Questions on UK cruises (cost and food) from an American

Hello,

I'm a 26 yo man from NYC and I visited the UK for the first time as an adult in the summer of 2009. I really liked it. One thing in particular I liked was British pub food, especially meat pies of various sorts, chips, peas, and gravy.

I'd like to see more of the UK, possibly on a cruise. I also like cool weather, and don't mind rain too much as long as it's not pouring, so season isn't important to me. I was wondering if anyone could advise me of affordable UK cruising options for a solo cruiser, if itinerary and time of year were unimportant. Also, have any UK cruisers encountered meat pies or chips available on any of the cruises they've taken?

Thanks.

Cruising solo is an expensive business, some ships have a few single cabins, but generally singletons occupy a double cabin at 200% of the fare ie one pays the same price as two. There are a few opportunities to buy at 150%, and for late bookings it can be as low as 125%. But there are no bargains. In another thread you mentioned a friend - financially you'll be way better to compromise on date/cruise in order to share.

Cruises from & around the UK/northern Europe are nearly all in the summer because the winters tend to be cold, often wet & sometimes stormy, and daylight hours are comparatively short (dark by 4pm deep winter, 10pm high summer, even more extreme in Scotland)

But you'll know that a UK summer isn't like a NY summer.

Meat pies & puddin's & other pub grub are available on Brit ships such as P&O, but you'll be ashore most days, so plenty of choice of pub lunches.

Thanks for the replies. It does sound like splitting a cabin is the way to go. I don't think I can convince my friend that would like to cruise to take one out of somewhere other than New York, so I guess I'll try to make some friends across the pond and see if one of them wants to go.

If you want an alternative to 'big' ships and want to see the countryside (rather than just the coast), have a think about a hotel narrowboat. These cruise the canal system which is a great way to see the country. You will be well fed and watered and can help working the locks, but thats about it. No shows, casino or trivia!! Just your fellow travellers (normally about 10). The motor boat is usually the 'day' boat (lounge and meals etc) and the butty (towed boat) is the 'bedroom'. Google 'UK hotel narrowboat' for more info, but to whet your appetite, heres a photo.

Most cruise lines will do this - but will call it Beef Wellington on a bed of Saute potatoes accompanied by petit pois and beef jus

....and however you cruise the canals, whether hotel boat or self catering, there's a pub round every bend (well, nearly!), and most of them will serve pies.... my favourite holiday after cruising....
