonable to otherwise reasonable people!

I have not totally crossed them off of my cruise list because they still offer a good product for the value. It's elements of their customer service which have given me problems in the past... and apparently continue to do so!

Tom.......

Thanks for the info on this............We are planning on taking a fan with us on our upcoming cruise at the end of October. I'm going to print the page from the Carnival website outlining their policy. It's ridiculous that your fan even got touched since it's clear you did nothing wrong by bringing it.

Again, thanks for posting this...........it will come in handy for many, I'm sure.

Happy Cruising!!
